The incidence of patella fracture is statistically low (0.5-1.5%) compared to other fractures of the extremities [Patella fractures 76(10)987-997, 2005]. In the latter research, patella fractures if treated surgically present an overall inferior functional outcome. Little is known about the influence of the postoperative patella height on the clinical outcome. Therefore, the aim of our study was to analyse the influence of the patella height on the patients' functional outcome after surgery.
In this retrospective study the in-house trauma register of our level I University trauma center was screened for patients suffering patella fractures treated surgically. Patella height of the same patients was evaluated on lateral X-rays using the Insall-Salvati Ratio (ISR). The patients' X-rays were analyzed at two time points for the ISR, whereas group A presents ISR data right after surgery and group B data at the latest follow up (minimum 6weeks). The change of mean ISR at both time points was tested for significesults demonstrate that different postoperative patella heights apparently do not influence the functional outcome in the short follow-up.
Our results demonstrate that different postoperative patella heights apparently do not influence the functional outcome in the short follow-up.A MnO2 nanosheet-assisted ratiometric fluorescence probe based on carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and o-phenylenediamine (OPD) has been developed for the detection of the anticancer drug 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP). CQDs with strong fluorescence are synthesized via the one-step hydrothermal method. MnO2 nanosheets as an oxidase-mimicking nanomaterial directly oxidize OPD into 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) which has a fluorescence emission at 570 nm, whereas the fluorescence of CQDs at 445 nm is then reduced by the DAP through the inner filter effect (IFE) under a single excitation wavelength (370 nm). After adding 6-MP, MnO2 nanosheets can be reduced to Mn2+ and lose their oxidase-like property, blocking the IFE with the fluorescence decrease of DAP and fluorescence increase of CQDs. The novel ratiometric fluorescence probe exhibits considerable sensitivity toward 6-MP and linear response is in the 0.46-100.0 μmol L-1 concentration range with the detection limit of 0.14 μmol L-1. Furthermore, the probe shows good selectivity when exposed to a series of interfering other organic and inorganic compounds, and biomolecules and can be applied to the detection for 6-MP in human serum samples and pharmaceutical tablets. Satisfactory recoveries of 6-MP in human serum samples are in the range 96.1-110.9% with the RSD of 1.4 to 3.2%. The amount of 6-MP is successfully estimated as 49.3 mg in pharmaceutical tablet with the RSD of about 2.2%.Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease in humans caused by the bite of a parasite-infected sandfly. The disease, widely referred to as "poor man's disease," affects millions of people worldwide. The clinical manifestation of the disease depends upon the species of the parasite and ranges from physical disfigurement to death if left untreated. Here, we review the past, present, and future of leishmaniasis in detail. The life cycle of Leishmania sp., along with its epidemiology, is discussed, and in addition, the line of therapeutics available for treatment currently is examined. The current status of the disease is critically evaluated, keeping emerging threats like human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfection and post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) into consideration. In summary, the review proposes a dire need for new therapeutics and reassessment of the measures and policies concerning emerging threats. New strategies are essential to achieve the goal of leishmaniasis eradication in the next few decades. As the main substance in some traditional Chinese medicines, cucurbitacins have been used to treat hepatitis for decades in China. Currently, the use of cucurbitacins against cancer and other diseases has achieved towering popularity among researchers worldwide, as detailed in this review with summarized tables. Numerous studies have reported the potential tumor-killing activities of cucurbitacins in multiple aspects of human malignancies. Continuous research on its anticancer activity mechanisms also brings a glimmer of light to the treatment of patients with lung cancer. In line with the promising roles of cucurbitacins against cancer, through various molecular signaling pathways, it is justifiable to propose the use of cucurbitacins as a potential mainline chemotherapy before the onset and after the diagnosis of lung cancers. Here, this article mainly summarized the findings about the biological functions and underlying mechanisms of cucurbitacins on lung cancer pathogenesis and treatment. In addition, we also discussed the safety and efficacy of their application for further research and even clinical practice. We report a rare case of dysphagia after occipitocervical fixation, and aim to emphasize the importance of occiput-C2 angle. The kyphotic change of occiput-C2 alignment after operation might lead to dysphagia due to decreased oropharyngeal cross-section area and increased basal pressure of upper esophageal sphincter. Carefully align the occiput-C2 angle during occipitocervical fixation might reduce the incidence of postoperative dysphagia.
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of CT-guided IRE of clinical T1a (cT1a) renal tumours close to vital structures and to assess factors that may influence the technical success and early oncological durability.
CT-guided IRE (2015-2020) was prospectively evaluated. Patients' demographics, technical details/success, Clavien-Dindo (CD) classification of complications (I-V) and oncological outcome were collated. Statistical analysis was performed to determine variables associated with complications. The overall 2- and 3-year cancer-specific (CS), local recurrence-free (LRF) and metastasis-free (MF) survival rates are presented using the Kaplan-Meier curves.
