Minimizing alcohol-related hazards amongst young people: a feasibility study of the SHAHRP enter in Brazil universities.

The use of flash-glucose monitoring system FreeStyle Libre (FSL) has demonstrated benefits in metabolic control and quality of life in different populations with diabetes mellitus (DM), being funded in many countries. Due to this, DM subjects on hemodialysis (HD) are using FSL despite the accuracy in this population being unclear. The aims of the present study are to assess the accuracy of FSL in DM subjects on HD, its relationship to hydration status, and patient satisfaction.

A prospective study in 16 patients with DM in a chronic HD program was conducted. Interstitial glucose values from FSL during a 14-day period were compared to capillary glucose measurements obtained at the same time. Hydration status was measured via bioimpedance spectroscopy. Satisfaction with FSL was obtained from an ad hoc satisfaction questionnaire.

A total of 766 paired interstitial and capillary glucose levels were analyzed. A correlation coefficient of 0.936 was determined and a mean absolute relative difference (MARD) value of 23%, increasing to 29% during HD. MARD was not related to hydration status. Interstitial glucose values were lower during HD (100.1 ± 17 mg/dL) than within the 12 hours after (125.1 ± 39 mg/dL;
= .012) and the days without HD (134.2 ± 32 mg/dL;
= .001). Subjects showed high satisfaction with FSL.

The accuracy of FSL in DM patients on HD is lower than in other populations, especially during HD sessions and is not related with the hydration status. Despite this, the degree of patient satisfaction with FSL is very high.

