A 61-year-old Caucasian male with a medical history of metastatic carcinoid presented to dermatology with a new onset severely pruritic “breakouts” on the arms, neck, and chest. Approximately ten years prior, he was diagnosed with a small bowel carcinoid tumor and liver metastases treated with a combination of resection and ablation.
Atopic dermatitis patients are turning to social media to seek guidance and source medical information. Reddit, the seventh most visited website in the US, contains the popular “eczeMABs” subreddit, a forum dedicated to discussing monoclonal antibody therapy for atopic dermatitis.
To uncover atopic dermatitis patients’ dupilumab-related information needs.
The authors analyzed all questions posted on the “eczeMABs” subreddit. Each question was then separated into categories and subcategories for analysis.
262 questions from 189 posts were analyzed. The greatest proportion of questions was related to side effects (36.3%), with patients most frequently inquiring about flares (25/95), ocular effects (17/95), and dry skin (10/95). Usage instructions (13.4%) and general experience (8.0%) were common question categories as well.
The questions of the “eczeMABs” subreddit subscribers may not reflect the questions of all atopic dermatitis patients.

In this study, we investigated acne-related information available on Instagram, one of the most popular social media platforms. We searched for the “top” Instagram posts using the hashtag #acne and characterized them based on their source and content. Posts were excluded if they were unrelated, not in English, or duplicates. 900 posts were assessed, and 439 were included. A majority of the content (258 posts) was generated by influencers, followed by retailers (97) and non-dermatologist providers (67). Dermatologists were responsible for 17 posts, accounting for <4% of the included content. 124 separate ingredients were mentioned as potential acne treatments. The ingredients with the most mention were beta-hydroxy acids (eg, salicylic acid), alpha-hydroxy acids (eg, glycolic acid), vitamin C, niacinamide, and sunscreen. 254 posts recommended at least one specific intervention, and among these posts only 11% referenced a treatment with grade A evidence based on American Academy of Dermatology guidelines. A vast amount of content is readily available to patients on this platform. buy PI4KIIIbeta-IN-10 This content is heterogeneous in message and quality, and dermatologists are responsible for only a small portion of it. Intrinsic properties of vehicles used to deliver topical therapies can profoundly impact drug penetration, efficacy, patient acceptance, and treatment adherence. Therefore, advancements in vehicle technology demand sophisticated, quantitative approaches to describe and differentiate topical formulations. The objective of these studies was to quantitatively evaluate spreadability of two topical formulations for the treatment of acne via in vitro rheological measurement (how a substance’s flow characteristics change under applied stress or force) and spreadability on living skin.
Rheological characteristics (shear-thinning, rigidity, yield stress, and yield strain) of tazarotene 0.045% lotion and trifarotene 0.045% cream were measured using 5 samples of each product. In a clinical split-body study, each formulation was applied to one side of the back of healthy volunteers, and the extent to which each formulation could be spread was measured.

To examine the effectiveness and safety of adjunctive treatment with calcipotriene 0.005%/betamethasone dipropionate 0.064% (Cal/BD) foam in adult patients with chronic plaque psoriasis who have localized residual plaques after ≥24 weeks of treatment with ixekizumab biologic therapy.
