With 20 million living veterans and millions more immediate family members, and approximately 9 million veterans enrolled in the nationally networked VA healthcare system, representing the interests and needs of veterans in this complex community is a substantial endeavor. Based on the importance of engaging Veterans in research, the VA Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) Service convened a Working Group of VA researchers and Veterans to conduct a review of patient engagement models and develop recommendations for an approach to engage Veterans in health research that would incorporate their unique lived experiences and interests, and their perspectives on research priorities. The Working Group considered the specific context for Veteran engagement in research that includes other VA stakeholders from the operational and clinical leadership of the VA Health Administration (VHA). The resulting model identifies the range of potential stakeholders and three domains of relevant constructs-processes expected to facilitate Veteran engagement in research with other stakeholders, individual stakeholder and external factors, and outcomes. The expectation is that Veteran engagement will benefit research to policy and practice translation, including increasing the transparency of research and producing knowledge that is readily accepted and implemented in healthcare.
Engaging patients and other stakeholders as partners in research offers promise in improving the relevance and usefulness of research findings.

Partner influence was also dynamic and iterative, taking different forms over the course of the study. Across studies, we identified 387 discrete examples of influence and classified each as one of five types of influence, derived inductively from the interview data co-producing, restitutions supporting engagement, measurement efforts, and clinical researchers aiming to conduct engaged research and observe similar influences and impacts in their own studies.

Establish and sustain a Veteran engagement board involving older Veterans and caregivers to provide input on aging-related research and clinical demonstration projects.

The Older Veteran Engagement Team (OVET)-a group of eight Veterans and one caregiver who range in age from 62 to 92-was formed in November 2017 and has met monthly since January 2018. The OVET provides feedback on topics that reflect the foci of the VA Eastern Colorado Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) (e.g., physical functioning, hearing health, and emotional wellness/mental health). Ongoing evaluation documents the return on investment of Veteran engagement.

The OVET member and provider/investigator meeting evaluations with longitudinal follow-up at 6 and 12 months.

Return on investment of Veteran engagement is multi-faceted. For OVET, ROI ranges from grant support support patient-centered care and promote the characteristics of an age-friendly healthcare system.
The OVET is similar to other established stakeholder engagement groups; team members offer their individual viewpoints at any stage of research, clinical demonstration, or quality improvement projects. The OVET provides a mechanism for the voice of older Veterans and caregivers to shape aspects of individual projects. Importantly, these projects support patient-centered care and promote the characteristics of an age-friendly healthcare system.
Meaningful engagement of patients in health research has the potential to increase research impact and foster patient trust in healthcare. For the past decade, the Veterans Health Administration (VA) has invested in increasing Veteran engagement in research.

We sought the perspectives of women Veterans, VA women's health primary care providers (WH-PCPs), and administrators on barriers to and facilitators of health research engagement among women Veterans, the fastest growing subgroup of VA users.

Semi-structured qualitative telephone interviews were conducted from October 2016 to April 2018.

Women Veterans (N=31), WH-PCPs (N=22), and administrators (N=6) were enrolled across five VA Women's Health Practice-Based Research Network sites.

Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. Consensus-based coding was conducted by two expert analysts.

All participants endorsed the importance of increasing patient engagement in women's health research. Women Veterans expressed altruistic motives as a personor more meaningful interventions and infrastructure.
Participants expressed support for increasing women Veterans' engagement in women's health research and identified feasible ways to foster and implement engagement of women Veterans. Given the unique healthcare needs of women Veterans, engaging them in research could translate to improved care, especially for future generations. Knowledge about how to improve women Veterans' research engagement can inform future VA policy and practice for more meaningful interventions and infrastructure.
Engagement of relevant stakeholders' ideas, opinions, and concerns is critical to the success of modern research projects. We have developed a tool to measure stakeholder engagement, called the Research Engagement Survey Tool (REST). The purpose of this paper is to present the implementation and uptake of the stakeholder engagement measure REST among research teams, including the assessment of barriers and facilitating factors for use of the new research engagement measure in practice.

In this implementation study, project team members participated in baseline and follow-up web-based surveys. Web-based interviews were conducted with a subset of project teams that implemented the REST. On the baseline survey, project teams were asked to provide details about up to three ongoing or recently completed projects, were asked if they agreed with compensation for REST completion, and were asked if they would like to send the survey to stakeholders or would prefer our project team to email their project stakeholde ongoing research projects.
Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) is feasible for pituitary adenomas, but post-surgery GKRS may cause severe hormone deficits. We reviewed the literature on primary GKRS for pituitary adenoma focusing on radiation-induced hormone deficiencies.

PubMed, Web-of-Science, Scopus, and Cochrane were searched upon the PRISMA guidelines to include studies describing primary GKRS for pituitary adenomas. Pooled-rates of GKRS-induced hormone deficiencies and clinical-radiological responses were analyzed with a random-effect model meta-analysis.

We included 24 studies comprising 1381 patients. Prolactinomas were the most common (34.2%), and 289 patients had non-functioning adenomas (20.9%). Median tumor volume was 1.6cm
(range, 0.01-31.3), with suprasellar extension and cavernous sinus invasion detected in 26% and 31.1% cases. GKRS was delivered with median marginal dose 22.6Gy (range, 6-49), maximum dose 50Gy (range, 25-90), and isodose line 50% (range, 9-100%). Median maximum point doses were 9Gy (range, 0.5-25) tup are of primary importance.

A guideline development group consisting of nine members representing four German dental and medical organizations was formed, in order to provide critical information and orientation to the main stakeholders (dentists and patients), regarding the use of MAD for the treatment of OSA within dental sleep medicine.

This guideline aims to inform physicians and dentists, particularly those with acquired qualification/specialization in sleep medicine (or in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders), as well as experts, payers, and patients. Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, and it places a significant economic strain on the healthcare system around the world. Although the exact mechanism of epilepsy has yet to be illustrated, various pathogenic cascades involving neurotransmitters and trace elements have been reported. We aimed to investigate the serum levels of growth-associated protein-43 (GAP-43) and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) among cohort of Egyptian children with epilepsy and correlate these biomarkers with their zinc levels.

This case-control study included 50 pediatric patients with epilepsy who were comparable with 50 controls. Neurological assessment and electroencephalogram (EEG) were done to all included children. Biochemical measurements of serum GAP-43 and NT-3 using enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and zinc using colorimetric assays, were performed to all participants.

There was significantly frequent positive parental consanguinity among cases with significantly frequent generalized onset seizures (94%) than simple partial seizure (6%). MEDICA16 in vivo There were significantly lower serum GAP-43 and zinc levels with significantly higher TAC among cases vs. the controls, p˂0.05 for all. There was no significant difference in the serum levels of NT-3 among epileptic children vs. the controls, p = 0.269. Serum Zn was positively correlated with GAP-43 level among epileptic children (r = 0.381, p = 0.006). Serum GAP-43 in diagnosing childhood epilepsy at cut-off point ≤ 0.6ng/mL showed 78% sensitivity, 62% specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) = 50.6%, negative predictive value (NPP) = 84.9% with AUC = 0.574.

GAP-43 can be considered a sensitive good negative biomarker in childhood epilepsy which correlated positively with the zinc status.