Thirty cT1a RCCs (biopsy-proven/known VHL disease) in 26 patients (age 32-81 years) were treated with IRE. The mean tumour size was 2.5 cm and the median follow-up was 37 months. The primary technical success rate was 73.3%, where 22 RCCs were completely IRE ablated. Seven residual diseases were successfully ablated with cryoablation, achieving an ovetructure.
• Irreversible electroporation should only be considered when surgery or image-guided thermal ablation is not an option for small renal cancer. • This non-thermal technique is safe in the treatment of small renal cancer and the primary technical success rate was 73.3%. • This can be used when renal cancer is close to important structure.
To develop and validate a radiomics signature based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from multicenter datasets for preoperative prediction of pathologic response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in patients with osteosarcoma.
We retrospectively enrolled 102 patients with histologically confirmed osteosarcoma who received chemotherapy before treatment from 4 hospitals (68 in the primary cohort and 34 in the external validation cohort). Quantitative imaging features were extracted from contrast-enhanced fat-suppressed T1-weighted images (CE FS T1WI). Four classification methods, i.e., the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic regression (LASSO-LR), support vector machine (SVM), Gaussian process (GP), and Naive Bayes (NB) algorithm, were compared for feature selection and radiomics signature construction. The predictive performance of the radiomics signatures was assessed with the area under receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis teristics were not associated with response to NAC.
• The radiomics signature based on multicenter contrast-enhanced MRI was useful to predict response to NAC. • The prediction model obtained with the LASSO-LR classifier achieved the best performance. • The baseline clinical characteristics were not associated with response to NAC.Sex determination in mammals is usually provided by a pair of chromosomes, XX in females and XY in males. Mole voles of the genus Ellobius are exceptions to this rule. In Ellobius tancrei, both males and females have a pair of XX chromosomes that are indistinguishable from each other in somatic cells. Nevertheless, several studies on Ellobius have reported that the two X chromosomes may have a differential organization and behavior during male meiosis. It has not yet been demonstrated if these differences also appear in female meiosis. To test this hypothesis, we have performed a comparative study of chromosome synapsis, recombination, and histone modifications during male and female meiosis in E. tancrei. We observed that synapsis between the two X chromosomes is limited to the short distal (telomeric) regions of the chromosomes in males, leaving the central region completely unsynapsed. This uneven behavior of sex chromosomes during male meiosis is accompanied by structural modifications of one of the X chribly due to insufficient homology. Overall, these results reveal new clues about the origin and evolution of sex chromosomes.
The use of face mask is globally recommended as a preventive measure against COVID-19. However, the intraocular pressure (IOP) changes caused by face masks remain unknown. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of wearing surgical and FFP2/N95 face masks during a 400-m walking protocol on IOP in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients.
Thirteen subjects diagnosed of POAG (21 eyes) were enrolled in this study. IOP was measured at baseline, during the 400-m walking protocol and after 5 min of passive recovery while POAG patients wore a surgical mask, FFP2/N95 mask and no mask in randomized order. From the 21 POAG eyes, we analyzed the IOP changes caused by physical exercise with two face masks and without wearing any face mask.
At rest (baseline and recovery measurements), the use of the different face masks did not affect IOP levels (mean differences ranging from 0.1 to 0.6 mmHg). During physical activity, wearing an FFP2/N95 mask caused a small (mean differences ranging from 1 to 2 mmHg), but statistically significant, IOP rise in comparison to both the surgical mask and control conditions (Cohen's d = 0.63 and 0.83, respectively).
Face masks must be used to minimize the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission, and POAG patients can safely use FFP2/N95 and surgical masks at rest. However, due to the IOP rise observed while walking with the FFP2/N95 mask, when possible, POAG patients should prioritized the use of surgical masks during physical activity.

To evaluate the potential impact of rebubbling on the anterior segment parameters and refractive outcomes in patients with graft detachment following uneventful DMEK for Fuchs endothelial dystrophy (FED).
Retrospective institutional cohort study of comparing 34 eyes of 31 patients with rebubbling for graft detachment following Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) to 33 eyes of 28 patients with uneventful DMEK. Main outcome parameters were various corneal parameters obtained by Scheimpflug imaging, refractive outcome, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), and endothelial cell density (ECD).
Anterior and posterior corneal astigmatism, corneal densitometry, central corneal thickness, and anterior chamber depth and volume showed no significant differences. Preoperative distribution of astigmatism axis orientations showed a high proportion of anterior corneal with-the-rule astigmatism (71%) in eyes requiring rebubbling. Mean postoperative cylinder in the rebubbling group (1.21 ± 0.85 D) was significantly higher compared to the controls (p = 0.
