The COVID-19 pandemic health crisis has changed household and school routines leaving children and adolescents without important anchors in life. This, in turn, can influence their mental health, changing their behavioral and psychological conditions.
To systematically review the literature to answer the question "What is the worldwide prevalence of mental health effects in children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic?".
Embase, Epistemonikos database, LILACS, PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and World Health Organization Global literature on coronavirus disease were searched. Grey literature was searched on Google Scholar, Grey Literature Report, and Preprint server MedRxiv. Observational studies assessing the prevalence of mental health effects in children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic were included. Four authors independently collected the information and assessed the risk of bias of the included studies.
From a total of 11,925 identified studies, 2873remained after issues. Therefore, policymakers, healthcare planners, youth mental health services, teachers, parents, and researchers need to be prepared to deal with this demand.The neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) plays an important role in the transfer of the immunoglobulin G isotype (IgG) from the mother to the fetus. FcRn-mediated placental transfer of pathogenic antibodies can result in cell and tissue injury in the fetus and neonate, with devastating outcomes. Thus, blockade of FcRn may be an effective treatment strategy in managing these conditions and could additionally reduce the concentration of pathogenic antibodies in the maternal circulation by preventing IgG recycling. In this review, we discuss the biology of FcRn, the rationale and considerations for development of FcRn-blocking agents, and their potential clinical applications in various perinatal immune-mediated diseases. © 2022 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.Gene expression, especially in multispecies experiments, is used to gain insight into the genetic basis of how organisms adapt and respond to changing environments. However, evolutionary processes that can influence gene expression patterns between species such as the presence of paralogues which arise from gene duplication events are rarely accounted for. Paralogous transcripts can alter the transcriptional output of a gene, and thus exclusion of these transcripts can obscure important biological differences between species. To address this issue, we investigated how differences in transcript family size are associated with divergent gene expression patterns in five species of Caribbean reef-building corals. We demonstrate that transcript families that are rapidly evolving in terms of size have increased levels of expression divergence. Additionally, these rapidly evolving transcript families are enriched for multiple biological processes, with genes involved in the coral innate immune system demonstrating pronounced variation in homologue number between species. Overall, this investigation demonstrates the importance of incorporating paralogous transcripts when comparing gene expression across species by influencing both transcriptional output and the number of transcripts within biological processes. As this investigation was based on transcriptome assemblies, additional insights into the relationship between gene duplications and expression patterns will probably emergence once more genome assemblies are available for study.Endometriosis is a chronic systemic disease that can cause pain, infertility and reduced quality of life. Diagnosing endometriosis remains challenging, which yields diagnostic delays for patients. Research on diagnostic test accuracy in endometriosis can be difficult due to verification bias, as not all patients with endometriosis undergo definitive diagnostic testing. The purpose of this State-of-the-Art Review is to provide a comprehensive update on the strengths and limitations of the diagnostic modalities used in endometriosis and discuss the relevance of diagnostic test accuracy research pertaining to each. We performed a comprehensive literature review of the following methods clinical assessment including history and physical examination, biomarkers, diagnostic imaging, surgical diagnosis and histopathology. Our review suggests that, although non-invasive diagnostic methods, such as clinical assessment, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, do not yet qualify formally as replacement tests for surgery in diagnosing all subtypes of endometriosis, they are likely to be appropriate for advanced stages of endometriosis. These protein compartments metabolize specific organic molecules, allowing bacteria to survive in restricted nutrient environments. In this work, 1,2-propanediol utilization microcompartment (PduMCP) was used as a model to study the effect of molecular confinement on the stability and catalytic activity of native enzymes in the microcompartment. A combination of enzyme assays, spectroscopic techniques, binding assays, and computational analysis were used to evaluate the impact of the major shell protein PduBB' on the stability and activity of PduMCP's signature enzyme, dioldehydratase PduCDE. While free PduCDE shows ∼45 % reduction in its optimum activity (activity at 37 °C) when exposed to a temperature of 45 °C, it retains similar activity up to 50 °C when encapsulated within PduMCP. PduBB', a major component of the outer shell of PduMCP, preserves the catalytic efficiency of PduCDE under thermal stress and prevents temperature-induced unfolding and aggregation of PduCDE in vitro. We observed that while both PduB and PduB' interact with the enzyme with micromolar affinity, only the PduBB' combination influences its activity and stability, highlighting the importance of the unique PduBB' combination in the functioning of PduMCP.The study aims to investigate the quality of dentin barriers and pulp reaction to EndoSequence Root Repair Material (ERRM) combined with low-level laser application. Using an intravenous (IV) nicotine infusion procedure that allows precise control of rate of delivery, we examined the impact of nicotine delivery rate on the positive subjective drug effects, smoking urges, withdrawal, heart rate, blood pressure and attention function in smokers. Twenty-four male and female (ages 21-35) dependent smokers attended five experimental sessions, following overnight abstinence from smoking. Using a crossover design, participants attended five sessions, where they were assigned to a random sequence of saline infusion or 1 mg nicotine delivered over 1, 2.5, 5 or 10 min at rates of 1, 0.4, 0.2 or 0.1 mg/min, respectively. The positive subjective effects of nicotine were most robust under the two faster delivery rate conditions, 1- and 0.4-mg nicotine/min. In contrast, all nicotine delivery rates were equally more effective than saline in alleviating urges to smoke. Likewise, nicotine-induced heart rate increases did not vary with the rate of nicotine delivery. Lastly, the cognitive enhancing effects of nicotine were observed only under the two slowest delivery rate conditions-0.1- and 0.2-mg nicotine/min. Collectively, these findings support the critical role of delivery rate in optimizing nicotine's abuse potential versus potential therapeutic effects and have timely implications for developing novel therapeutics for nicotine dependence, as well as for tobacco regulatory science.Adolescence is the peak period for the emergence of substance use, which can lead to long-term psychosocial, occupational and interpersonal complications. Ongoing large-scale, longitudinal, consortium initiatives, such as the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, offer unprecedented opportunities to elucidate key risk factors for problematic substance use in a well-powered sample and to examine how changes in risk factors relate to symptoms across time. Delay discounting has been proposed as a putative risk marker for early substance-use initiation and other forms of psychopathology. However, the extent to which other factors (e.g., socio-economic status and cognitive ability) influence discounting behaviour in young adolescents is not well established. The present study leverages data from the ABCD study (n = 11 045) to assess associations between core demographic and familial variables and delay discounting in youth-operationalized using hyperbolic discounting rates (k)-before the onset of significant psychopathology. Model estimates revealed significant effects of individual difference factors (e.g., sex and socio-economic status) and alcohol risk status (based on family history) on delay discounting. No significant differences were observed in the primary sample when comparing the presence of parent drug problems or prenatal drug exposures. These effects will require replication in later waves of ABCD. Nonetheless, these results provide support for delay discounting as a potential risk marker for problematic alcohol use and demonstrate a relationship between key demographic variables and adolescent discounting behaviour. Further, these results provide an empirical baseline from which developmental trajectories of delay discounting and substance use may be tracked throughout future waves of ABCD.
