However, in an ecological/evolutionary context such studies remain scarce. We measured spatial differences in wing wettability in Lestes sponsa (Odonata Lestidae), a damselfly species that can submerge during oviposition, and discussed the possible functional significance. Using dynamic contact angle (CA) measurements together with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), we investigated differences in wettability among distal, middle and proximal wing regions, and in surface nanostructures potentially responsible for observed differences. As we moved from distal towards more proximal parts, mean values of advancing and receding CAs gradually increased from 104° to 149°, and from 67° to 123°, respectively, indicating that wing tips were significantly less hydrophobic than more proximal parts. Moreover, values of CA hysteresis for the respective wing parts decreased from 38° to 26°, suggesting greater instability of the structure of the wing tips. Accordingly, compared with more proximal parts, SEM revealed higher damage of the wax nanostructures at the distal region. The observed wettability gradient is well explained by the submergence behaviour of L. sponsa during underwater oviposition. Our study thus proposed the existence of species-dependent hydrophobicity gradient on odonate wings caused by different ovipositional strategies.Emergence of collective, as well as superorganism-like, behaviour in biological populations requires the existence of rules of communication, either direct or indirect, between organisms. Because reaching an understanding of such rules at the individual level can be often difficult, approaches carried out at higher, or effective, levels of description can represent a useful alternative. In the present work, we show how a spin-glass approach characteristic of statistical physics can be used as a tool to characterize the properties of the spatial occupancy patterns of a biological population. We exploit the presence of pairwise interactions in spin-glass models for detecting correlations between occupancies at different sites in the media. Such correlations, we claim, represent a proxy to the existence of planned and/or social strategies in the spatial organization of the population. Our spin-glass approach does not only identify those correlations but produces a statistical replica of the system (at the level of occupancy patterns) that can be subsequently used for testing alternative conditions/hypothesis. Here, this methodology is presented and illustrated for a particular case of study we analyse occupancy patterns of Aphaenogaster senilis ants during foraging through a simplified environment consisting of a discrete (tree-like) artificial lattice. In four experiments, we assessed ratings for attractiveness and two common measures of distinctiveness ('distinctiveness-in-the-crowd', DITC and 'deviation-based distinctiveness', DEV) for faces and voices (simple vowels, or more naturalistic sentences) from 64 young adult speakers (32 female). Consistent and substantial negative correlations between attractiveness and DEV generally supported the averageness account of attractiveness, for both voices and faces. By contrast, and indicating that both measures of distinctiveness reflect different constructs, correlations between attractiveness and DITC were numerically positive for faces (though small and non-significant), and significant for voices in sentence stimuli. Between faces and voices, distinctiveness ratings were uncorrelated. Remarkably, and at variance with the honest signal hypothesis, vocal and facial attractiveness were also uncorrelated in all analyses involving naturalistic, i.e. sentence-based, speech. This result pattern was confirmed using a new set of stimuli and raters (experiment 5). The method relies on synchronous spectrofluorimetry to solve the problem of the overlapping emission spectra of the studied drugs. Using second derivative synchronous spectra enabled the simultaneous quantitation of bambuterol and montelukast without interference. The peak amplitudes of the aqueous solutions at Δλ = 20 nm were estimated at 284 and 304 nm for bambuterol and at 374 and 384 nm for montelukast. A linear relationship was achieved over the concentration range of 0.2-1.00 µg ml-1 for bambuterol and 0.4-2.00 µg ml-1 for montelukast. To make urban transport sustainable, cities are increasingly investing to develop their bicycle networks. However, it is yet unclear how to extend them comprehensively and effectively given a limited budget. Here we investigate the structure of bicycle networks in cities around the world, and find that they consist of hundreds of disconnected patches, even in cycling-friendly cities like Copenhagen. To connect these patches, we develop and apply data-driven, algorithmic network growth strategies, showing that small but focused investments allow to significantly increase the connectedness and directness of urban bicycle networks. We introduce two greedy algorithms to add the most critical missing links in the bicycle network focusing on connectedness, and show that they outmatch both a random approach and a baseline minimum investment strategy. Our computational approach outlines novel pathways from car-centric towards sustainable cities by taking advantage of urban data available on a city-wide scale.