This study was a prospective, open-label, single-arm study of adult patients with moderate-to-severe chronic plaque psoriasis who had suboptimal response after ≥24 weeks of treatment with ixekizumab (residual 3–8% body surface area [BSA] involvement). All patients continued treatment with ixekizumab and received once-daily Cal/BD foam for 4 weeks, followed by every other day for weeks 8 to 12. The primary endpoint was treat-to-target BSA ≤1% at week 4. Additional endpoints included the Physician’s Global Assessment (PGA) score, PGA×BSA, and the patient-reported Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Safety evaluations included assessments of adverse events (AEs) and local ski with Cal/BD foam was associated with notable and sustained improvements in disease control. J Drugs Dermatol. 2022;21(3) 235-240. doi10.36849/JDD.6396.Perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens or dissecting cellulitis (DC) is a rare and chronic disease with a predilection for the occipital, vertex, and parietal scalp. DC is characterized by multinodular lesions with purulent drainage and sinus tract formation. It is classically seen in middle-aged males of African descent. The etiology of the disease is unknown; however, leading theories suggest that stasis associated with follicular occlusion begets bacterial infection and follicular destruction with a subsequent granulomatous and neutrophilic response.1 This is supported by the suppurative nature of the disease and its association with acne conglobota, pilonidal cysts, and hidradenitis suppurativa. These conditions are thought to have a shared etiology and are also widely accepted as being due to follicular occlusion.1 The approach to treatment of DC is varied as there is no current consensus on management. We present the case of risankizumab, an IL-23 inhibitor, used to successfully treat DC. J Drugs Dermatol. 2022;21(3) doi10.36849/JDD.6699.Lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP) is a rare variant of lichen planus presenting most commonly in middle-aged patients of color and characterized by the insidious onset of violaceous, brown, or grayish patches on photo distributed areas. Currently, there is limited data regarding the efficacy of treatments for LPP. We, therefore, sought to provide an analysis of current treatment protocols for this condition.Oral tranexamic acid (TXA) is a relatively new treatment option for melasma. It is thought to reduce hyperpigmentation through inhibition of the plasminogen/plasmin pathway with resulting decreases in epidermal melanocyte tyrosinase activity, inflammatory mediators, dermal neovascularization, and mast cell numbers.Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous concentration of plasma from a patient’s blood containing platelets up to 7 times higher than normal plasma. Originally indicated to improve connective tissue regeneration in orthopedic surgery, PRP has also proven to be advantageous in the treatment of androgenic alopecia (AGA), alopecia areata (AA), and other forms of non-scarring alopecia.Geriatric dermatology is an emerging field of dermatology, focused on the unique needs of older adults with dermatological diagnoses. Previous research identified important principles to consider in older adults with skin disease, including cognition, polypharmacy, mobility, social support and sleep disturbance.Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by the formation of recurrent abscesses in apocrine-bearing areas. In advanced stages, chronic inflammation leads to sinus tract formation and cicatrization. In the absence of effective pharmacological treatment to halt or reverse the course of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRDs), population-level research on the modifiable determinants of dementia risk and outcomes for those living with ADRD is critical. The Harmonized Cognitive Assessment Protocol (HCAP), fielded in 2016 as part of the U.S. Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and multiple international counterparts, has the potential to play an important role in such efforts. The stated goals of the HCAP are to improve our ability to understand the determinants, prevalence, costs, and consequences of cognitive impairment and dementia in the U.S. and to support cross-national comparisons. The first wave of the HCAP demonstrated the feasibility and value of the more detailed cognitive assessments in the HCAP compared to the brief cognitive assessments in the core HRS interviews. To achieve its full potential, we provide eight recommendations for improving future iterations of the HCAP. Our highest priority recommendation is to increase the representation of historically marginalized racial/ethnic groups disproportionately affected by ADRDs. Additional recommendations relate to the timing of the HCAP assessments; clinical and biomarker validation data, including to improve cross-national comparisons; dropping lower performing items; enhanced documentation; and the addition of measures related to caregiver impact. We believe that the capacity of the HCAP to achieve its stated goals will be greatly enhanced by considering these changes and additions.
The newborn screening (NBS) program in the Republic of Serbia has several decades of tradition, but it has not included any organic acidemias (OA). Therefore, this study aimed to establish the cut-offs of the corresponding NBS markers in the population of healthy newborns.
In dried blood samples (DBS) collected from 1,771 healthy newborns, we analyzed levels of propionylcarnitine (C3), isovalerylcarnitine (C5), and glutarylcarnitine (C5DC) using tandem mass spectrometry. Further we calculated the following ratios C3/acetylcarnitine (C3/C2), C3/palmitoylcarnitine (C3/C16), C5/ free carnitine (C0), C5/C2, C5/C3, C5DC/octanoylcarnitine (C8), and C5DC/C0.
The cut-offs for methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) or propionic acidemia (PA) were C3>5.73μmol/L, C3/C2>0.23, and C3/C16>2.36. Based on the study findings, the screening results indicative for isovaleric acidemia (IVA) would include C5>0.372μmol/L, C5/C0>0.020, C5/C2>0.019, and C5/C3>0.31. Finally, C5DC>0.303μmol/L, C5DC/C8>7.1, and C5DC/C0>0.019 would justify further testing for glutaric acidemia type I (GA1). The cut-offs were satisfactorily validated via the comparison with worldwide estimates and data for several Caucasian populations.
The levels of the OA biomarkers in the Serbian population of healthy newborns have a distribution pattern similar to the other world populations. Therefore, the proposed cut-offs represent a reliable starting point for the future development of the OA NBS.
