The PSF/MMt/CNTOxi and PSF/MMt/GO membranes exhibited the highest adsorption efficiencies. In particular, these adsorptive membranes showed selectivity toward Hg(II), and the Hg(II) extraction percentage was maximized at pH 2. The maximum Hg(II) adsorption capacities of PSF/MMt/CNTOxi and PSF/MMt/GO were 151.36 and 144.89 mg/g, respectively, and the adsorption isotherm was in approval with the Langmuir model. These hybrid nanocomposites can be used in water purification application. The aim of this contribution is to assess the use poly(styrene-co-glycidyl methacrylate-b-styrene) copolymers synthesized by nitroxide mediated polymerization (NMP) as chain extenders in the recycling of poly(lactic acid) biopolyester. Concisely, the addition of such block copolymers during the melt processing of recycled poly(lactic acid) (rPLA) leads to important increases in the viscosity average molecular weight of modified polymeric materials. Molar masses increase from 31,000 g/mol for rPLA to 48,000 g mol-1 for the resulting rPLA/copolymer blends (bPLA). Fortuitously, this last value is nearly the same as the one for pristine PLA, which constitutes a first piece of evidence of the molar mass increase of the recycled biopolymer. Thermograms of chain extended rPLA show significant decreases in cold crystallization temperature and higher crystallinity degrees due to the chain extension process using NMP-synthesized copolymers. It was found that increasing epoxide content in the NMP-synthesized copolymers leads to increased degrees of crystallinity and lower cold crystallization temperatures. The rheological appraisal has shown that the addition of NMP synthesized copolymers markedly increases complex viscosity and elastic modulus of rPLA. Our results indicate that P(S-co-GMA)-b-S) copolymers act as efficient chain extenders of rPLA, likely due to the reaction between the epoxy groups present in P(S-co-GMA)-b-PS and the carboxyl acid groups present in rPLA. This reaction positively affects viscometric molar mass of PLA and its performance.
Ciprofloxacin (CIP), an important broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic, was often used as a template molecule for the preparation of imprinted materials. In this study, methacrylic acid and 2-vinylpyridine were employed for the first time as dual functional monomers for synthesizing ciprofloxacin imprinted polymers.

The chemical and physicochemical properties of synthesized polymers were characterized using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis-differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm. The adsorption properties of ciprofloxacin onto synthesized polymers were determined by batch experiments. The extraction performances were studied using the solid phase extraction and HPLC-UV method.

The molecularly imprinted polymer synthesized with dual functional monomers showed a higher adsorption capacity and selectivity toward the template molecule. The adsorbed amounts of ciprofloxacin onto the imprinted and non-tion capacity and good extraction performance for highly polar template molecules.Finding a practical alternative to decrease the use of conventional polymers in the plastic industry has become an acute concern since industrially-produced plastic waste, mainly conventional food packaging, has become an environmental crisis worldwide. Biodegradable polymers have attracted the attention of researchers as a possible alternative for fossil-based plastics. Chitosan-based packaging materials, in particular, have become a recent focus for the biodegradable food packaging sector due to their biodegradability, non-toxic nature, and antimicrobial properties. Chitosan, obtained from chitin, is the most abundant biopolymer in nature after cellulose. Chitosan is an ideal biomaterial for active packaging as it can be fabricated alone or combined with other polymers as well as metallic antimicrobial particles, either as layers or as coacervates for examination as functional components of active packaging systems. Chitosan-metal/metal oxide bio-nanocomposites have seen growing interest as antimicrobial packaging materials, with several different mechanisms of inhibition speculated to include direct physical interactions or chemical reactions (i.e., the production of reactive oxygen species as well as the increased dissolution of toxic metal cations). The use of chitosan and its metal/metal oxide (i.e., titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and silver nanoparticles) bio-nanocomposites in packaging applications are the primary focus of discussion in this review.Volatile fatty acids obtained from the fermentation of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste can be used as raw materials for non-toxic ethyl ester (EE) synthesis as well as feedstock for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). Taking advantage of the concept of an integrated process of a bio-refinery, in the present paper, a systematic investigation on the extraction of intracellular poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate), produced by mixed microbial culture by using EEs was reported. Among the tested EEs, ethyl acetate (EA) was the best solvent, dissolving the copolymer at the lowest temperature. Then, extraction experiments were carried out by EA at different temperatures on two biomass samples containing PHAs with different average molecular weights. The parallel characterization of the extracted and non-extracted PHAs evidenced that at the lower temperature (100 °C) EA solubilizes preferentially the polymer fractions richer in 3HV comonomers and with the lower molecular weight. By increasing the extraction temperature from 100 °C to 125 °C, an increase of recovery from about 50 to 80 wt% and a molecular weight reduction from 48% to 65% was observed. The results highlighted that the extracted polymer purity is always above 90 wt% and that it is possible to choose the proper extraction condition to maximize the recovery yield at the expense of polymer fractionation and degradation at high temperatures or use milder conditions to maintain the original properties of a polymer.Polyaniline doped with dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid/χ-aluminum oxide (PANDB/χ-Al2O3) conducting core-shell nanocomposites was synthesized via an in situ polymerization method in this study. PANDB was synthesized in the presence of dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA), which functioned as a dopant and surfactant. The electrical conductivity of the conducting PANDB/χ-Al2O3 core-shell nanocomposite was approximately 1.7 × 10-1 S/cm when the aniline/χ-Al2O3 (AN/χ-Al2O3) weight ratio was 1.5. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results indicated that the χ-Al2O3 nanoflakes were thoroughly coated by PANDB to form the core-shell (χ-Al2O3-PANDB) structure. The TEM and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images of the conducting PANDB/χ-Al2O3 core-shell nanocomposites also indicated that the thickness of the PANDB layer (shell) could be increased as the weight ratio of AN/χ-Al2O3 was increased. In this study, the optimum weight ratio of AN/χ-Al2O3 was identified as 1.5. The conducting PANDB/χ-Al2O3 core-shell nanocomposite was then blended with water-based polyurethane (WPU) to form a conducting WPU/PANDB/χ-Al2O3 blend film. The resulting blend film has promising antistatic and electrostatic discharge (ESD) properties.Bioelectricity drives several processes in the human body. The development of new materials that can deliver electrical stimuli is gaining increasing attention in the field of tissue engineering. In this work, novel, highly electrically conductive nanofibers made of poly [2,2'-m-(phenylene)-5,5'-bibenzimidazole] (PBI) have been manufactured by electrospinning and then coated with cross-linked poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly (styrene sulfonic acid) (PEDOTPSS) by spin coating or dip coating. These scaffolds have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging and attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. The electrical conductivity was measured by the four-probe method at values of 28.3 S·m-1 for spin coated fibers and 147 S·m-1 for dip coated samples, which correspond, respectively, to an increase of about 105 and 106 times in relation to the electrical conductivity of PBI fibers. Human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hBM-MSCs) cultured on the produced scaffolds for one week showed high viability, typical morphology and proliferative capacity, as demonstrated by calcein fluorescence staining, 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI)/Phalloidin staining and MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide] assay. Therefore, all fiber samples demonstrated biocompatibility. Overall, our findings highlight the great potential of PEDOTPSS-coated PBI electrospun scaffolds for a wide variety of biomedical applications, including their use as reliable in vitro models to study pathologies and the development of strategies for the regeneration of electroactive tissues or in the design of new electrodes for in vivo electrical stimulation protocols. In recent years biodegradable plastic films have been increasingly used for various purposes, most often as grocery bags and for collecting bio-waste. Typically, the biodegradation of these films should take place in industrial compost facilities where the biodegradation process occurs under controlled conditions. Nevertheless, many of these films are often disposed of in home composting bins, so the aim of this study was to examine the course of biodegradation of compostable plastic films under uncontrolled conditions in garden composting sites during a period of four months. Mechanical properties were tested on seven different commercially available biodegradable films and bags that were placed in a garden composting bin from February to May. Both tensile properties and tensile-impact strength showed some unexpected results in terms of increase of the properties after the first, second, and third month for some films and bags. The same unpredictability was seen in FTIR and TG analyses. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant "superbugs" in recent decades has led to widespread illness and death and is a major ongoing public health issue. Since traditional antimicrobials and antibiotics are in many cases showing limited or no effectiveness in fighting some emerging pathogens, there is an urgent need to develop and explore novel antibacterial agents that are both powerful and reliable. Combining two or more antibiotics or antimicrobials has become a hot topic in antibacterial research. buy CK-666 In this contribution, we report on using a simple electrospinning technique to create an N-halamine/graphene oxide-modified polymer membrane with excellent antibacterial activity. With the assistance of advanced techniques, the as-obtained membrane was characterized in terms of its chemical composition, morphology, size, and the presence of active chlorine. Its antibacterial properties were tested with Escherichia coli (E. coli) as the model bacteria, using the colony-counting method. Interestingly, the final N-halamine/graphene oxide-based antibacterial fibrous membrane inactivated E. coli both on contact and by releasing active chlorine. We believe that the synergistic antimicrobial action of our as-fabricated fibrous membrane should have great potential for utilization in water disinfection, air purification, medical and healthcare products, textile products, and other antibacterial-associated fields.
