Fipronil (FPN) is a relatively new and broad spectrum insecticide that induces toxic effects to animals and humans through induction of oxidative stress. Ginseng is a medicinal plant that has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic activities. Thus, the current study was conducted to evaluate the anti-toxic potential of ginseng aqueous extract (GAE) against FPN-induced hepatorenal toxicity in rats. Thirty-two male Wistar albino rats were randomly allocated into four equal groups. Rats of the control group received distilled water. The second group was administrated with GAE at a dose of 200 mg/kg b.w. #link# orally day by day for 6 weeks. The third group was intoxicated with FPN at a dose of 4.85 mg/kg b.w. orally day by day for 6 weeks. The fourth group was administrated with GAE 2 h before FPN intoxication. Intoxication of rats with FPN significantly elevated the activities of serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase and serum levels of urea and creatinine, as well as increased malondialdehyde level and protein expressions of caspase-3 and cyclooxygenase-2 in hepatic and renal tissues. However, it significantly decreased hepatic and renal GSH content and catalase activity. In addition, it induced histopathological alterations in hepatic and renal tissue architectures. Conversely, concomitant oral administration of GAE ameliorated the FPN-induced biochemical, pathological, and histochemical alterations in both hepatic and renal tissues. This study indicated that ginseng attenuates FPN-induced hepatorenal toxicity, possibly via its antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Graphical Abstract CAL ABSTRACTPHIRAG.Arsenic (As) toxicity is a global phenomenon, and it is continuously threatening human life. Arsenic remains in the Earth's crust in the forms of rocks and minerals, which can be released into water. In addition, anthropogenic activity also contributes to increase of As concentration in water. Arsenic-contaminated water is used as a raw water for drinking water treatment plants in many parts of the world especially Bangladesh and India. Based on extensive literature study, adsorption is the superior method of arsenic removal from water and Fe is the most researched periodic element in different adsorbent. Oxides and hydroxides of Fe-based adsorbents have been reported to have excellent adsorptive capacity to reduce As concentration to below recommended level. In addition, Fe-based adsorbents were found less expensive and not to have any toxicity after treatment. Most of the available commercial adsorbents were also found to be Fe based. Nanoparticles of Fe-, Ti-, Cu-, and Zr-based adsorbents have been found superior As removal capacity. Mixed element-based adsorbents (Fe-Mn, Fe-Ti, Fe-Cu, Fe-Zr, Fe-Cu-Y, Fe-Mg, etc.) removed As efficiently from water. Oxidation of AsO33- to AsO43-and adsorption of oxidized As on the mixed element-based adsorbent occurred by different adsorbents. Metal organic frameworks have also been confirmed as good performance adsorbents for As but had a limited application due to nano-crystallinity. However, using porous materials having extended surface area as carrier for nano-sized adsorbents could alleviate the separation problem of the used adsorbent after treatment and displayed outstanding removal performances.Human disturbance in the landscape lead to dramatic changes in the spatial structure of landscape patterns. link2 This paper takes the Chongqing Three Gorges Reservoir area of China as case study to carry out gradient change analysis of the landscape pattern. Firstly, the coupled inflection point analysis, information loss method, and principal component analysis are used to determine the optimal grain size in a landscape gradient analysis. Secondly, the multidirectional gradient transect method is selected to analyze the law of landscape gradient change and the change of the landscape index. Finally, we analyzed various landscapes at the type level and obtained the distributions of the landscape types. The research highlights the gradient characteristics and landscape structure responses of typical transects of landscape subdivision types. The main results are as follows (1) The optimal grain size of gradient analysis is 50 m. The patch density, patch shape complexity, and land use abundance of transects from the head to the tail of the reservoir increase. (2) At the landscape level, low mountain areas are more strongly blocked, and landscape connectivity reaches a minimum. At the type level, the landscape shape in the urban-rural interface zone is more complex. link3 (3) Various landscape types are regularly ordered and form the gradient of "urban-agricultural-natural."Bacterial communities are sensitive to environmental fluctuations, and a better understanding of the relationships between bacterial community distribution and complex environmental conditions is important for the remediation of lake ecosystems. In this study, bacterial communities from 7 water and 7 sediment samples in 3 different regions (east, the hydrophyte-dominated region; north, the transitional region; west, the highly polluted region) of Lake Taihu were investigated via high-throughput sequencing. The physicochemical characterization showed that there were obvious differences in the trophic statuses of the three lake regions, which were mainly due to the differences in pollutant concentration and hydrophyte coverage. The Shannon and Simpson values indicated that the diversity of bacterial communities in water was the highest in the eastern region, followed by the northern and western regions, while there was no significant difference in the bacterial community characteristics in