Despite the ubiquity of physical systems evolving on time-dependent spatial domains, understanding their regular and chaotic dynamics is still in a rudimentary state. While chaos implies that the system's behavior can be altered by small perturbations, this sensitivity proves to be useful for control purposes. Here we report on the experimental discovery of a novel mechanism to control chaos by time-variation of the system (spatial domain) size depending upon the rate of the latter, the chaotic state may be completely prevented. Our experimental observations are disentangled with theoretical insights and numerical modeling, which also reveals the ability to control spatio-temporal chaos, thus making the findings relevant to a wide range of natural phenomena.Night shift workers are often associated with circadian misalignment and physical discomfort, which may lead to burnout and decreased work performance. Moreover, the irregular work hours can lead to significant negative health outcomes such as poor eating habits, smoking, and being sedentary more often. This paper uses commercial wearable sensors to explore correlates and differences in the level of physical activity, sleep, and circadian misalignment indicators among day shift nurses and night shift nurses. We identify which self-reported assessments of affect, life satisfaction, and sleep quality, are associated with physiological and behavioral signals captured by wearable sensors. The results using data collected from 113 nurses in a large hospital setting, over a period of 10 weeks, indicate that night shift nurses are more sedentary, and report lower levels of life satisfaction than day-shift nurses. Moreover, night shift nurses report poorer sleep quality, which may be correlated with challenges in their attempts to fall asleep on off-days.BRCA1 is a well-studied tumor suppressor involved in the homologous repair of DNA damage, whereas PINK1, a mitochondrial serine/threonine kinase, is known to be involved in mitochondrial quality control. Genetic mutations of PINK1 and Parkin cause autosomal recessive early-onset Parkinson's disease. We found that in breast cancer cells, the mitochondrial targeting reagents, which all induce mitochondrial depolarization along with PINK1 upregulation, induced proteasomal BRCA1 degradation. This BRCA1 degradation was dependent on PINK1, and BRCA1 downregulation upon mitochondrial damage caused DNA double-strand breaks. BRCA1 degradation was mediated through the direct interaction with the E3 ligase Parkin. Strikingly, BRCA1 and PINK1/Parkin expression were inversely correlated in cancerous mammary glands from breast cancer patients. BRCA1 knockdown repressed cancer cell growth, and high BRCA1 expression predicted poor relapse-free survival in breast cancer patients. These observations indicate a novel mechanism by which mitochondrial damage is transmitted to the nucleus, leading to BRCA1 degradation.Paulownia catalpifolia is an important, fast-growing timber species known for its high density, color and texture. However, few transcriptomic and genetic studies have been conducted in P. catalpifolia. In this study, single-molecule real-time sequencing technology was applied to obtain the full-length transcriptome of P. catalpifolia leaves treated with varying degrees of drought stress. The sequencing data were then used to search for microsatellites, or simple sequence repeats (SSRs). A total of 28.83 Gb data were generated, 25,969 high-quality (HQ) transcripts with an average length of 1624 bp were acquired after removing the redundant reads, and 25,602 HQ transcripts (98.59%) were annotated using public databases. Among the HQ transcripts, 16,722 intact coding sequences, 149 long non-coding RNAs and 179 alternative splicing events were predicted, respectively. A total of 7367 SSR loci were distributed throughout 6293 HQ transcripts, of which 763 complex SSRs and 6604 complete SSRs. The SSR appearance frequency was 28.37%, and the average distribution distance was 5.59 kb. Among the 6604 complete SSR loci, 1-3 nucleotide repeats were dominant, occupying 97.85% of the total SSR loci, of which mono-, di- and tri-nucleotide repeats were 44.68%, 33.86% and 19.31%, respectively. We detected 112 repeat motifs, of which A/T (42.64%), AG/CT (12.22%), GA/TC (9.63%), GAA/TTC (1.57%) and CCA/TGG (1.54%) were most common in mono-, di- and tri-nucleotide repeats, respectively. The length of the repeat SSR motifs was 10-88 bp, and 4997 (75.67%) were ≤ 20 bp. This study provides a novel full-length transcriptome reference for P. catalpifolia and will facilitate the identification of germplasm resources and breeding of new drought-resistant P. catalpifolia varieties.Polypharmacy is commonly defined based on the number of medications taken concurrently using standard cut-offs, but several studies have highlighted the need for a multidimensional assessment. We developed a multidimensional measure of polypharmacy and compared with standard cut-offs. Data were extracted for 2141 respondents of the 2007 Prescription Drug Survey, a sub-study of the Health Retirement Study. Latent classes were identified based on multiple indicators of polypharmacy, including quantity, temporality and risk profile. A four-class model was selected based on fit statistics and clinical interpretability 'High risk, long-term' (Class 1), 'Low risk, long-term' (Class 2), 'High risk, short-term' (Class 3), and 'High risk for drug interactions, medium-term, regular' (Class 4). Participants in the 'low risk' class tended to be male, cohabitating, and reported fewer health conditions, compared to 'high risk' classes. The three 'high risk' classes overlapped with the groups concurrently taking 5+ and 9+ medications per month. However, the multidimensional measure further differentiated individuals in terms of risk profile and temporality of medication taking, thus offering a richer assessment of polypharmacy.
