To compare patient preferences for eyeglasses prescribed using a low-cost, portable wavefront autorefractor versus standard subjective refraction (SR).

Randomized, cross-over clinical trial.

Patients aged 18 to 40 years presenting with refractive errors (REs) to a tertiary eye hospital in Southern India.

Participants underwent SR followed by autorefraction (AR) using the monocular version of the QuickSee device (PlenOptika Inc). An independent optician, masked to the refraction approach, prepared eyeglasses based on each refraction approach. Participants (masked to refraction source) were randomly assigned to use SR- or AR-based eyeglasses first, followed by the other pair, for 1 week each. At the end of each week, participants had their vision checked and were interviewed about their experience with the eyeglasses.

Patients preferring eyeglasses were chosen using AR and SR.

The 400 participants enrolled between March 26, 2018, and August 2, 2019, had a mean (standard deviation) age of 28.4 (6.6) s is supported by these findings. This study evaluates the efficacy of a cryopreservation protocol for spermatozoa derived from the accessory testis of male Bombus impatiens. It is also the first report of successful cryopreservation of bumble bee spermatozoa. The spermatozoa viability was compared with the similarly treated honey bee spermatozoa derived from its accessory testis. The semen was frozen using a yolk-free non-activating buffer containing dimethyl sulphoxide and stored in liquid nitrogen for 24 h to ~14 days. Thereafter, the frozen samples were thawed rapidly and assessed by staining with live/dead differentiating fluorescent dyes. Semen viability in cryopreserved samples (55.8 ± 14.0%) was significantly different than controls (96.2 ± 10.5%). Similar assessment with A. mellifera resulted in 82.2 ± 7.0% viable cryopreserved spermatozoa versus 99.4 ± 0.1% in controls. A similar proportion of the sperm cells were also capable of motility upon dilution of the extender medium with phosphate buffered saline. The proportion of viable accessory testis derived sperm cells obtained post-cryopreservation was estimated to be sufficient to initiate long term storage and artificial insemination programs.Chitotriosidase (CHIT1, chitinase 1) is increased in the cerebrospinal fluid and peripheral blood of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Our previous study has shown that CHIT1 provides potential protection through microglial polarization and reduction of β-amyloid (Aβ) oligomers on rat models of AD. Histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) plays a significant role in the expression and regulation of proteins related to the pathophysiology of AD. In addition, nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway activation in neurons is associated with the progression of AD. NF-κB activation is regulated by HDAC3 deacetylation. In the present study, we researched the role of CHIT1 in HDAC3/NF-κB signaling in D-galactose (D-gal) and aluminum-exposed rat model with cognitive impairments. Following CHIT1 treatment, we found that the protein and mRNA levels of HDAC3 and NF-κB were reduced, the expression level of IκBα increased, anti-inflammatory factors (Arg-1, IL-10, and CD206) were elevated while pro-inflammatory factors (TNF-a, iNOS, and IL-1β) were decreased in D-gal/aluminum-induced AD rats. These results indicate that CHIT1 can regulate brain inflammation via HDAC3/NF-κB p65 pathway, contributing to improvement of cognitive impairment. This study primarily explored the potential effects of high-frequency (20 Hz) repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) with different intervention protocols on cognition and neuronal excitability in mice. Mice were randomly divided into 4 groups a control group that received sham stimulation, an rTMS in vitro group whose acute brain slices received high-frequency stimulation, an rTMS 1 d group that received high-frequency stimulation for only 1 d, and an rTMS 15 d group that received high-frequency stimulation for 15 d. The novel object recognition and step-down tests were used to assess cognitive ability. The patch-clamp technique was used to record the membrane potentials and neural discharges of dentate gyrus granule cells to evaluate neuronal excitability. Results revealed that cognition and neuronal excitability in the rTMS 15 d group were significantly increased than that in the control and rTMS 1 d groups. The neuronal excitability in the rTMS in vitro group was also significantly increased than that in the control and rTMS 1 d groups. No significant changes were observed between the control and rTMS 1 d groups. These results suggested that high-frequency rTMS applied to the acute brain slices of mice in vitro exerted an immediate effect on increasing neuronal excitability. Chronic high-frequency rTMS applied to the brain of mice in vivo exerted a cumulative effect in improving cognition and increasing neuronal excitability.Although extensive research to date has focused on enhancing removal rates of antibiotics from municipal wastewaters, the transformation products formed by anaerobic treatment processes remain understudied. The present work aims to examine the possible roles that the different microbial communities of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) play in the transformation of antibiotics during wastewater treatment. As part of this work, sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, and ampicillin were added in separate stages to the influent of the AnMBR at incremental concentrations of 10, 50, and 250 μg/L each. Antibiotic-specific transformation products detected during each stage, as identified by high resolution LC-MS, are reported herein. Results suggest that both isoxazole (sulfamethoxazole) and β-lactam (ampicillin) ring opening could be facilitated by the AnMBR's bioprocess. selleck chemical Microbial community analysis results indicated that relative activity of the system's suspended biomass consistently shifted towards syntrophic groups throughout the duration of the experiment. Notable differences were