More specifically, this study establishes a single-threshold level of capital investment on carbon emissions for the group of countries. The threshold estimator of 3.434 is established at the 95% confidence interval. Beyond this point, the environmental impacts of capital investments are imaginable. On the policy front, keeping to the limit set by threshold effects would go a long way to stemming environmental pollution and mitigating climatic change impacts.The excessive input of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from anthropogenic activities is the main reason behind the cultural eutrophication and algal blooms in freshwater ecosystems. Here, I present a comprehensive budget of N, P for a large reservoir (Lake Diefenbaker) within a highly cultivated watershed. I constructed a 4-year nutrient budget from 2011 to 2014, using grab samples and daily flow data, and a multi-decadal (1978 through 2014) budgeting to examine the effect of inter-annual variability of water residence time on retention of N and P, and if retention of N and P is affected differently. The 4-year budget showed that the reservoir was a net source of total nitrogen (TN) during 2011 and 2014, but a net sink during 2012 and 2013. This resulted in retention coefficients of - 35% and - 4% in 2011 and 2014, respectively. With respect to the total phosphorus (TP) budget, the reservoir acted as a net sink in all 4 years, with a mean retention coefficient of 87%. Consistent with findings of the 4-year buagement can influence the nutrient retention efficiency.
To investigate in vivo the adaptations of satellite cell induced by exercise performed in acute or chronic hypoxic conditions and their contribution to muscle remodeling and hypertrophy.
Search terms related to exercise, hypoxia and satellite cells were entered on Embase, PubMed and Scopus. Studies were selected for their relevance in terms of regulation of satellite cells by in vivo exercise and muscle contraction in hypoxic conditions.
Satellite cell activation and proliferation seem to be enabled after acute hypoxic exercise via regulations induced by myogenic regulatory factors. Several studies reported also a role of the inflammatory pathway nuclear factor-kappa B and angiogenic factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor, both known to upregulate myogenesis. By stimulating angiogenesis, repeated exercise performed in acute hypoxia might contribute to satellite cell activation. The use of supplement to prevent and ease gestational diabetes (GDM) progression has been examined in various studies, but the results were inconclusive, and studies evaluated dietary supplements separately. The present review aimed to evaluate the efficacy of various dietary supplementation on GDM risk and the surrogate markers for cardiometabolic risk of pregnant women with GDM.
A comprehensive search on multiple databases were performed to identify randomized controlled trials. Random-effects model was used to pool the results in relative risk (RR) or mean difference.
Fifty-three randomized controlled studies with 9443 pregnant women were included. Vitamin D (5 studies, RR 0.64; 95% CI 0.44, 0.94) and myo-inositol (4 studies, RR 0.34, 95% CI 0.20, 0.58) supplementation significantly reduced the risk of GDM. Myo-inositol, probiotics, and vitamin D showed significant intervention effect on surrogate markers related to glycemic control, lipid profile, inflammatory, and oxidative stress. However, the majority of included studies were clustered to Iran and Italy, which might convey a generalizability bias.
Dietary supplementation including vitamin D and myoinositol supplementation has the potential in primary prevention and management of GDM, whereas probiotics demonstrated its ability in GDM management by improving the levels of surrogate markers for cardiometabolic risk. To evaluate the clinical and imaging findings of acute cholecystitis in recent lung transplant patients.
We retrospectively reviewed all abdominal ultrasounds and computed tomography (CT) scans of patients who developed acute cholecystitis in the early postoperative period following lung transplantation from November 2014 to December 2020 in a tertiary care university hospital.
