To know which sperm selection technique, physiological intracytoplasmic sperm injection (PICSI) or magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS), is better for the selection of sperm with abnormal sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) in patients undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

A prospective randomized trial included 413 ICSI cases with abnormal SDF (> 20.3%) by TUNEL assay. Patients with at least 1 million total progressive motile sperm count were randomized to PICSI or MACS groups on the day of ICSI. PICSI depends on the hyaluronan binding of better SDF sperm where individual sperm was selected, while MACS selects non-apoptotic sperm population using Annexin V magnetic beads. All pre-implantation embryogenic parameters were observed and the main outcome was the ongoing pregnancy rate.

There were no significant differences between patients allocated to PICSI and MACS in the studied parameters including pre-implantation embryological data, implantation, clinical pregnancy, and ongoing pregnancy rates. Meanwhile, sub-analysis according to the female age has shown that female patients with less than 30years of age in the MACS group had significantly higher good-quality blastocyst, clinical pregnancy, and ongoing pregnancy rates than the PICSI group. However, the higher implantation (p = 0.051), clinical pregnancy (p = 0.078), and ongoing pregnancy (p = 0.097) rates observed in females between 30 and 35years of age in the PICSI group did not reach significance level.

PICSI and MACS are efficient techniques for sperm selection in cases with abnormal sperm DNA fragmentation. However, MACS is preferred when the females are younger than 30years, while PICSI is preferred in older females.

NCT03398317 (retrospectively registered).Although fibromyalgia (FM) has been traditionally defined by the extent of physical pain sites alongside other non-pain symptoms, recent evidence has highlighted the importance of social dimension in definition of pain perception. Social pain or invalidation, which denotes painful feeling following social conflicts or misunderstanding about illness legitimacy, is an important but ignored issue in the FM lexicon. While physical and social pain seem to be different and separate entities, we hypothesize that they are completely intertwined with indistinct borders in FM. Accumulating emergent neuroscience and behavioral evidence highlights the overlapping of physical and social pain in different painful conditions. However, this overlapping seems to reach its maximum in FM. This review sheds more light on the tight interconnectivity between physical and social pain in FM from the perspective of intuitional commonalities, clinical aspects, and shared neural pathways. The conceptualization of FM as an integrative physical-social pain paradigm will move us closer to necessitating the incorporation of social pain in future models of FM diagnosis and management. Key Points • Considering of social pain as one key concept is relatively mute in FM literature. • Overlapping of physical and social pain seems to be unique in FM due to its nature. • Acknowledging social pain in the FM lexicon could shift the paradigm of diagnosis and management of FM patients.Among statistical tools for the study of atmospheric pollutants, trajectory regression analysis (TRA), cluster analysis (CA), and principal component analysis (PCA) can be highlighted. Therefore, this article presents a systematic review of such techniques based on (i) air mass influences on particulate matter (PM) and (ii) the study of the relationship between PM and meteorological variables. This article aims to review studies that use TRA and to review studies that adopt CA and/or PCA to identify the associations and relationship between meteorological variables and atmospheric pollutants. Papers published between 2006 and 2018 and indexed by five of the main scientific databases were considered (ScienceDirect, Web of Science, PubMed, SciELO, and Scopus databases). PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) recommendations supported this systematic review. From the resulting most relevant papers, eight studies analyzed the influence of air mass trajectories on PM using TRA and twenty-one studies searched for the relationship between meteorological variables and PM using CA and/or PCA. A combination of TRA and time series models was identified as the possibility of future works. Besides, studies that simultaneously combine the three techniques to identify both the influence of air masses on PM and its relationship with meteorological variables are a possibility of future papers, because it can lead to a better comprehension of such a phenomenon.Specificity and sensitivity of positron emission tomography (PET) radiopharmaceuticals targeting fibrillar amyloid-β (Aβ) deposits is high for detection of neuritic Aβ plaques, a mature form of Aβ deposits which often have dense Aβ core (i.e., cored plaques). However, imaging-to-autopsy validation studies of amyloid PET radioligands have identified several false positive cases all of which had mainly diffuse Aβ plaques (i.e., plaques without neuritic pathology or dense amyloid core), and high amyloid PET signal was reported in the striatum where diffuse plaques predominate in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Relative contributions of different plaque types to amyloid PET signal is unclear, particularly in neocortical areas where they are intermixed in AD. In vitro binding assay and autoradiography were performed using [3H]flutemetamol and [3H]Pittsburgh Compound-B (PiB) in frozen brain homogenates from 30 autopsy cases including sporadic AD and non-AD controls with a range of brain Aβ burden and plaque density. Fixed tissue sections of frontal cortex and caudate from 10 of the AD cases were processed for microscopy using fluorescent derivatives of flutemetamol (cyano-flutemetamol) and PiB (cyano-PiB) and compared to Aβ immunohistochemistry and pan-amyloid (X-34) histology.