also observed between the suspended biomass and the AnMBR's membrane biofilms. Membrane-attached biofilm communities showed high relative activities of several specific methanogenic (Methanothrix and Methanomethylovorans), syntrophic (Syntrophaceae), and sulfate-reducing (Desulfomonile) groups. Such groups have been previously identified as involved in the formation of the antibiotic degradation products observed in the effluent of the AnMBR. The activity of these communities within the biofilms likely confers certain advantages that aid in the biotransformation of the antibiotics tested. The present study evaluates the vulnerability of the lake system (Deepor Beel) due to the combined exposure of toxic metals, major ions and mineral dissociation. The hydro-chemistry of the Deepor Beel lake reveals the dominance of carbonate weathering with strong evidences of ion-exchange reaction occurring throughout the monsoon season of 2014 and 2015. Through an integrated application of multivariate analysis, the occurrence of albite weathering was confirmed, although as an isolated incidence only, along-with substantial evidence of waste water intrusion from fertilizer industries. The moderate cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the soil, indicates the presence of illite, chlorite and kaolinite which provides a strong buffering action in terms of phosphorous and nutrient retention. However, occurrences of chemical waste in the form of bleaching powder (Ca(OCl)2) are causing acidification of lake soil, which will trigger the release of phosphorous and may enhance the eutrophication level in near future. Through the simulations of Biotic Ligand (BL) model on ceriodaphnia dubia, it is being revealed, that the free availability of Ca2+ in the lake water, provides a higher adsorptive competition for labile metal species especially for Cu and Zn. Additionally, the risk among children from drinking lake water, has increased by three to seven times in a duration of just one year. The present study is a pioneering work, which has evaluated the vulnerability of Deepor Beel lake by adopting a sequential assessment strategy of lake internal as well as external ecology. Our proposed methodology can be a used as a scientific basis for future assessment of the lake health.Iron (Fe) is an essential element for bio-physiological functioning terrestrial organisms, in particular of aquatic organisms. It is therefore crucial to understand the aquatic iron cycle and geochemical characteristics, which is also significant to obtain the key information on earth-surface evolution. The stable iron isotopic composition (δ56Fe) of the dissolved fraction is determined in the Mun River (main tributary of Mekong River), northeast Thailand to distinguish the human and nature influenced riverine iron geochemical behavior. The results show that dissolved Fe concentration ranges from 8.04 to 135.27 μg/L, and the δ56Fe ranges from -1.34‰ to 0.48‰, with an average of 0.23‰, 0.14‰ and -0.15‰ in the upper, middle and lower reaches, respectively. The δ56Fe values of river water are close to that of the bulk continental crust and other tropical rivers. The correlations between δ56Fe and Fe, Al, and physicochemical parameters show mixing processes of different Fe end-members, including the rock weathering end-member (low Fe/Al ratio and high δ56Fe), the urban activities end-member (high Fe/Al ratio and moderate δ56Fe), and a third end-member with probable sources from the Chi River and reservoir. For the most river water samples, the primary contribution is attributed to rock weathering, and the second is urban activities (only a few samples are from the upper and middle reaches). Thus, Fe isotopes could be employed as a proxy to identify and quantify the natural and anthropogenic contributions, respectively. These findings also provide data support for the scientific management of water resources in the Mun River catchment and other large tropical rivers.A marine oil spill is one of the most challenging environmental issues, resulting in severe long-term impacts on ecosystems and human society. Oil dispersants are widely applied as a treating agent in oil spill response operations. The usage of dispersants significantly changes the behaviors of dispersed oil and consequently challenges the oil fingerprinting analysis. In this study, machine learning was first introduced to analyze oil fingerprinting by developing a data-driven binary classification framework. The modeling integrated dimensionality reduction algorithms (e.g., principal component analysis, PCA) to distinguish. Five groups of biomarkers, including terpanes, steranes, triaromatic steranes (TA-steranes), monoaromatic steranes (MA-steranes), and diamantanes, were selected. Different feature spaces were created from the diagnostic index of biomarkers, and six ML algorithms were applied for comparative analysis and optimizing the modeling process, including k-nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector clce. The Chinese government has developed an ambitious project to promote the application of ethanol gasoline (E10) on a national scale since 2017. Given the difference in fuel properties between E10 and traditional gasoline, it is necessary to evaluate the volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from E10-fuelled vehicles. In this study, a two-week sampling campaign was conducted in an urban tunnel, in which E10-fuelled vehicles were dominant, to evaluate the characteristics of VOC emissions from the mixed fleet. In total, 105 VOC species were identified, and the ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) were estimated. The results showed that for vehicular VOC concentrations in the tunnel, alkanes, oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) and alkenes were the most abundant VOC groups, with the average proportion being more than 80% of the total VOCs. The fleet-average VOC emission factor (EF) was 14.8 mg/km/veh, which was much lower than that from traditional gasoline-fuelled vehicle fleets, and alkanes, OVOCs, alkenes and aromatics were the major VOC groups.
