We first assessed differences in shape variation and covariation in captive-reared and wild-caught wild boars, taking into account differences in sex, body mass, available space for movement and muscle force. This plastic signal was then contrasted with the phenotypic changes induced by selective breeding in domestic pigs. We found that mobility reduction induces a plastic response beyond the shape variation of wild boars in their natural habitat, associated with a reduction in the range of locomotor behaviours and muscle loads. The modular reconfigurable nature allows the user to customize the system to their specific needs and adapt/upgrade the system as challenges arise, without requiring specialized technical skills. © 2020 The Authors.Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on 2,5-dihydroxyterepthalic acid (DOBDC) as the linker show very high CO2 uptake capacities at low to moderate CO2 pressures; however, these MOFs often require expensive solvent for synthesis and are difficult to regenerate. We have synthesized a Mn-DOBDC MOF and modified it to introduce amine groups into the structure by functionalizing its metal coordination sites with ethylenediamine (EDA). Repeat framework synthesis was then also successfully performed using recycled dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. Characterization by elemental analysis, FTIR and thermogravimetric studies suggest that EDA molecules are successfully substituting the original metal-bound DMF. This modification not only enhances the material's carbon dioxide sorption capacity, increasing stability to repeated CO2 sorption cycles, but also improves the framework's stability to moisture. Here, we investigated whether the silkworm lemon mutant could serve as a model of SR deficiency. A point mutation in the BmSPR gene led to a five amino acid deletion at the carboxyl terminus in the lemon mutant. In addition, classical phenotypes seen in SR deficient patients were observed in the lemon mutant, including a normal phenylalanine level, a decreased dopamine and serotonin content, and an increased neopterin level. A recovery test showed that the replenishment of l-dopa significantly increased the dopamine level in the lemon mutant. The silkworm lemon mutant also showed negative behavioural abilities. These results suggest that the silkworm lemon mutant has an appropriate genetic basis and meets the biochemical requirements to be a model of SR deficiency. One adaption to parasites consists of recognizing and avoiding substrates or cues that indicate their presence. Among substrates harbouring infectious agents, faeces are known to elicit avoidance behaviour in numerous animal species. However, the function and mechanisms of faeces avoidance in non-human primates has been largely overlooked by scientists. In this study, we used an experimental approach to investigate whether aversion to faeces in a foraging context is mediated by visual and olfactory cues in two cercopithecoid primates mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) and long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis). Visual and olfactory cues of faeces elicited lower food consumption rates in mandrills and higher food manipulation rates in long-tailed macaques. Both results support the infection-avoidance hypothesis and confirm similar tendencies observed in other primate species. More studies are now needed to investigate the divergence of avoidance strategies observed in non-human primates regarding food contamination. © 2020 The Authors.Stem cells are important to generate all specialized tissues at an early life stage, and in some systems, they also have repair functions to replenish the adult tissues. Repeated cell divisions lead to the accumulation of molecular damage in stem cells, which are commonly recognized as drivers of ageing. In this paper, a novel model is proposed to integrate stem cell proliferation and differentiation with damage accumulation in the stem cell ageing process. A system of two structured PDEs is used to model the population densities of stem cells (including all multiple progenitors) and terminally differentiated (TD) cells. In this system, cell cycle progression and damage accumulation are modelled by continuous dynamics, and damage segregation between daughter cells is considered at each division. Analysis and numerical simulations are conducted to study the steady-state populations and stem cell damage distributions under different damage segregation strategies. Our simulations suggest that equal distribution of the damaging substance between stem cells in a symmetric renewal and less damage retention in stem cells in the asymmetric division are favourable strategies, which reduce the death rate of the stem cells and increase the TD cell populations. Moreover, asymmetric damage segregation in stem cells leads to less concentrated damage distribution in the stem cell population, which may be more robust to the stochastic changes in the damage. The feedback regulation from stem cells can reduce oscillations and population overshoot in the process, and improve the fitness of stem cells by increasing the percentage of cells with less damage in the stem cell population. © 2020 The Authors.Sharing data and code are important components of reproducible research. Data sharing in research is widely discussed in the literature; however, there are no well-established evidence-based incentives that reward data sharing, nor randomized studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of data sharing policies at increasing data sharing. A simple incentive, such as an Open Data Badge, might provide the change needed to increase data sharing in health and medical research. This study was a parallel group randomized controlled trial (protocol registration doi10.17605/OSF.IO/PXWZQ) with two groups, control and intervention, with 80 research articles published in BMJ Open per group, with a total of 160 research articles. The intervention group received an email offer for an Open Data Badge if they shared their data along with their final publication and the control group received an email with no offer of a badge if they shared their data with their final publication. The primary outcome was the data sharing rate. Badges did not noticeably motivate researchers who published in BMJ Open to share their data; the odds of awarding badges were nearly equal in the intervention and control groups (odds ratio = 0.9, 95% CI [0.1, 9.0]). Data sharing rates were low in both groups, with just two datasets shared in each of the intervention and control groups. The global movement towards open science has made significant gains with the development of numerous data sharing policies and tools. What remains to be established is an effective incentive that motivates researchers to take up such tools to share their data. © 2020 The Authors.Corn stalk was used as the initial material to prepare a corn stalk matrix-g-polyacrylonitrile-based adsorbent. At first, the corn stalk was treated with potassium hydroxide and nitric acid to obtain the corn stalk-based cellulose (CS), and then the CS was modified by 2-bromoisobutyrylbromide (2-BiBBr) to prepare a macroinitiator. After that, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was grafted onto the macroinitiator by single-electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET-LRP). A novel adsorbent AO CS-g-PAN was, therefore, obtained by introducing amidoxime groups onto the CS-g-PAN with hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH2OH · HCl). FTIR, SEM and XPS were applied to characterize the structure of AO CS-g-PAN. The adsorbent was then employed to remove Pb(II) and Cu(II), and it exhibited a predominant adsorption performance on Pb(II) and Cu(II). The effect of parameters, such as temperature, adsorption time, pH and the initial concentration of metal ions on adsorption capacity, were examined in detail during its application. Results suggest that the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) and Cu(II) was 231.84 mg g-1 and 94.72 mg g-1, and the corresponding removal efficiency was 72.03% and 63%, respectively. The pseudo-second order model was more suitable to depict the adsorption process. And the adsorption isotherm of Cu(II) accorded with the Langmuir model, while the Pb(II) conformed better to the Freundlich isotherm model. © 2020 The Authors.
