Building from work linking positive youth development (PYD) to civic engagement, this study examined how socialization trajectories from early childhood through adolescence in concert with early childhood experiences and contexts related to adolescent civic development. Person-centered analysis (PCA) through trajectory modeling was conducted using the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 (ECLS-K). Family-level inclusion criteria was used to identify the subsample wherein at least 1 parent identified as Black or African American (N = 3,562); 49.5% of children were female. #link# The ECLS-K component measure of socioeconomic status (SES) indicated that most families were from low SES backgrounds (54.5%), followed by middle and upper-middle class (36.4%,), then upper-middle class and beyond (9.1%). Civic development was measured by the PYD outcomes of competence, confidence, connection to school and peers, caring, and character, which have positively accounted for civic engagement across ethnically and racially diverse youth. Findings suggest that diversity in socialization experiences, sociocultural background, and context result in differential outcomes of civic development. This builds on previous civic engagement work by affirming the importance of parental perceptions, civic opportunity, socialization practices, and context. Moreover, this work highlights ethnic diversity among Black youth in civic development and suggests that being from an immigrant family is associated with differential civic outcomes relative to their nonimmigrant counterparts. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved).This study aimed to illuminate the implications of adolescents' relationships with mothers and fathers for their career development processes and, in turn, their occupational attainment in young adulthood across a 10-12-year period. Grounded in the career construction theory, which highlights adolescence as a significant period of preparation for career attainment and families' role in this process (Savickas, 2013), we tested the mediating effect of adolescent career adaptivity, a fundamental component of career adaptation, in the longitudinal links between mother- and father-adolescent relationship quality and young adult occupational prestige. We also compared mothers' and fathers' roles in these links and tested youth gender moderation. Data came from mothers, fathers, and 236 youth (122 firstborns and 114 secondborns; 53% female) from 147 European American working- to middle-class families. Structural equation modeling tested whether effects of relationships with mothers and fathers at Time 1 (adolescents' Mage = 15.17, SD = .96) were mediated by Time 2 (1 year later) adolescent career adaptivity, represented by academic performance, sense of control, and self-worth, in relation to occupational prestige at about age 26. Results showed that career adaptivity fully mediated the link between mother-adolescent relationship quality and young adult occupational prestige, but the effects of father-adolescent relationship quality were nonsignificant, though model comparison did not reveal a significant difference between mother and father effects. There were no differences by youth gender. Findings contribute to understanding of families' role in youth career development and future attainment and add to the literature on career construction theory. Here, we report on thermomechanical nanoindentation with a scanning probe to create strain nanopatterns in 2D transition metal dichalcogenides and graphene, enabling arbitrary patterns with a modulated bandgap at a spatial resolution down to 20 nm. The 2D material is in contact via van der Waals interactions with a thin polymer layer underneath that deforms due to the heat and indentation force from the heated probe. link3 Specifically, we demonstrate that the local bandgap of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is spatially modulated up to 10% and is tunable up to 180 meV in magnitude at a linear rate of about -70 meV per percent of strain. The technique provides a versatile tool for investigating the localized strain engineering of 2D materials with nanometer-scale resolution.The formyl peptide receptor 2 (ALX/FPR2), a G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), plays an important role in host defense and inflammation. This receptor can be driven as pro- or anti-inflammatory depending on its agonist, such as N-formyl-Met-Leu-Phe-Lys (fMLFK) and resolvin D1 (RvD1) or its aspirin-triggered 17 (R)-epimer, AT-RvD1, respectively. However, the activation mechanism of ALX/FPR2 by pro- and anti-inflammatory agonists remains unclear. In this work, on the basis of molecular dynamics simulations, we evaluated a model of the ALX/FPR2 receptor activation process using two agonists, fMLFK and AT-RvD1, with opposite effects. The simulations by both fMLFK and AT-RvD1 induced the ALX/FPR2 activation through a set of receptor-core residues, in particular, R205, Q258, and W254. In addition, the activation was dependent on the disruption of electrostatic interactions in the cytoplasmic region of the receptor. We also found that in the AT-RvD1 simulations, the position of the H8 helix was similar to that of the same helix in other class-A GPCRs coupled to arrestin. Thus our results shed light on the mechanism of activation of the ALX/FPR2 receptor by pro-inflammatory and pro-resolution agonists.DNA-templated silver clusters are chromophores in which the nucleobases encode the cluster spectra and brightness. We describe the coordination environments of two nearly identical Ag106+ clusters that form with 18-nucleotide strands CCCCA CCCCT CCCX TTTT, with X = guanosine and inosine. For the first time, femtosecond time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectroscopy with visible excitation and mid-infrared probing is used to correlate the response of nucleobase vibrational modes to electronic excitation of the metal cluster. A rich pattern of transient TRIR peaks in the 1400-1720 cm-1 range decays synchronously with the visible emission. Specific infrared signatures associated with the single guanosine/inosine along with a subset of cytidines, but not the thymidines, are observed. These fingerprints suggest that the network of bonds between a silver cluster adduct and its polydentate DNA ligands can be deciphered to rationally tune the coordination and thus spectra of molecular silver chromophores.Atropisomeric anilides have received tremendous attention as a novel class of chiral compounds possessing restricted rotation around an N-aryl chiral axis. However, in sharp contrast to the well-studied synthesis of biaryl atropisomers, the catalytic asymmetric synthesis of chiral anilides remains a daunting challenge, largely due to the higher degree of rotational freedom compared to their biaryl counterparts. Here we describe a highly efficient catalytic asymmetric synthesis of atropisomeric anilides via Pd(II)-catalyzed atroposelective C-H olefination using readily available L-pyroglutamic acid as a chiral ligand. A broad range of atropisomeric anilides were prepared in high yields (up to 99% yield) and excellent stereoinduction (up to >99% ee) under mild conditions. Experimental studies indicated that the atropostability of those anilide atropisomers toward racemization relies on both steric and electronic effects. Experimental and computational studies were conducted to elucidate the reaction mechanism and rate-determining step. DFT calculations revealed that the amino acid ligand distortion is responsible for the enantioselectivity in the C-H bond activation step. The potent applications of the anilide atropisomers as a new type of chiral ligand in Rh(III)-catalyzed asymmetric conjugate addition and Lewis base catalysts in enantioselective allylation of aldehydes have been demonstrated. This strategy could provide a straightforward route to access atropisomeric anilides, one of the most challenging types of axially chiral compounds.
