hage-like cells), supporting that stents are biocompatible and can be explored for future clinical applications.Estimation of sex from bone remnants after medicolegal issues or mass disasters constitute a challenge. Our objective was to investigate if morphometric measurements performed on computed tomography (CT) images of the calcaneus can be useful for sex estimation. The measurements were performed on CT images of calcaneus bones of 489 patients (203 women, 286 men). The parameters under investigation were maximum length (MAXL), load arm length (LAL), minimum breadth (MINB), body height (BH), maximum height (MAXH), dorsal articular facet length (DAFL), dorsal articular facet breadth (DAFB), and cuboidal facet height (CFH). All parameters were remarkably increased in men compared to women (p less then 0.001, for all). The highest performances for sex estimation were displayed by DAFL (92.8%) and BH (92.6%). The concomitant use of variables MAXL, BH, CFH, and DAFL revealed accuracy as high as 96% for gender discrimination. We suggest that morphometric measurements performed on CT images of the calcaneus can provide useful data for the estimation of sex.Alzheimer's disease is a common neurodegenerative disease in the elderly population and a leading cause of dementia. Genetics and environmental risk factors were considered to play a major role in the onset of the disease. This study aimed to examine the correlation between different metals levels and the gene expression in Alzheimer's patients with age-matched control subjects. Non- essential metals were measured in the whole blood due to its higher concentration in red blood corpuscles (RBCs) and essential biometals in the serum samples of Alzheimer's disease (AD) by using Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) that allows the analysis and detection of the different elements at low levels. Gene expression level was performed by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). In this study, the levels of Lead and Arsenic metals were not detected in the AD patient samples. Cadmium, Mercury, and Aluminum were found higher in cases as compared to controls with 0.009240 ± 0.0007707 (P = less then 0.0001), 0.02332 ± 0.001041 (P = less then 0.0001), and 0.09222 ± 0.02804 (P = 0.0087) respectively. Essential biometal like copper was higher 0.1274 ± 0.02453 (P = 0.0254) in cases, while iron 0.1117 ± 0.009599 (P = 0.0304) and zinc 0.03800 ± 0.003462 mg/L were found significantly lower as compared to controls. All targeted genes such as APP, PSEN1, PSEN2, and APOE4 were found up-regulated in AD patients. We concluded that there was no significant correlation between metals dyshomeostasis and gene expressions in this study.Cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) is known to increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, consequences of oxidative stress (OS), and neuronal death in the susceptible brain areas including the cerebellum. Newly, remarkable attention has been paid to a natural diet with the capability to scavenge ROS. Withania coagulans root extract (WCE) is rich in components with antioxidants properties. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of WCE on cerebellar Purkinje cells (PCs) against OS-mediated apoptosis after I/R injury. In this experimental study 64 male adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 16) as follows control, sham, I/R, and WCE 1000 + I/R. I/R animals were pretreated with daily administration of hydro-alcoholic WCE (1000 mg/kg) or distilled water as a vehicle for 30 days before I/R injury. After 72 h, the animals were sacrificed, the cerebellum tissue was removed and used for biochemical (CAT, SOD, GPx, and MDA levels) and histopathological (Nissl and TUNEL staining) assays. Findings showed that the MDA level and the number of apoptotic neurons significantly increased and viable Purkinje neurons decreased in I/R injury (p less then 0.05). Administration of 1000 mg/kg WCE reduced MDA level and enhanced antioxidants activity including CAT, SOD, and GPx significantly. In addition, intact surviving PCs increased. At the same time, TUNEL-positive neurons decreased significantly in the WCE pre-treated group (p less then 0.05). These findings suggest that WCE can counteract cerebral I/R-induced OS and associated neuronal death by enhancement of ROS scavenging and antioxidant capacity. It appears that pre-treatment with 1000 mg/kg WCE for thirty days can protect PCs against OS-mediated apoptosis after I/R injury.Single-anastomosis duodenal switch (SADS) has become increasingly popular. This review compared the conceptual difference between Eastern (SADS-E) and Western (SADS-W) countries. After searching for SADS through PubMed and high-impact journals, 19 articles with 2280 patients were included for analysis. We found SADS-W was reserved for patients with a high body mass index (BMI) without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Surgeons performing SADS-W used larger bougies and preferred shorter common channels. However, SADS-E was mainly preferred in T2DM patients with a low BMI. SADS-E bypassed less bowel and used smaller bougies. Avexitide solubility dmso The spectra of major postoperative complications, nutritional deficiencies, and gastrointestinal disorders were different between SADS-E and SADS-W. SADS-W yielded better weight loss and better T2DM remission than SADS-E. SADS are effective bariatric and metabolic procedures with promising therapeutic outcomes and acceptable safety.
The General Medical Council (GMC) and Irish Medical Council (IMC) recommend the presence of a chaperone for all intimate examinations and that it should be clearly documented. The aim of this report is to assess doctors' compliance with obtaining a chaperone and documenting their presence, determining possible causes of non-compliance and implement interventions to increase compliance.
Prospective audit of patients seen in the breast clinic in Beaumont hospital over the week starting 8th February 2021. The medical charts were reviewed for documentation of chaperone presence. Doctors were surveyed using (SurveyMonkey) for causes of non-compliance. Interventions included a stamp in the medical notes for chaperone presence and details, an educational email with GMC and IMC guidelines, and posters put up in clinic rooms. The intervention was reassessed at 1-week and 6-week intervals.
In the assessment phase, 126 patients were recruited. A chaperone was present 100% of the time where a male doctor examined a female patient; however, chaperone presence was not documented in any of the medical charts (0/126).