This pilot randomized controlled trial evaluated acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) guided self-help using The Diet Trap for 55 overweight/obese adults high in weight self-stigma. Participants were randomized to the ACT self-help book plus phone coaching (GSH-P; n = 17), self-help book plus email prompts only (GSH-E; n = 20), or a waitlist condition (n = 18), with online self-report assessments at baseline and posttreatment (8 weeks later). Participants reported high satisfaction ratings and engagement with the ACT self-help book, with no differences between GSH-P and GSH-E. Both GSH-P and GSH-E improved weight self-stigma relative to waitlist with large effect sizes. There were mixed findings for health outcomes. The GSH-P condition improved more on healthy eating behaviors and general physical activity, but neither ACT condition improved more than waitlist on self-reported body mass index, emotional eating, and a second measure of physical activity. Results suggest an ACT self-help book with email prompts can reduce weight self-stigma and potentially improve some health behavior outcomes. Phone coaching may provide additional benefits for generalizing ACT to diet and physical activity.In rural China, where families serve as critical safety-nets for their vulnerable members, grandparents play an essential role caring for the offspring of their migrant children. Evidence is mixed as to whether caring for grandchildren provides health benefits or incurs health risks. In this article, we used six waves of data from a study in rural China to examine the impact of caregiving for grandchildren on grandparents' emotional and cognitive health. Further, we examined financial transfers from adult children as a resource that potentially moderates the impact of high intensity caregiving on these outcomes. Data derived from six waves (2001-2015) of the Longitudinal Study of Older Adults in Anhui Province, China. We constructed 2,835 person-interval observations derived from 1,067 grandparents to examine lagged change in depressive symptoms and cognitive ability. Results show that caregiving frequency is not by itself harmful or beneficial to the emotional and cognitive health of grandparents, but it does appear to be harmful in the context of custodial care that is less economically supported by adult children. These results are discussed in terms of their relevance to intergenerational reciprocity in a filial culture, time-for-money exchange expectations, and the need for financial resources among caregiving grandparents in rural China.Rapid and safe treatment of harvested fresh biomass of hyperaccumulators is essential for phytoremediation of metal-contaminated soils. Here, an electro-Fenton (EF) process was used to remove cadmium (Cd) and chemical oxidation demand (COD) from waste liquor from the dewatering of biomass of the hyperaccumulator Sedum plumbizincicola after flocculation precipitation. The results showed that the order of impact of the factors on the removal rate of COD and Cd was pH > electrical current density > H2O2 dosage. Increasing pH promoted Cd removal but hindered COD removal. As current density and H2O2 dosage increased the removal rates of both Cd and COD initially increased and then decreased. Compared to an electrocoagulation process, the addition of H2O2 in EF process greatly enhanced Cd and zinc (Zn) removal. Speciation analysis showed that most of the Cd and Zn in the initial liquor were organically and inorganically complexed. At optimal conditions, e.g., pH 5, current density 15 mA cm-2 and H2O2 dosage 9 g L-1, the removal efficiencies of Cd, Zn and COD reached 99.4, 99.9 and 55.5% after 80 min of EF treatment. Electro-Fenton process can therefore be used to quickly remove trace metals from the waste liquor of the hyperaccumulator.The main reasons for food decay are oxidative reactions and bacterial growth. The food industry has tried to solve these problems either by incorporating additives into foods or by implementing different packaging techniques. However, there is a tendency to incorporate additives into packaging materials, especially those of natural origin. Due to the multiple properties and their extensive accessibility, Mediterranean herbs have been used since ancient times for culinary and pharmacological purposes. This review includes up-to-date information concerning the materials employed and the techniques to produce Mediterranean herbal coatings and films, as well as the sensory changes during the storage within different food categories. Mediterranean herbs have polyphenols, terpenoids, and flavonoids with antimicrobial and antioxidant activity that can used to produce different active systems sachets, multilayers, labels and coatings. selleck screening library Moreover, the use of essential oils or volatile essential oils from Mediterranean herbs in coatings and films can improve the properties of packaging system and extend the shelf-life of muscle products, fruit and vegetables. The impact of essential oils components in the sensory attributes of coated foods is the current main challenge for the use of these bioactive components in active packaging.Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) often have deficits in interpersonal skills due to limited social-communication opportunities. Knowing how to engage in "small talk" or simple social conversational exchanges can be beneficial in postsecondary schooling, employment sites, community environments, and social gatherings. Recently, covert audio coaching (CAC) showed a positive impact on increasing conversational exchanges. As the COVID-19 pandemic increased the need for remote delivery tools, we explored the effectiveness of remote audio coaching (RAC) to teach this skill to college students with IDD. We used a multiple baseline design across participants to examine whether RAC might increase on-topic, small talk conversational exchanges. Results demonstrated that RAC effectively increased small talk skills between participants and a confederate. Upon removal of RAC, all participants still performed above their baselines, with two participants maintaining near mastery levels 2 weeks after the intervention was removed. Limitations and future research are discussed.Oral candidiasis are among the most common noncommunicable diseases, related with serious local and systemic illnesses. Although these infections can occur in all kinds of patients, they are more recurrent in immunosuppressed ones such as patients with HIV, hepatitis, cancer or under long antimicrobial treatments. Candida albicans continues to be the most frequently identified Candida spp. in these disorders, but other non-C. albicans Candida are rising. Understanding the immune responses involved in oral Candida spp. infections is a key feature to a successful treatment and to the design of novel therapies. In this review, we performed a literature search in PubMed and WoS, in order to examine and analyze common oral Candida spp.-bacteria/Candida-Candida interactions and the host immunity response in oral candidiasis.Our study aimed to investigate the association between domestic physical violence in pregnancy and feto-infant outcomes among Afghan women. Our study design was a cross-sectional study that utilized secondary data from the 2015 Afghanistan Demographic and Health Survey conducted in 33 provinces of Afghanistan (n = 19 676). We used multiple logistic regression models to evaluate the relationship between domestic violence and early-pregnancy loss, perinatal, and neonatal mortality, with adjustments for confounders. Our results indicate that approximately 16.66% (n = 3278) of Afghan women experienced domestic violence while pregnant. In the adjusted models, we found that domestic physical violence in pregnancy was significantly associated with early-pregnancy loss (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.58, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.32-1.88), but not with perinatal mortality (AOR = 1.12, 95% CI = 0.96-1.32) and neonatal mortality (AOR = 1.10, 95% CI = 0.95-1.28). The higher odds of adverse birth outcomes among victims of domestic violence underlines the necessity for interventions to address violence against women in Afghanistan.
This case study discusses Mathematica's experience providing large-scale evaluation technical assistance (ETA) to 65 grantees across two cohorts of Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) Program grants. The grantees were required to conduct rigorous evaluations with specific evaluation benchmarks. This case study provides an overview of the TPP grant program, the evaluation requirements, the ETA provider, and other key stakeholders and the ETA provided to the grantees. Finally, it discusses the successes, challenges, and lessons learned from the effort.

One important lesson learned is that there are two related evaluation features, strong counterfactuals and insufficient target sample sizes, that funders should attend to prior to selecting awardees because they are not easy to change through ETA. In addition, if focused on particular outcomes (for TPP, the goal was to improve sexual behavior outcomes), the funder should prioritize studies with an opportunity to observe differences in these outcomes across conditions; several TPP grantees served young populations, and sexual behavior outcomes were not observed or were rare, limiting the opportunity to observe impacts.
