In adulthood, both males and females prenatally exposed to high, but not low, doses of fluoxetine exhibited an increase in repetitive behaviors in the marble burying task and a decrease in sucrose preference. Males, but not females, exposed to fluoxetine exhibited increased anxiety-related behaviors in the elevated plus maze. Prenatal fluoxetine exposure did not affect other adult behaviors including social preference, self-grooming, passive avoidance and open field activity. These findings suggest males are more sensitive than females to disruptions in serotonin balance during prenatal development and highlight the need for additional systematic and mechanistic studies to evaluate the impact of fluoxetine exposure during other periods of gestation.Since the membrane-related processes represent an integral part of the biological activities of drugs, their effect on the membrane dynamics is actually considered. In this study, we investigated the effect of pentacyclic triterpenes (TTPs), oleanolic acid (OA) and erythrodiol (ER), on the fluidity and permeability of liposomes membranes differing by their cholesterol content. All liposomes were prepared by reverse phase evaporation technique (REV). Spin-labeled liposomes exposed or not to TTPs were used for fluidity studies by using 5- and 16-doxyl stearic acids (DSA). TTPs-loaded liposomes (phospholipidcholesterol of 11), and preformed vesicles exposed to TTPs were used for permeability studies by monitoring the release of sulforhodamine B (SRB) at 37 °C. The apparent release constants of SRB were determined by Higuchi model based on a biphasic curve shape (0-10 h; 10-48 h). TTPs-loaded liposomes were characterized for their size and homogeneity. Results showed that ER increased the membrane fluidity at the upper region of the membrane while the both TTPs produced a condensing effect at the deeper region of the membrane. The membrane composition was a critical parameter modulating the effect of TTPs on the membrane permeability. Also, this study consolidated the fact that a fluidizing membrane agent is not necessarily a permeabilizing-membrane compound.Adequately processed X-ray micro-computed tomography images of real pharmaceutical formulations provide the possibility to validate in silico tools for the prediction of disintegration and/or dissolution. However, the evaluation of suitable image processing pathways is time consuming. The objective of this study was to prove the transferability of image processing methods and to develop an approach to select probable favourable image processing approaches for data sets with similar properties to accelerate the evaluation process. Therefore, data from a previously performed evaluation of image processing approaches and parameters were used to analyse the robustness of the image processing by statistical resampling and to develop a predictive rule set. The rule set was verified by both one new ratio of API and excipient within and outside of the ratios used to develop the rule. The rule was applied to images of a binary mixture with new compounds with similar determined image properties to prove the transferability of the rule set. It was possible to identify robust image processing pathways with narrow ranges of input parameters. The prediction of the image processing pathways led to high desirabilities which were confirmed by visual verification for ratios within the calibrated range. The transfer to the new binary mixture was successful and confirmed as well.Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in the female population with a high mortality rate. Despite the satisfying depth of studies evaluating the contributory role of immune checkpoints in this malignancy, few articles have reviewed the pros and cons of immune checkpoint blockades (ICBs). In the current review, we provide an overview of immune-related inhibitory molecules and also discuss the original data obtained from international research laboratories on the aberrant expression of T and non-T cell-associated immune checkpoints in breast cancer. Then, we especially focus on recent studies that utilized ICBs as the treatment strategy in breast cancer and provide their efficiency reports. As there are always costs and benefits, we discuss the limitations and challenges toward ICB therapy such as adverse events and drug resistance. In the last section, we allocate an overview of the recent data concerning the application of nanoparticle systems for cancer immunotherapy and propose that nano-based ICB approaches may overcome the challenges related to ICB therapy in breast cancer. In conclusion, it seems it is time for nanoscience to more rapidly move forward into clinical trials and illuminates the breast cancer treatment area with its potent features for the target delivery of ICBs.This study provides a sustainable manner for direct cultivation of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) by addition of mycelial pellets (MPs) into continuous-flow aerobic MBR. The results showed that the granulation time in MPs-MBR was shortened by at least 65 days, accounting for enhanced mean size of granules (0.68-0.76 mm), increased mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration (12.8 g/L) and improved settling ability (78.1 mL/g), in comparison with that of 0.23-0.28 mm, 9.8 g/L and 102.1 mL/g in control MBR. MPs-MBR demonstrated significant advantages in terms of COD reduction (97.0-99.1%), NH4+-N reduction (100%) and TN reduction (32.27-42.33%). MPs, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and filamentous bacteria acted as inducible nucleus, crosslinking matter and supporting skeleton, respectively, in favor of promoting the formation