The use of ultrasound waves as a non-polluting source of energy is of great interest in the field of sustainable and pharmaceutical chemistry as it differs from conventional energy sources in terms of reaction rates, yields, selectivities, and purity of the products. The present review highlights the application of ultrasound as a green tool in the total synthesis of bioactive natural products as well as this article is also aimed to offer an overview of natural sources, structures, and biological activities of the promising natural products for the first time from 2005 to 2020 elegantly.In this paper, the ultrasound-assisted solvent-mediated polymorphic transformation of theophylline was explored in detail. The induction time and reconstruction time were significantly decreased by ultrasound, thereby decreasing the total transformation time and promoting the transformation process. The ultrasound-promoted efficiency of nucleation was different in three alcoholic solvents, which was difficult to explain by traditional kinetic effects. To resolve the above confusion, binding energies calculated by Density Functional Theory were applied to explore the relationship between the ultrasound-promoted efficiency of nucleation and solute-solvent interactions. Then, a possible molecular self-assembly nucleation pathway affected by ultrasound was proposed the ultrasound could change and magnify the crucial effect of the specific sites of solute-solvent interactions in the nucleation process. Finally, the transformation kinetics with different effective ultrasonic energies was quantitatively analyzed by Avrami-Erofeev model, indicating that the dissolution element in the rate-limiting step was gradually eliminated by higher ultrasonic energy. Fortunately, the elusive crystal form V could be easily obtained by the ultrasound-assisted polymorph transformation. This proved to be a robust method to produce high purity form V of theophylline. The outcome of this study demonstrated that the proper ultrasonic irradiation had the potential to produce specific polymorphs selectively.The research on the potential of cavitation exploitation is currently an extremely interesting topic. To reduce the costs and time of the cavitation reactor optimization, nowadays, experimental optimization is supplemented and even replaced using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This is a very inviting opportunity for many developers, yet we find that all too often researchers with non-engineering background treat this "new" tool too simplistic, what leads to many misinterpretations and consequent poor engineering. The present paper serves as an example of how complex the flow features, even in the very simplest geometry, can be, and how much effort needs to be put into details of numerical simulation to set a good starting point for further optimization of cavitation reactors. Finally, it provides guidelines for the researchers, who are not experts in computational fluid dynamics, to obtain reliable and repeatable results of cavitation simulations.To extend the shelf life and retain bioactive proteins in milk, this study utilized microfiltration (MF) combined with ultrasonication to treat skim milk and investigated its efficiency in removing bacteria and retaining bioactive proteins compared with HTST pasteurization and microfiltration alone. Results showed that microfiltration combined with ultrasonication at 1296 J/mL could completely remove the bacteria in skim milk. Ultrasonication further extended the shelf life (4 °C) of microfiltered skim milk, which could reach at least 40 days when MF was combined with ˃1296 J/mL ultrasonication. In addition, ELISA showed that HTST pasteurization significantly decreased the levels of IgG by ~30%, IgA by ~ 50%, IgM by ~60%, and lactoferrin by ~40%, whereas the activity of the enzymes lactoperoxidase and xanthine oxidase were also decreased by ~ 20%. Compared with HTST, MF alone or combined with ultrasonication retained these bioactive proteins to a larger degree. On the other hand, proteomics indicated both damage to casein micelle and fat globule structures in milk when ultrasonication at >1296 J/mL was applied, as shown by increases in caseins and milk fat globular proteins. Simultaneously, this ultrasound intensity also decreased levels of bioactive proteins, such as complement factors. Taken together, this study provided new insights that may help to implement this novel combination of non-thermal technologies for the dairy industry aimed at improving milk quality and functionality.Considering the promising previous results on the remarkable activity exhibited by cobalt(III) and manganese(II) thiosemicarbazone compounds as antibacterial agents, the present study aimed to prepare and then evaluate the antibacterial activity of two different types of Cu(II) complexes based on a 