Infection is an under-recognised but important complication in people with diabetes. Studies on temporal trends in incidence of infection in this population are limited. We report the trends in infection-related hospitalisation in people with diabetes and compared hospitalisation rates between people with and without diabetes in Hong Kong.

Hospital admissions with infection, including pneumonia, influenza, tuberculosis, kidney infection, urinary tract infection, cellulitis, osteomyelitis, foot infection and sepsis, listed as principal diagnosis occurring between 2001 and 2016 were identified from people with diabetes in the electronic medical record system of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. Data on hospitalisation for a subset of these infections in the general population between 2007 and 2016 were obtained from the Department of Health. The number of people with diabetes ranged between 117,322 in 2001 and 570,929 in 2016, and the number without diabetes ranged between 5,242,614 in 2007 and 5,593,153 incal abstract.
Despite advances in medical care, hospitalisation due to infections remains a major healthcare burden in people with diabetes. buy Camostat Graphical abstract.
Bone age assessment is not only an important means of assessing maturity of adolescents, but also plays an indispensable role in the fields of orthodontics, kinematics, pediatrics, forensic science, etc. Most studies, however, do not take into account the impact of background noise on the results of the assessment. In order to obtain accurate bone age, this paper presents an automatic assessment method, for bone age based on deep convolutional neural networks.

Our method was divided into two phases. In the image segmentation stage, the segmentation network U-Net was used to acquire the mask image which was then compared with the original image to obtain the hand bone portion after removing the background interference. For the classification phase, in order to further improve the evaluation performance, an attention mechanism was added on the basis of Visual Geometry Group Network (VGGNet). Attention mechanisms can help the model invest more resources in important areas of the hand bone.

The assessment model was tested on the RSNA2017 Pediatric Bone Age dataset. The results show that our adjusted model outperforms the VGGNet. The mean absolute error can reach 9.997 months, which outperforms other common methods for bone age assessment.

We explored the establishment of an automated bone age assessment method based on deep learning. This method can efficiently eliminate the influence of background interference on bone age evaluation, improve the accuracy of bone age evaluation, provide important reference value for bone age determination, and can aid in the prevention of adolescent growth and development diseases.

The aim of this study was to explore the effects of waterborne Cd exposure on the intestinal microbiota, and Cd accumulation and oxidative response in Carassius auratus gibelio (C. gibelio). The fish were exposed to waterborne Cd at 0, 1, 2, and 4 mg/L for 30 days. Waterborne Cd exposure resulted marked alterations in the composition of microbiota. At the genus level, Bacteroides, Aeromonas, Akkermansia, Acinetobacter, Chryseobacterium, Shinella, Cetobacterium and Bacillus were significantly changed in Cd groups. The results obtained indicate that Cd exposure significantly increased the bioaccumulation level of Cd and profoundly affected antioxidant enzyme including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), total antioxidant (T-AOC), malonaldehyde (MDA), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST). The present findings may provide a new framework for the role of gut microbiota in the response to environmental chemical contamination and in the pathogenesis of body disorders.
Intracranial meningiomas rarely present with multiple lesions. To the best of our knowledge, current literature regarding meningiomatosis (MM) is mostly comprised of small case series and individual reports. Hence, survival outcome data are limited. The Objective of this study is to explore the influence of sex, age, and number of lesions on overall survival (OS) in patients with MM.

We obtained demographic and clinical data from the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results program (SEER) on adult patients diagnosed with meningiomas from 1975 to 2017. Univariable and multivariable analyses were conducted to assess whether number of lesions, age, and sex had a significant influence on OS.

99,918 cases were included. Results showed that MM patients had a significantly decreased OS when compared to patients with a single lesion (median OS of 94 and 180months, respectively; p < 0.001). Further analysis showed a progressive decrease on OS for every additional lesion; 2 (HR 1.659 [CI 95% 1.612-1.708], p < 0.001), 3 (HR 1.877 [CI 95% 1.773-1.988], p < 0.001), and ≥ 4 (HR 2.116 [CI 95% 1.886-2.373], p < 0.001). When assessing for sex differences, female patients had increased OS (HR 0.778 [CI 95% 0.743-0.815], p < 0.001) and decreased risk of developing MM (HR 0.809 [CI 95% 0.784-0.835], p < 0.001).

Increasing number of meningiomas has a significant negative impact on OS, with a progressive decrease on survival for every additional lesion. Furthermore, female patients had increased OS and decreased risk to develop MM.