and stabilization of AGS with a four-layered structure. The relevant mechanism was underlined by rheological analysis, indicating that MPs addition enhanced non-Newtonian flow characteristics and network structure of sludge.Thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP), as a step prior to sludge anaerobic digestion (AD), is widely applied due to its effectiveness in enhancing organic solids hydrolysis and subsequent biogas productivity. However, THP also induces a series of problems including formation of refractory compounds in THP cylinder, high residual ammonia and organic in the AD centrate, inhibition on downstream nitrogen removal process and reduction in UV-disinfection effectiveness during post-treatment. More attention should be paid on how to mitigate these negative effects. Despite intensive studies were carried out to reduce refractory compounds formation and enhance biological performance, there is limited effort to discuss the solutions to tackle the THP associated problems in a holistic manner. This paper summarizes the solutions developed to date and analyzes their technology readiness to assess application potential in full-scale settings. The content highlights the limitations of THP and proposes potential solutions to address the technological challenges.Fungal pellet is an emerging material to collect oleaginous microalgae, but rare studies have noticed that harvested water is available resource for the next round of cultivation. To systematically optimize regrowth performances of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, separated water after harvesting by fungi Aspergillus oryzae was prepared under different N/P ratios. The results showed that chlorophylls and enzymes were significantly affected by the proportion of N and P. Although nutrient deficiency was functioned as a stress factor to restrict carbohydrate and protein synthesis, lipid content was obviously increased by 12.69%. The percentage of saturated fatty acids associated with oxidation stability increased, while this part in fresh wastewater accounted for only 36.96%. The favorable biomass concentration (1.37 g/L) with the highest lipid yield (0.42 g/L) appeared in N/P of 61. More strikingly, suitable conditions could save 52.4% of cultivation costs. These experiments confirmed that reusing bioflocculated water could be effectively utilized for biodiesel production. The bioremediation of emerging pollutants in wastewater via algal biotechnology has been emerging as a cost-effective and low-energy input technological solution. Androgen Receptor Antagonist However, the algal bioremediation technology is still not fully developed at a commercial level. The development of different technologies and new strategies to cater specific needs have been studied. The existence of multiple emerging pollutants and the selection of microalgal species is a major concern. The rate of algal bioremediation is influenced by various factors, including accidental contaminations and operational conditions in the pilot-scale studies. Algal-bioremediation can be combined with existing treatment technologies for efficient removal of emerging pollutants from wastewater. This review mainly focuses on algal-bioremediation systems for wastewater treatment and pollutant removal, the impact of emerging pollutants in the environment, selection of potential microalgal species, mechanisms involved, and challenges in removing emerging pollutants using algal-bioremediation systems.Manufacturing high-performance activated carbon (AC) materials from abundant biomass at low temperature and short activation time is targeted by the green and sustainable chemical industry. Here, a 1980 m2/g of carbon nanospheres-anchored porous carbon material (PHAC) derived from waste sawdust was prepared by a method of H3PO4 hydrothermal combined with fast activation at 450 °C within 2.8 min. It is found that H3PO4 hydrothermal pretreatment could promote the dehydration of carbohydrates to form more unstable C = O structures, which were decomposed in the subsequent fast activation to form pore structures. In addition, this process is also conducive to the formation of carbon nanospheres, increasing the degree of graphitization and producing more graphite defects. The prepared PHAC showed good adsorption performance for different types of pollutants. This work provides a new insight for the preparation of high performance biomass based carbon materials under mild conditions. The widespread distribution of organic and inorganic pollutants in water resources have increased due to rapid industrialization. Rhizospheric zone-associated bacteria along with endophytic bacteria show a significant role in remediation of various pollutants. Metaomics technologies are gaining an advantage over traditional methods because of their capability to obtain detailed information on exclusive microbial communities in rhizosphere of the plant including the unculturable microorganisms. Transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics are functional methodologies that help to reveal the mechanisms of plant-microbe interactions and their synergistic roles in remediation of pollutants. Intensive analysis of metaomics data can be useful to understand the interrelationships of various metabolic activities between plants and microbes. This review comprehensively discusses recent advances in omics applications made hitherto to understand the mechanisms of plant-microbe interactions during phytoremediation. It extends the delivery of the insightful information on plant-microbiomes communications with an emphasis on their genetic, biochemical, physical, metabolic, and environmental interactions.
