Urinary tract infection (UTI) is common in pediatrics. Infection of the upper urinary tract may cause renal scarring, and subsequently renal failure and hypertension. Permanent renal damage has been suggested to be caused by the host inflammatory response. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the host defense mechanisms against such infection in order to make timely diagnosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate interleukin-6 (IL-6) and IL-8 as potential biomarkers in differentiating acute pyelonephritis (AP) from cystitis (Cys) in children.

Forty-three children (21 with AP and 22 with Cys) were included. Serum and urinary IL-6 and IL-8 were measured during the acute phase (within 12 hours of presentation) and the convalescent phase (8 weeks post-infection). Thirty-eight healthy children were included as controls.

During the acute phase, the mean urinary IL-6 level in the Cys group was significantly higher than that in the controls (17.8 pg/mL vs 14.8 pg/mL, P=0.03), while the serum levels were signr roles as indicators of the site of UTIs.
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a common malignant tumor of the digestive system. Studies have shown that pseudolaric acid B (PAB) has several pharmacological effects like anti-microtubule, anti-angiogenesis, and antitumor functions, while the effect and mechanism of PAB on esophageal cancer are still unclear. This study was designed to investigate the effects of PAB on ESCC.

To study the effects of PAB on the biological function through a series of in vitro and in vivo experiments.

The results revealed that PAB inhibited the proliferation, invasion, and migration, but promoted the apoptosis of ESCC. Moreover, PAB restrained the growth of cancer cells in vivo and inhibited the angiogenesis of HUVEC in mice with ESCC. CD147 expression was increased in the esophageal squamous cell lines, and interference with CD147 hindered the proliferation, invasion, and migration of ESCC cells, and inhibited the growth and angiogenesis of the esophageal squamous cell line. PAB reduced the expression of CD147 in vivo and in vitro. The expression of MMP2, 3, and 9 was increased after overexpression of CD147, which provided the opportunity to reverse the role of PAB in inhibiting proliferation, invasion, migration, and angiogenesis of ESCC.

The results revealed that PAB inhibited the proliferation, invasion, migration, and angiogenesis of ESCC in vitro and in vivo by CD147. PAB is a promising monomer for therapy of ESCC, providing references for future research on ESCC treatment.

Few studies have investigated the relationship of dental caries with obesity among Saudi Arabian population. Hence, this study was conducted to assess the association of obesity with dental caries among school children.

A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted among 12- and 15-year-old government school children of Riyadh. A total of 2247 children were examined from 24 schools of Riyadh. Caries status (decayed, missing, and filled teeth [DMFT]) was recorded according to World Health Organization (WHO) Oral Health Survey 2013. Height and weight measurements were recorded after clinical examination. According to body mass index (BMI) percentiles, the children were classified as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. Chi-square test was used to find association between variables for categorical data. Mean ± standard deviation (SD) was calculated for continuous measurements and to find the difference between the groups unpaired
test/analysis of variance was used. A value of
< 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Dental caries prevalence was 83.7% and mean DMFT was 5.31 ± 3.88 in the study population. A statistically significant difference was found for mean decayed, mean filled teeth, and overall mean DMFT between 12 and 15 years old (
< 0.001), but not for mean missing teeth (
= 0.137). There was no association between BMI categories and mean DMFT for both the age groups.

The dental caries was found to be high among the study subjects compared to WHO norms. Older children had higher DMFT values than the younger children and there was no association between dental caries and BMI.