sediments among lake ative abundance of the dominant bacterial genera in water, while TOC, TP, and TN were positively correlated with TOC, TP and TN. check details provides useful information for understanding the variation in the diversity of bacterial communities in different habitats of Lake Taihu.Traceability offers significant information about the quality and safety of Chinese Angelica, a medicine and food homologous substance. In this study, a systematic four-step strategy, including sample collection, specific metal element fingerprinting, multivariate statistical analysis, and benefit-risk assessment, was developed for the first time to identify Chinese Angelica based on geographical origins. Fifteen metals in fifty-six Chinese Angelica samples originated from three provinces were analyzed. The multivariate statistical analysis model established, involving hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal component analysis (PCA), and self-organizing map clustering analysis was able to identify the origins of samples. Furthermore, benefit-risk assessment models were created by combinational calculation of chemical daily intake (CDI), hazard index (HI), and cancer risk (CR) levels to evaluate the potential risks of Chinese Angelica using as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and food, respectively. Our systematic strategy was well convinced to accurately and effectively differentiate Chinese Angelica based on geographical origins.Lead (Pb) is considered an important environmental contaminant due to its considerable toxicity to living organisms. It can enter and accumulate in plant tissues and become part of the food chain. In the present study, individual and combined effects of Bacillus sp. MN-54 and phosphorus (P) on maize growth and physiology were evaluated in Pb-contaminated soil. A pristine soil was artificially contaminated with two levels of Pb (i.e., 250 and 500 mg kg-1 dry soil) and was transferred to plastic pots. Bacillus sp. MN-54 treated and untreated maize (DK-6714) seeds were planted in pots. Recommended doses of nutrients (N and K) were applied in each pot while P was applied in selective pots. Results showed that Pb stress hampered the maize growth and physiological attributes in a concentration-dependent manner, and significant reductions in seedling emergence, shoot and root lengths, fresh and dry biomasses, leaf area, chlorophyll content, rate of photosynthesis, and stomatal conductance were recorded compared with control. Application of Bacillus sp. MN-54 or P particularly in combination significantly reduced the toxic effects of Pb on maize. At higher Pb level (500 mg kg-1), the combined application effectively reduced Pb uptake up to 42.4% and 50% by shoots, 30.8% and 33.9% by roots, and 18.4% and 26.2% in available Pb content in soil after 45 days and 90 days, respectively compared with that of control. Moreover, the use of Bacillus sp. MN-54 significantly improved the P uptake by maize plants by 44.4% as compared with that of control. Our findings suggest that the combined use of Bacillus sp. MN-54 and P could be effective and helpful in improving plant growth and Pb immobilization in Pb-contaminated soil.Watershed models are cost-effective and powerful tools for evaluating and controlling non-point source pollution (NPSP), while the reliability of watershed models in a management context depends largely on inherent uncertainties in model predictions. The objective of this study is to present the use of multi-model ensemble applied to streamflow, total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) simulation and quantify the uncertainty resulting from model structure. In this study, three watershed models, which have different structures in simulating NPSP, were selected to conduct watershed monthly streamflow, TN load, and TP load ensemble simulation and 90% credible intervals based on Bayesian model averaging (BMA) method. The result using the observed data of the Yixunhe watershed revealed that the coefficient of determination and Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of the BMA model simulate streamflow, TN load, and TP load were better than that of the single model. The higher the efficiency of a single model is, the greater the weight during the BMA ensemble simulation is. The 90% credible interval of BMA has a high coverage of measured values in this study. This indicates that the BMA method can not only provide simulation with better precision through ensemble simulation but also provide quantitative evaluation of the model structure through interval, which could offer rich information of the NPSP simulation and management. In this study, we aimed to assess the association between development of cardiac injury and short-term mortality as well as poor in-hospital outcomes in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. In this prospective, single-center study, we enrolled hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 and highly suspicious patients with compatible chest computed tomography features. Cardiac injury was defined as a rise of serum high sensitivity cardiac Troponin-I level above 99th percentile (men > 26 ng/mL, women > 11 ng/mL). A total of 386 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 were included. Cardiac injury was present among 115 (29.8%) of the study population. The development of cardiac injury was significantly associated with a higher in-hospital mortality rate compared to those with normal troponin levels (40.9% vs 11.1%, p value less then 0.001). It was shown that patients with cardiac injury had a significantly lower survival rate after a median follow-up of 18 days from symptom onset (p log-rank less then 0.
