Choosing a Double Pram and Pushchair
A double pram or pushchair can simplify life for families, particularly on busy footpaths or in the shops and stores. Choose a model with generous storage space for stowing nappies, snacks and other essentials.
Some parents who are new to the family opt for a future-proof pushchair that can be used as a single stroller when bub is born and then transformed into a twin-mode when the baby has arrived. Joolz has a variety of options.
Tandem
The announcement that you're expecting a child is among life's most exciting experiences. But, once the initial excitement wears off and the reality sets in, you could be faced with a myriad of decisions regarding how to prepare your family for the arrival of your little one or one. One of the most important things to consider is choosing the best pram or pushchair.
Tandem prams (also called "in-line" double prams) are a classic design that have two seats or pram bassinets arranged side by side. The front seat, which is usually padded, reclines flat and is suitable for newborns. The second seat is more upright and is designed to accommodate toddlers as young as three years old. Some models let you decide if your children will look at each other or outwards. Many tandems can be converted to one pushchair once your oldest child is no longer using the second seat.
In terms of cost the tandem is cheaper than a twin pushchair and is a great option for parents looking to save money without compromising on safety or convenience. However, a drawback of a tandem is that it can feel long and heavy to steer, especially when you're bumping up or down kerbs, and it is usually less stable than a twin pram, especially if the child with the most weight is seated at the front. A tandem can also be tricky to get onto public transport, and it can be difficult to maneuver on narrow pavements.
The iCandy Peach, a popular model with a focus on image, is a great alternative for a single parent who wants an elegant design. However the tandem mode can make it feel long and heavy to push. It comes with a frame that expands in dimensions to accommodate the second seat. It can be used with a variety of combinations of car seats, buggy seats, and carrycots (two at a time or separately). The iCandy Wave tandem is another lightweight option that's user-friendly and compatible with a variety of car seats or carrycots.
Side by side
There are many things to consider when choosing a double pushchair or pram. If you're buying for twins or other siblings that are similar in age there are a variety of configuration choices to think about. Tandem prams (also known as side by side prams) are a popular choice because they can be arranged to fit infants in a bassinet on top while the older toddler or infant is in the seat below.
Some models come with convertible seats, which means you can adapt the configuration to suit your family's needs throughout the baby and toddler years. This allows you to keep your children always in your sights and also gives them the an opportunity to interact with each other while they walk.
Tandem prams can be jogging buggies or all-terrain buggies. They are great for outdoor excursions, like to the park. They're also ideal for narrow aisles and checkouts in supermarkets and shops because they are less bulky.
The Redsbaby JIVE3 pram, for instance, can be utilized in tandem mode from birth, but with the addition of an rumble seat. (PS249) It is then possible to change to a single pram mode once your child grows out of the rumble seat or choose the car capsule adaptors (PS53) to turn it into a travel system for infant to toddler.
Another option is the Side by Side Pram from Babybee. This double side-byside pram comes in a range of colors and is designed in a contemporary design. It is designed to be used right from birth, you can add the LUNA newborn cocoon (PS262) or the LUNA infant seats (PS53 each) to ensure that your little ones are secure and comfortable.
If you're looking for a sleek, stylish pushchair that converts into a double-sided side-by-side and a side-by-side double, the Egg 2 from Chicco is a great option. It's available in a variety of infant and carrycots to accommodate twins or siblings with different ages. It's also easy to fold. It's also fairly light and therefore an ideal choice for families with small cars or limited storage space.
Convertible
Some of the top double prams or pushchairs are set up to meet your changing needs. You can fit two toddlers in the seats or a third rider on the seat board, and still have room for a shopping basket, and the capability to add accessories such as rain covers is also a plus. Convertible double strollers are generally heavier and bulkier than single pushchairs, as they are designed to accommodate two or more children. The Graco Modes Nest2Grow is one example of an affordable convertible that is user-friendly, but our testers felt that it was a little heavy for its price.
Some double strollers that convert into convertibles, such as the Baby Jogger City Select 2 include a carrycot suitable for babies. This allows the double stroller to be compacted and reduced in size when not used. The City Select's clever folding system that is one-handed impressed our testers however it requires some time to master. It is also quite fluid and agile in spite of its size.
The Cybex Mockingbird single-to-double stroller is another option that is reasonably priced. The seat converts from a parent-facing infant car seat to a forward-facing toddler car seat, and the bassinet mode is a fantastic option for infants (although keep in mind that infants under 4 months old should never use strollers to sleep due to the danger of asphyxia from position).
If you want more flexibility look into a convertible with dual modes like the iCandy Peach. It's a slim double stroller that can accommodate two children in a tandem. It can also be used to make a tandem by incorporating a second seat kit. It is responsive and nimble and our test participants loved its sleek design. It's not as lightweight as some of the other models on our list however it does come with a huge basket that's ideal for parents carrying bags full of toys and groceries.
Lightweight
Convertible double strollers are an excellent option for parents who already have one child and are expecting to have another. The iCandy Peach can be converted from a single pushchair to double with the addition of a toddler seat, or the brand's carrycot (which works well for overnight sleeping). Our testers noted how comfortable the seats are and adore the fact that they both recline to multiple positions, come with built-in foot and leg supports and large UPF 50+ canopies with windows that peek out. The rear seat can also be elevated to provide a an elevated platform for the child to get off and on, so they can access items in the shopping basket.
Cher said that the only disadvantage of the iCandy Peach was its weight. However, she believed this was offset because it's easy to move and has plenty of storage, including two cup holders for children and parents seats-back pockets, as well as a large basket underneath the seat. Cher also appreciated the seat's design, which is reversible, so they can be placed to face one another for siblings who wish to talk and get together while out and out and about.
A lighter, but equally impressive choice is the Delta Children LX side-by-side stroller, which weighs only 18 lbs. It is compact and features a self-standing fold that makes it easy to transport and store in your trunk or at home. strollers double strollers love the quality of the materials and craftsmanship as well as the low price point. The only downsides are that the seats do not recline as much as other models we have tested and the rear seat isn't as visible due to its location as it is higher than the seat in front.
Another popular option is the Joolz Geo 3, which is slim and sleek. It is also easy to steer, with an attractive design and lifetime guarantee. It's important to keep in mind that despite their narrower design, side by side prams remain wider than tandem and in-line doubles and can be tricky to navigate on crowded footpaths or in shops. However, they're generally shorter, which means they can be easier to turn in tight spaces than tandems.
