These preliminary findings provide initial support for PROMIS Depression to assess mood disturbance in DBS candidates, and characterize other PROMIS measures in DBS candidates including group differences reflecting disease specific contribution to Quality of Life.
The Canadian province of Alberta released the ABTraceTogether smartphone app in May 2020 to assist in contact tracing during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Public engagement with this public health tool has been low, limiting the effectiveness of the intervention. This study examines physician knowledge of the app and practice patterns in relation to the app.
We conducted a cross-sectional self-administered online English language survey of physicians and medical students in Alberta, Canada. The survey link was sent to all registered members of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and was distributed by other provincial physician organizations and health zone leaders.
The survey received 317 responses. 96% of participants were aware of the app but only 27% had recommended the app to patients. The most common reason provided for not downloading or recommending the app was that participants had security concerns about the app. 23% of participants indicated they did not believe they had a responsibility to recommend the app to others.
Our study provides insights into participants' knowledge and beliefs about the ABTraceTogether app. This information may be valuable to public health officials who wish to engage physicians in future public health campaigns.

Myositis-specific autoantibodies have defined distinct phenotypes of patients with juvenile myositis (JIIM). We assessed the frequency and clinical significance of anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5) autoantibody-associated JIIM in a North American registry.
Retrospective examination of the characteristics of 35 JIIM patients with anti-MDA5 autoantibodies was performed, and differences from other myositis-specific autoantibody groups were evaluated.
Anti-MDA5 autoantibodies were present in 35/453 (7.7%) of JIIM patients and associated with older age at diagnosis, and lower serum creatine kinase and aldolase levels. Patients with anti-MDA5 autoantibodies had more frequent weight loss, adenopathy, arthritis, interstitial lung disease (ILD), and less frequent falling compared with anti-transcriptional intermediary factor 1 (TIF1), anti-nuclear matrix protein 2 (NXP2)and myositis-specific autoantibody/myositis-associated autoantibody-negative patients. They had a different season of diagnsion compared with anti-synthetase JIIM patients.
Anti-MDA5 JIIM is a distinct subset, with frequent arthritis, weight loss, adenopathy and less severe myositis, and is also associated with ILD. Anti-MDA5 is distinguished from anti-synthetase autoantibody-positive JIIM by less frequent ILD, lower creatine kinase levels and differing seasons of diagnosis. Anti-MDA5 has comparable outcomes, but with the ability to discontinue steroids more rapidly and less frequent flares compared with anti-TIF1 autoantibodies, and more frequent remission compared with anti-synthetase JIIM patients.Many international and national regulations on radon in workplaces, including the 2013/59/Euratom Council Directive, are based on the annual average of indoor radon concentration, assuming it is representative of the long-term average. However, a single annual radon concentration measurement does not reflect annual variations (i.e. year-to-year variations) of radon concentration in the same location. These variations, if not negligible, should be considered for an optimized implementation of regulations. Unfortunately, studies on annual variations in workplaces can be difficult and time-consuming and no data have been published on scientific journals on this issue. Therefore, we carried out a study to obtain a first evaluation of short-term annual variations in workplaces of a research institute in Rome (Italy). The radon concentration was measured in 120 rooms (mainly offices and laboratories) located in 23 buildings. In each room, two 1-year long measurements were performed, with an interval between the two measurements of up to 3 years. The results show variability between the two 1-year long measurements higher than the variability observed in a sample of dwellings in the same area. Further studies are required to confirm the results and to extend the study to other types of workplaces.In this article, we report a periodic density functional theory (DFT) investigation on the formation of the native defects and cerium doping in monoclinic BiVO4 (m-BiVO4) and their effect on the electronic structures, using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functionals corrected for on-site Coulombic interactions (PBE+U). From the point defect formation energies and transition levels, the Bivac (Bi vacancy), Vvac (V vacancy), Oint (O interstitial) and CeV (Ce doping on V site) defects in m-BiVO4 are identified as shallow acceptors. For Ce doping in m-BiVO4, the substitution of Bi by Ce is energetically favorable in the single positively charged state (Ce) under Bi/V-poor conditions, while the substitution of V by Ce is in the single negatively charged state (Ce) under O-rich conditions. The calculated electronic structures suggest that Ce degrades the activity by an unoccupied deep level in the gap region, mainly composed of Ce 4f orbitals, which makes this defect as the photogenerated electron-hole recombination center, in good agreement with the experimental