2-acetylpyridine-N(4)-methyl-thiosemicarbazone ligand (Hatc-Me), a monomer complex [CuCl(atc-Me)] and a novel dinuclear complex [Cu(μ-atc-Me)2μ-SO4]. The compounds were characterized by infrared spectra, ultraviolet visible and CHN elemental analysis. In addition, the crystalline structures of the complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In both cases, the Schiff base ligand coordinated in a tridentate mode via the pyridine nitrogen, imine nitrogen and sulfur atoms. The two Cu(II) atoms in the dimer are five coordinate, consisting of three NNS-donor atoms from the thiosemicarbazone ligand connected by a sulfate bridge. The Hirshfeld surface and energy framework of the complexes were additionally analyzed to verify the intermolecular interactions. The biological activity of the Cu(II) salts, the free ligand and its Cu(II) complexes was evaluated against six strains of mycobacteria including Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The complexes showed promising results as antibacterial agents for M. avium and M. tuberculosis, which ranged from 6.12 to 12.73 μM. Furthermore, molecular docking analysis was performed and the binding energy of the docked compound [Cu(μ-atc-Me)2μ-SO4] with M. tuberculosis and M. avium strains were extremely favorable (-11.11 and - 14.03 kcal/mol, respectively). Pinkeye can occur in epidemic proportions, but severity and susceptibility vary within and between herds, indicating that the disease is multifactorial. This study was conducted to identify the on-farm risk factors associated with pinkeye disease in Australian cattle. Data were gathered from cattle farmers using a custom designed online questionnaire. Farmer responses suitable for assessment (n = 999) were analysed with descriptive, univariable and multivariable logistic regression to evaluate the association of 26 explanatory variables with pinkeye within-herd prevalence. Results revealed that farm location, farm grazing area, farmer-reported dust levels, fly levels, rain levels, animal zebu content and cattle age were significantly associated with pinkeye prevalence. More specifically, having a farm located in southern Australia, of smaller grazing area with cattle ≤ 2 years of age, was associated with a higher pinkeye prevalence. Pinkeye prevalence was also greater if respondents ranked their farms as having high fly levels compared to moderate and low fly levels, respectively and on farms ranked low for rainfall compared to moderate and high rainfall, respectively. Those that ranked their farms as having high dust levels had more pinkeye compared to moderate and low dust levels, but moderate dust levels were protective compared to low dust levels. The results confirm that pinkeye disease is multifactorial and is associated with a range of host and environmental factors. These findings should be used to assist in the control of the disease and improve pinkeye outcomes in Australian cattle.The aim of this study was to appraise the available evidence on the effectiveness of probiotic treatment on mature cattle immunity, inflammation, and disease prevention. A systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to analyse studies that were eligible to answer the following research question "in cattle of at least 6-months of age, is the use of probiotics associated with immunomodulatory and inflammatory responses, and clinical disease outcomes?" Our literature search yielded 25 studies that fit the inclusion criteria. From these studies, only 19 were suitable for inclusion in the meta-analysis due to data limitations and differences in study population characteristics. Included studies were assessed for bias using a risk assessment tool adapted from the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias in randomised trials. GRADE guidelines were used to assess the quality of the body of evidence at the outcome level. The meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager and R. The overall quality of evidence at the outcome level was assessed as being very low. On average, the treatment effect on immunoglobulin G (IgG), serum amyloid A (SAA), haptoglobin (Hp) and β-hydroxybutyrate (BoHB) for cows receiving probiotics did not differ from control cows. Exposure to probiotics was not associated with reduced risk of reproductive disorders (pooled RR = 1.02 95 % CI = 0.81-1.27, P = 0.88). There is insufficient evidence to support any significant positive effects of probiotics on cattle immunity and disease prevention. This lack of consistent evidence could be due to dissimilarities in the design of the included studies such as differences in dosage, dose schedule, diet composition and/or physiological state of the host at the time of treatment.During the transition period three weeks before and after calving the dairy cow is at greater risk of developing disease, to the detriment of welfare and production.