Ten patients (4.4%) were included in this series (6 male, mean age 62.9years ± 2.1 [standard deviation]) of a total 227 lung transplant patients performed from November 2014 to December 2020 (172 unilateral and 55 bilateral). Nine (90%) patients received a double-lung transplant and seven (70%) required extracorporeal circulation during surgery. Acute cholecystitis occurred during the initial admission for lung transplantation (average of 33 ± 25.9days post-transplantation). Six patients (60%) died during admission with an average of 24.3 ± 21.8days after cholecystectomy. The average pedigree completeness index (PCI) and numbers of equivalent complete generations (EqG) were estimated for the entire (PCI = 0.18, EqG = 2.24) and reference (PCI = 0.31, EqG = 3.45) populations. The average generation interval was 3.33 years. The average inbreeding coefficient and the average relatedness were 0.46 and 1.06%, respectively, for the entire population and 0.77 and 3.87% for the reference population. The rate of inbreeding was 0.06% per generation. The effective population size (Ne), estimated from increases in inbreeding coefficients between the first and third equivalent complete generations, was 52.65, but periodic introductions of unrelated breeding males resulted in average inbreeding levels in the reference population that were lower than those predicted from the estimate of Ne. Effective numbers of founders (fe), ancestors (fa), founder genomes equivalents (fg), and non-founder genomes (fng) were 51, 39, 25.8, and 48.2, respectively. The fe/fa ratio in the reference population was 1.31 and indicated that occasional bottlenecks had occurred in the population. The 14 most influential ancestors contributed 50% of the genetic variability in the reference population, with a maximum individual contribution of 9.25%. Approximately 1.9% of the initial heterozygosity had been lost from the population, indicating that substantial genetic diversity still exists in this flock.'Angiodiversity' refers to the structural and functional heterogeneity of endothelial cells (EC) along the segments of the vascular tree and especially within the microvascular beds of different organs. Organotypically differentiated EC ranging from continuous, barrier-forming endothelium to discontinuous, fenestrated endothelium perform organ-specific functions such as the maintenance of the tightly sealed blood-brain barrier or the clearance of macromolecular waste products from the peripheral blood by liver EC-expressed scavenger receptors. The microvascular bed of the liver, composed of discontinuous, fenestrated liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSEC), is a prime example of organ-specific angiodiversity. Anatomy and development of LSEC have been extensively studied by electron microscopy as well as linage-tracing experiments. Recent advances in cell isolation and bulk transcriptomics or single-cell RNA sequencing techniques allowed the identification of distinct LSEC molecular programs and have led to the identification of LSEC subpopulations. LSEC execute homeostatic functions such as fine tuning the vascular tone, clearing noxious substances from the circulation, and modulating immunoregulatory mechanisms. In recent years, the identification and functional analysis of LSEC-derived angiocrine signals, which control liver homeostasis and disease pathogenesis in an instructive manner, marks a major change of paradigm in the understanding of liver function in health and disease. This review summarizes recent advances in the understanding of liver vascular angiodiversity and the functional consequences resulting thereof.The distribution and use of pathogen-free planting material ("clean seeds") is a promising method to control plant diseases in developing countries. We address the question of minimizing disease prevalence in plants through the optimal usage of clean seeds. We consider the simplest possible S-I model together with a simple economic criterion to be maximized. The static optimization problem shows a diversity of possible outcomes depending on economical and epidemiological parameters. We derive a simple condition showing to what extent subsidizing clean seeds relative to the epidemiological features of the disease may help eradicate or control the disease. Then we consider dynamic optimal control and Pontryagin's maximum principle to study the optimal usage of clean seeds to control the disease. The dynamical results are comparable to the static ones and are even simpler in some sense. In particular, the condition on the critical subsidy rate that makes clean seed usage economically viable is unchanged from the static optimization case. We discuss how these results may apply to the control of maize lethal necrosis in East-Africa.
Disease-specific registries, documenting costs and probabilities from pharmacoeconomic studies along with health state utility values from quality-of-life studies could serve as a resource to guide researchers in evaluating the published literature and in the conduct of future economic evaluations for their own research. Registries cataloging economic evaluations currently exist, however they are restricted by the type of economic evaluations they include. There is a need for intervention-specific registries, that document all types of complete and partial economic evaluations and auxiliary information such as quality of life studies. The objective of this study is to describe the development of a pharmacoeconomic registry and provide best practices using an example of hormonal contraceptives.
An expert panel consisting of researchers with expertise in pharmacoeconomics and outcomes research was convened and the clinical focus of the registry was finalized after extensive discussion. A list of key continu data files can be accessed in the supplementary information files.
