Radiologically occult hepatocellular carcinoma in the cirrhotic liver introducing using bilateral adrenal metastases.
In this short commentary, the author reflects on his experience working with researchers from developing nations and argues that it is the professional responsibility of those researchers privileged by conducting research in a developed, English-speaking nation to pursue collaboration with researchers in more disadvantageous positions. As noted in a recent article from Matthews et al., researchers from developing countries experience tremendous barriers to identifying collaborators and publishing in top research journals. This commentary notes that researchers from developed countries have both humanitarian and symbiotic rationales for seeking international collaborations with researchers from developing countries. These relationships support the growth of research fields and help deconstruct a western hemispheric hegemony present in much of existing research approaches and thought and publishing practices. Objective Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that is incurable and ultimately fatal. Few therapeutic options are available to patients. In this study, we explored differences in microbiome composition associated with ALS. Methods We compared the gut microbiome and inflammatory marker profiles of ALS patients (n = 10) to those of their spouses (n = 10). Gut microbiome profiles were determined by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results The gut microbial communities of the ALS patients were more diverse and were deficient in Prevotella spp. compared with those of their spouses. In contrast, healthy couples (n = 10 couples of the opposite sex) recruited from the same geographic region as the patient population did not exhibit these differences. Stool and plasma inflammatory markers were similar between ALS patients and their spouses. Predictive analysis of microbial enzymes revealed that ALS patients had decreased activity in several metabolic pathways, including carbon metabolism, butyrate metabolism, and systems involving histidine kinase and response regulators. Conclusions ALS patients exhibit differences in their gut microbial communities compared with spouse controls. Our findings suggest that modifying the gut microbiome, such as via amelioration of Prevotella spp. deficiency, and/or altering butyrate metabolism may have translational value for ALS treatment. Objectives This study aimed to examine (1) the feasibility of the study procedures (i.e. recruitment, retention, attendance, and assessment completion rates), and (2) the effects of horticultural therapy (HT) on apathy, cognitive ability, quality of life, and functional capacity. Methods This was a parallel-group, match-paired, randomized controlled trial. Thirty-two participants were allocated to either the experimental or the control group. Data were collected at baseline (T0), immediately postintervention (T1), and 3 months postintervention (T2). The Apathy Evaluation Scale-informant version (AES-I); Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE); Quality of Life in Alzheimer's disease (QoL-AD) scale; Barthel index (BI) were used to measure apathy, cognitive ability, quality of life, and functional capacity, respectively. Results The recruitment, retention, attendance and assessment completion rates were 22.7%, 87.5%, 100% and 100%, respectively. The between-group differences in AES-I (p = 0.007) and MMSE (p = 0.034) scores were statistically significant at T1. In the experimental group, the AES-I (p = 0.001), MMSE (p = 0.010), and QoL-AD (p = 0.017) scores were significantly different over time. In the post hoc pair-wise analysis, the AES-I scores of the experimental group observed at T1 were significantly lower than that at T0 (p = 0.032). In the control group, the MMSE scores (p = 0.001) were significantly different over time. Conclusion HT is feasible for residents with dementia and apathy. The HT program effectively reduced apathy and promoted cognitive function, but its effects on quality of life and functional capacity were not observed. The evolution of machine learning (ML) algorithms provides researchers and engineers with state-of-the-art tools to dynamically model complex relationships. The design and operation of municipal solid waste (MSW) management systems require accurate estimation of generation rates. In this study, we applied rapid, non-linear and non-parametric data driven ML algorithms independently, multi-layer perceptron artificial neural network (MLP-ANN) and support vector regression (SVR) models to predict annual MSW generation rates in Bahrain. Models were trained and tested with MSW generation data for period of 1997-2019. The population, gross domestic product, annual tourist numbers, annual electricity consumption and total annual CO2 emissions were selected as explanatory variables and incorporated into developed models. The zero score normalization (ZSN) and minimum maximum normalization (MMN) methods were utilized to improve the quality of data and subsequently enhances the performance of ML algorithms. Statistical metrics were employed to discriminate performance of MLP-ANN and SVR models. The linear, polynomial, radial basis function (RBF) and sigmoid kernel functions were investigated to find the optimal SVR model. Results showed that RBF-SVR model with R2 value of 0.97% and 4.82% and absolute forecasting error (AFE) for the period of 2008 and 2019 exhibits superior prediction and robustness in comparison to MLP-ANN. JH-RE-06 mw The efficacy of MLP-ANN model was also reasonably successful with R2 value of 0.94. It was shown that MMN pre-processing generated optimal MLP-ANN model while ZSN pre-processing produced optimal RBF-SVR model. This work also highlights the importance of application of ML modelling approaches to plan and implement their roadmap for waste management systems by policymakers.Aims Knowledge about the women reached by public family planning services is scarce. The means for provision of these services that are pivotal for women's health and empowerment varies globally. In Finland, family planning services are offered free of charge, but often separately for different age groups. City of Vantaa offers these services for all female residents without age limit. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of the women using public family planning services. Methods We assessed the sociodemographic and reproductive characteristics of women aged 15-44 using (n = 11,790) and not using (n = 42,931) these services in 2013-2014. We obtained adjusted odds ratios (AORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) for service use by multivariate logistic regression. Results Women under 35 years of age had higher odds of service use compared with those over 35 (AORs ranging from 2.79 [95%CI 2.54-3.07] for 15-19 year-olds to 1.81 [95%CI 1.69-1.95] for 30-34 year-olds). Women speaking a foreign native language used services less when aged under 30 and more when aged 35-44 compared with women speaking the national languages.
