An emerging line of health research is emphasising its negative consequences on women's health and healthcare access. The present study examines how gender inequality contexts affect women's mammography screening uptake. It adopts a macrosociological and institutionalist approach on preventive healthcare use and compares women who live with a partner with those who do not. This is the first study to test the effect of macrolevel gender inequality on mammography uptake across the 26 Swiss cantons (i.e. regions). The Swiss cantons' autonomy to manage their political and healthcare systems, as provided by the federal system, offers an ideal setting for the comparative analysis of macrolevel factors. Data on 9724 women aged 50-70 from the Swiss Health Interview Survey (waves 2007, 2012 and 2017) is analysed. Multilevel logistic models estimate two canton-level indicators of gender inequality, the gender gaps in time use and full-time employment, and their association with mammography uptake, controlling for women's socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, health status and healthcare use. Cross-level interactions assess how these indicators moderate the mammography uptake of women living with and without a partner. Results show that in cantons with higher gender inequality, women have a lower probability of mammography uptake. Women who live with a partner have a higher mammography uptake than those who do not. However, this advantage is moderated by canton-level gender inequality, namely, women who live with a partner in more gender unequal cantons have a lower mammography uptake than their counterparts who reside in more gender equal cantons. Results support the hypothesis that macrolevel gender inequality moderates women's preventive healthcare uptake, from an institutionalist approach.Early 20th century eugenicists propagated a system of ideas, values and dispositions that constituted adults with intellectual disability as the antithesis of the paradigmatic citizen, and a biological threat to society. The eugenic schema was encoded in sex-segregated institutionalization and, in many places, forced sterilization. These eugenic practices are no longer sanctioned. However, eugenic practices did not disappear. In this paper we argue that the eugenic schema is now encoded and purveyed through a multiplicity of social arrangements and practices that deny adults with intellectual disability the respect, opportunity and means necessary to participate on a par with others in social life. Such practices include, for example, covert or coerced contraception, and discriminatory child welfare interventions leading to high rates of custody deprivation. Drawing on relational theory, we problematize normative assumptions of embodiment and citizenship, which give rise to attributions of incapacity, and argue that adults with intellectual disability need what all other adults need to make and effect choices concerning their sexuality, relationships and parenthood, i.e., recognition, opportunity and support.Classical Bartha-K61 strains could not provide complete protection against the emerging highly virulent pseudorabies virus (PRV) variant strains, which has caused great economic losses to swine industry in China. In this study, a gE/gI/TK-deleted PRV vaccine strain based on a circulating PRV variant strain HeB12 was generated by serial passages in Vero cells and a lyophilized formulation was prepared as a live-attenuated PRV vaccine. In order to investigate the epidemiologic aspects of colibacillosis in broiler flocks it is important to develop reliable and cost-effective sampling guidelines. In this context, it is particularly important to define the minimum number of samples required to reliably identify the causative APEC clone during outbreaks of colibacillosis. This study describes the diversity of E. coli isolates between and within three flocks with high FWM due to colibacillosis. Each flock was represented by five animals, showing typical lesions of colibacillosis, and spleen, liver and one other organ from each animal was sampled for APEC. A total of 47 E. coli isolates, one per organ, and approximately 15 isolates per flock were whole genome sequenced and compared by multilocus sequence typing (MLST), serotyping and phylogenetic analysis to deduce their relationship. The results revealed that within individual birds there was little or no sequence type (ST) or serotype diversity between APEC isolates from different organs. Based on phylogenetic analysis, isolates belonging to the same ST and serotype showed a low number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across more than 95 % of the genome. Isolates from the liver always represented the major disease-causing APEC in individual birds, even when more than one ST was detected within an individual bird and flock. This study guides us towards an economically efficient way of sampling for future epidemiological studies on colibacillosis, by determining the causative APEC-clone at flock level.
Little evidence is available on the effect of regional cerebral desaturation (rCD) episodes that occur in the first days after aneurysm subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) on the autonomic nervous system activity and on cardiovascular hemodynamics. In this study, we aimed to determine the impact of rCD episodes, developed within 5days of aSAH, on the autonomic nervous system based on the assessment of baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and on cardiac output (CO) and cardiac index (CI), and on cerebral autoregulation (CA).

Of 96 patients with aSAH, 36 patients (aged 57 (48-69)) met the inclusion criteria and were included in the study. Regional cerebral oxygen saturation and rCD episodes were evaluated using near-infrared spectroscopy. CA was quantified by the correlation coefficient (TOxa). Cardiac output (CO) and cardiac index (CI) were monitored using the FloTrack®/EV1000. Baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) was assessed using the cross-correlation method. Scores of 1 to 3 in Glasgow Outcome Scale were classified as a poor outcome.

During episodes of rCD, BRS decreased significantly compared to baseline (p=0.027) in patients who had a total duration of rCD episodes of more than 10hours. During rCD episodes, CA improved slightly in comparison to baseline (p=0.027). The threshold associated with poor outcome was rSO
<62% (p=0.002).

Here we delve into an in-depth characterization of the preeminent models to study mechanobiology events of (de)myelination and remyelination. Alternatives to in vivo systems are provided, either through the exploration of simpler animal models, creation of in vitro models using tissue engineered approaches or through in silico tools. We discuss how bioengineering is being explored to generate relevant models to dissect new mechanobiology mechanisms and identify novel therapeutic targets, being expected to profoundly impact the treatment of demyelinating diseases.Skin wound is always accompanied with nerve destruction. Due to the limited clinical treatment option, loss of skin sensation with unsatisfactory nerve regeneration is remained to be a challenge for wound therapy. Endogenous mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) based in situ regeneration, of which, MSCs recruited by chemokines and directed for neuronal differentiation by biological and electrical signals have been thought a novel strategy with potential to accelerate the nerve regeneration and sensory functions recovery. However, most current therapeutic systems usually deliver the chemokines, biological and electrical signals separately and statically, resulting in limited nerve regeneration and sensory functions recovery. Moreover, most of the devices for providing electrical signals need external energy input and complicated practice, leading to poor compliance in patients. To address these issues, we propose a self-powered smart patch (PRG-G-C) to provide chemokine and biological-electrical cues in program. PRG-G-C was composed of a flexible piezoelectric generator to supply electrical stimulation and a conductive gel, which served as the reservoir of chemokine and neural directing exosomes as well as the electrode to transfer electric cue. PRG-G-C was shown to efficiently accelerate rapid nerve regeneration and sensation restoration at the wound site within 23 days. This study demonstrates a proof-to-concept in organizing chemokine, neural directing biological-electrical heterogeneous cues within a self-powered smart patch for accelarating nerve regeneration and sensation restoration, possessing great potential in neural repair applications.In the last decade, interest in monitoring and managing plastic pollution has greatly increased. This study compared levels of microplastic contamination in stomachs of Mugilidae fish, suggesting this family as a target for plastic pollution monitoring in areas with different degrees of anthropisation. Two sites characterised by low and high anthropic impact, a fishpond (S'Ena Arrubia, Italy) and a port (Genoa, Italy), respectively, were compared. This study highlighted a stronger microplastic contamination in the port, with a higher percentage of fish showing the presence of microplastics and a larger polymeric variability compared to the fishpond. The microplastic number in fish from the port was higher than in the literature, but it was not significantly different from S'Ena Arrubia in terms of the microplastic percentage found in single individuals. Biomonitoring of microplastic contamination in Mugilidae fish resulted in a valid tool for the investigation of areas differently affected by human activity.
