Results indicate ADM in informal settlements are shaped by violence and poor mental health. Interventions geared towards strengthening women's economic position and mental healthcare are recommended. Objective Alcohol use and alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are an increasing concern among veterans, particularly those from recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The study of biomarkers in alcohol use and AUD has moved to enhancing the understanding of the development and maintenance of AUDs, as well as investigating its association with clinical severity and potential predictors of treatment response. Cortisol, a glucocorticoid known as a stress hormone, has been linked with both stress and trauma, as well as increased alcohol suppression effects. Method/Results The present review summarizes existing literature and presents suggestions for future research to evaluate whether cortisol may be a possible biomarker of alcohol use disorder risk in combat veterans. Specifically, aspects of combat deployments and high levels of PTSD, coupled with the stress of reintegration may dysregulate cortisol and increase risk to AUD. There may also be bidirectional impacts, such that alcohol is used as a coping mechanism and can dysregulate hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis functioning and cortisol. Conclusions In the context of this framework, cortisol may serve as a biomarker for the development of AUD, as well as a biomarker of risk or relapse. This review ends with both theoretical and clinical implications, as well as directions for future research.Increasing numbers of women, of all ages, are choosing to travel alone - a trend accompanied by online articles providing advice to them. However, we are aware of only one study examining these articles, and it gave no attention to age. We conduct a content analysis of 75 online articles directed at solo women travelers, including 29 written for older women. Results revealed three themes - regulating risk, letting go, and discovering self. Their prevalence varied by articles' targeted age group, with those aimed at younger women focusing on solo travel's risks and those for older women highlighting its rewards.Haplotype-based association methods have been developed to understand the genetic architecture of complex diseases. Compared to single-variant-based methods, haplotype methods are thought to be more biologically relevant, since there are typically multiple non-independent genetic variants involved in complex diseases, and the use of haplotypes implicitly accounts for non-independence caused by linkage disequilibrium. In recent years, with the focus moving from common to rare variants, haplotype-based methods have also evolved accordingly to uncover the roles of rare haplotypes. One particular approach is regularization-based, with the use of Bayesian least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) as an example. This type of methods has been developed for either case-control population data (the logistic Bayesian Lasso (LBL)) or family data (family-triad-based logistic Bayesian Lasso (famLBL)). In some situations, both family data and case-control data are available; therefore, it would be a waste of resources if only one of them could be analyzed. To make full usage of available data to increase power, we propose a unified approach that can combine both case-control and family data (combined logistic Bayesian Lasso (cLBL)). Through simulations, we characterized the performance of cLBL and showed the advantage of cLBL over existing methods. We further applied cLBL to the Framingham Heart Study data to demonstrate its utility in real data applications. For all orthodontic patients, a detailed clinical examination is essential to obtain the correct diagnosis before the formulation of an orthodontic treatment plan. Additional information may be required from radiographs in order to supplement this clinical examination. While orthodontists principally prescribe dental panoramic tomographs for orthodontic patients to confirm the presence, position and morphology of unerupted teeth, the absence or presence of disease within the supporting structures may be overlooked. This case report presents one such instance where the pre-orthodontic radiographic examination of a young male patient revealed the presence of an asymptomatic odontogenic keratocyst in the right posterior body of the mandible. This case report discusses how this incidental finding was diagnosed, managed and how its surgical treatment subsequently affected the orthodontic management of the patient. Furthermore, this case highlights the importance of undertaking a thorough and systematic approach when analysing any prescribed radiographs, in order to reduce the risk of overlooking any evidence of underlying disease. The p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) can regulate multiple cellular functions including proliferation, survival, and apoptotic cell death. find more The p75NTR is widely expressed in the developing brain and is downregulated as the nervous system matures, with only a few neuronal subpopulations retaining expression into adulthood. However, p75NTR expression is induced following damage to the adult brain, including after traumatic brain injury, which is a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide. A major consequence of traumatic brain injury is the progressive neuronal loss that continues secondary to the initial trauma, which ultimately contributes to cognitive decline. Understanding mechanisms governing this progressive neuronal death is key to developing targeted therapeutic strategies to provide neuroprotection and salvage cognitive function. In this study, we demonstrate that a cortical impact injury to the sensorimotor cortex elicits p75NTR expression in apoptotic neurons in the injury penumbra, confirming previous studies. To establish whether preventing p75NTR induction or blocking the ligands would reduce the extent of secondary neuronal cell death, we used a noninvasive intranasal strategy to deliver either siRNA to block the induction of p75NTR, or function-blocking antibodies to the ligands pro-nerve growth factor and pro-brain-derived neurotrophic factor. We demonstrate that either preventing the induction of p75NTR or blocking the proneurotrophin ligands provides neuroprotection and preserves sensorimotor function.