results. For Ce, no localized state exists within the calculated band gap. Its formation energy is sensitive to the chemical potentials and Fermi energy, suggesting that the Bi/V-poor and O-rich conditions are desirable to eliminate the deep-level states and improve photocatalysis. Our results provide insights into enhancing the photocatalytic activity of m-BiVO4 for energy and environmental applications through the rational design of defect-controlled synthesis conditions.Absorption is a widely used technique for a range of different applications. It has lower sensitivity than many other techniques such as fluorescence which has 100 to 1000 times higher sensitivity than absorption. Optical cavity approaches have been developed where the light passes back and forth, within the sample, between two high reflectivity mirrors to increase the pathlength and sensitivity. These approaches have not yet, however, been widely used for analytical applications and for point-of-care diagnostics. Here we show a portable cavity enhanced absorption (CEA) spectrometer and a low cost point-of-care (POC) reader with CEA detection with mechanical elements fabricated using 3D printing. The CEA spectrometer can be used in both single pass and multi-pass cavity enhanced mode to provide measurements in the visible region that are very sensitive and over a wide dynamic range. The CEA mode was shown for Rhodamine B dye to increase the pathlength 57.8 fold over single pass measurements and an LOD of 7.1 × 10-11 M. The cost of the CEA POC reader was reduced by use of narrow band LEDs, photodiodes and removal of fibre optic coupling and with a 14 fold increase in the pathlength over conventional single pass microplate readers. The CEA POC reader was demonstrated for immunoassay of C-Reactive Protein (CRP), Procalcitonin (PCT) and Interleukin 6 (IL-6), towards a three biomarker panel to aid the diagnosis of sepsis. The CEA POC reader can be integrated with wireless connectivity for cloud based data sharing. We show here the potential for the wider use of optical cavity approaches where there is a need for sensitive absorption measurements and also for low cost point-of-care diagnostics.Ferrofluids belong to an important class of highly functional soft matter, benefiting from their magnetically controllable physical properties. Therefore, it is of central importance to quantitatively predict the dynamic magnetic response of ferrofluids. Traditional dynamic theories, however, are often restricted to the near-equilibrium regime and/or only apply to nearly ideal ferrofluids that are monodisperse, dilute enough, and weakly interacting. In this paper I develop a self-consistent and nonperturbative dynamical mean field theory for typical ferrofluids which are often polydisperse, concentrated, and strongly interacting, possibly driven far from equilibrium. I obtain a general nonperturbative expression for the dynamic magnetic susceptibility, quantitatively agreeing with the spectra obtained from Brownian Dynamics simulations on both mono- and bidisperse samples. Furthermore, I derive a generic magnetization relaxation equation (MRE) for both mono- and polydisperse ferrofluids by employing the projection operator technique in nonequlibrium statistical mechanics. This MRE is in simple closed form and independent of which model is employed to approximate the equilibrium magnetization curve. Existing models can be recovered as low-order approximations of my generic and nonperturbative MRE. My theory can play a key role in studying the dynamics of ferrofluids and other polar fluids. It may also have substantial and immediate consequences to various ferrofluid applications.Objectives To characterize the demographics, comorbidities, symptoms, in-hospital treatments, and health outcomes among children/adolescents diagnosed or hospitalized with COVID-19. Main outcome measures Baseline demographics and comorbidities, symptoms, 30-day in-hospital treatments and outcomes including hospitalization, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), multi-system inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C), and death. Results A total of 55,270 children/adolescents diagnosed and 3,693 hospitalized with COVID-19 and 1,952,693 diagnosed with influenzza. Dyspnea, anosmia and gastrointestinal symptoms could help differential diagnosis. A wide range of medications were used for the inpatient management of pediatric COVID-19.
As many countries seek to slow the spread of COVID-19 without reimposing national restrictions, it has become important to track the disease at a local level to identify areas in need of targeted intervention.
We performed modelling on longitudinal, self-reported data from users of the COVID Symptom Study app in England between 24 March and 29 September, 2020. Combining a symptom-based predictive model for COVID-19 positivity and RT-PCR tests provided by the Department of Health we were able to estimate disease incidence, prevalence and effective reproduction number. Geographically granular estimates were used to highlight regions with rapidly increasing case numbers, or hotspots.
More than 2.6 million app users in England provided 115 million daily reports of their symptoms, and recorded the results of 170,000 PCR tests. On a national level our estimates of incidence and prevalence showed similar sensitivity to changes as two national community surveys the ONS and REACT studies. On a geographically granular level, our estimates were able to highlight regions before they were subject to local government lockdowns.