Infection was identified through visualization of intra-renal Dioctophyme renale on abdominal ultrasound. Both dogs underwent right-sided laparoscopic ureteronephrectomy for treatment of the giant kidney worm infection. Additional adult worms were extirpated from the peritoneal cavity of both dogs. Both dogs recovered without complication from anesthesia and surgery and were discharged within 24 hours after surgery. Laparoscopic ureteronephrectomy has not previously been described for the treatment of giant kidney worm infection in North America. We address the identity of putative ovarian follicles in Early Cretaceous bird fossils from the Jehol Biota (China), whose identification has previously been challenged. For the first time, we present a link to the botanical fossil record, showing that the "follicles" of some enantiornithine fossils resemble plant propagules from the Jehol Biota, which belong to Carpolithes multiseminalis. The botanical affinities of this "form-taxon" are currently unresolved, but we note that C. multiseminalis propagules resemble propagules associated with cone-like organs described as Strobilites taxusoides, which in turn are possibly associated with sterile foliage allocated to Liaoningcladus. Laser-Stimulated Fluorescence imaging furthermore reveals different intensities of fluorescence of "follicles" associated with a skeleton of the confuciusornithid Eoconfuciusornis zhengi, with a non-fluorescent circular micro-pattern indicating carbonaceous (or originally carbonaceous) matter. This is inconsistent with the interpretation of these structures as ovarian follicles. We therefore reaffirm that the "follicles" represent ingested food items, and even though the exact nature of the Eoconfuciusornis stomach contents remains elusive, at least some enantiornithines ingested plant propagules.Anexelekto (AXL), a member of the TYRO3-AXL-MER (TAM) family of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK), is overexpressed in varieties of tumor tissues and promotes tumor development by regulating cell proliferation, migration and invasion. In this study, we investigated the role of AXL in regulating glycolysis in human ovarian cancer (OvCa) cells. We showed that the expression of AXL mRNA and protein was significantly higher in OvCa tissue than that in normal ovarian epithelial tissue. In human OvCa cell lines suppression of AXL significantly inhibited cell proliferation, and increased the sensitivity of OvCa cells to cisplatin, which also proved by nude mice tumor formation experiment. KEGG analysis showed that AXL was significantly enriched in the glycolysis pathways of cancer. Changes in AXL expression in OvCa cells affect tumor glycolysis. We demonstrated that the promotion effect of AXL on glycolysis was mediated by phosphorylating the M2 isoform of pyruvate kinase (PKM2) at Y105. AXL expression was significantly higher in cisplatin-resistant OvCa cells A2780/DDP compared with the parental A2780 cells. Inhibition of AXL decreased the level of glycolysis in A2780/DDP cells, and increased the cytotoxicity of cisplatin against A2780/DDP cells, suggesting that AXL-mediated glycolysis was associated with cisplatin resistance in OvCa. In conclusion, this study demonstrates for the first time that AXL is involved in the regulation of the Warburg effect. Our results not only highlight the clinical value of targeting AXL, but also provide theoretical basis for the combination of AXL inhibitor and cisplatin in the treatment of OvCa.This case report describes a negative result for antigen testing for the SARS-CoV-2 virus in an aqueous sample taken during the management of suspected herpes simplex keratitis from a patient with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 based on antigen testing of high nasal swab. The implications of no viral load detectable in the aqueous sample are discussed in context of routine phacoemulsification surgery during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
Appropriate indications and protocols for induction therapy using basiliximab have not been fully established in heart transplant (HTx) recipients. This study elucidated the influence of induction therapy using basiliximab along with delayed tacrolimus (Tac) initiation on the outcomes of high-risk HTx recipients. Methods and ResultsA total of 86 HTx recipients treated with Tac-based immunosuppression were retrospectively reviewed. Induction therapy was administered to 46 recipients (53.5%) with impaired renal function, pre-transplant sensitization, and recipient- and donor-related risk factors (Induction group). Tac administration was delayed in the Induction group. Induction group subjects showed a lower cumulative incidence of acute cellular rejection grade ≥1R after propensity score adjustment, but this was not significantly different (hazard ratio [HR] 0.63, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.37-1.08, P=0.093). Renal dysfunction in the Induction group significantly improved 6 months post-transplantation (P=0.029). The cumulative incidence of bacterial or fungal infections was significantly higher in the Induction group (HR 10.6, 95% CI 1.28-88.2, P=0.029).

These results suggest that basiliximab-based induction therapy with delayed Tac initiation may suppress mild acute cellular rejection and improve renal function in recipients with renal dysfunction, resulting in its non-inferior outcome, even in high-risk patients, when applied to the appropriate recipients. However, it should be carefully considered in recipients at a high risk of bacterial and fungal infections.
