Even DIY beginners can easily alter their locks. To start, gather the required materials.
Take off the lock that was previously used.
Removing the lock that was previously installed from the door is an essential step prior to installing the new one. This is crucial if you suspect someone else may have a key to the home. It is also a good idea if you have moved into a new house that was burglarized, or had a roommate move in. The process is a lot simpler than you imagine and can be completed within a few minutes.
Begin by taking off the screws that secure the deadbolt faceplate onto the door frame. To remove the faceplate, you'll have to remove screws from both sides. This will allow you to discover what's behind it, and will provide you with a better understanding of how to proceed with the remaining steps.
Once you have removed your old faceplate, you will have to take off the bolt and strike plate. Remove the bolt from the door hole by using the screwdriver. If the bolt is rusty, you might need to use a chisel smash it out. If you're using a chisel, you must be careful not to damage the door frame.
Make sure the new doorknob, deadbolt and lock will fit in the holes that are already present in the door before you remove the old one. Many hardware stores and large box stores stock a range of locks and can help you choose the right one. If the lock you purchased doesn't match your door, send it back and ask for help.
When you're removing the old lock, look for small slits or depressions in the handle or around the trim. If you can locate them, insert a straightened safety pin or flat screwdriver through them to release the handle and expose the screws beneath.
Once the screw inside the handle has been removed, you can begin to remove the knob from its spindle. To do this, locate the set screw at the base of the knob and loosen it. Next, you will need to remove the knob from the spindle. Finally, carefully remove the spindle from the door.
Install the new lock
It is a good idea to change the locks on your doors periodically, especially if you have had a break-in. It's an inexpensive, simple and efficient way to ensure that your home is secure. The majority of people can do it by themselves using a screwdriver, a screwdriver, and some basic directions. You might also want to learn how you can change the lock's key to ensure that only you have the key.
To begin the process, you'll have to purchase a new lock that is compatible with your existing lock's keyway. Most locksmiths will replace your lock at a cost however, you can save money by doing this yourself. You can buy a new lock from an hardware store or online. A standard deadbolt should be able to fit on doors of all sizes however, you'll need to measure the space on your door to make sure that it will fit.
Most of the time, your new lock will include the cardboard template that will show the way it will fit on the door. The template can be used to drill the hole. It is much easier than having to measure every time. If the template doesn't line to the hole you intend to drill then you should return it to the hardware store and purchase another one.
It is essential to install the new lock on the right side of the door. You can confirm this by checking the latch, which should be labeled "up" or something similar. Make sure that the latch is seated correctly in the plate and fix it using the supplied screws.
If you are replacing the knob lock on your door it is also essential to be aware of the way it's operated. Certain knob locks are right-handed. If you're not careful, you could place the knob on the wrong side of the door, which will make it impossible to lock it from either the inside or the outside.
After you're done, you should test the new lock to make sure it's working. You should be capable of locking the door from both the inside as well as the outside, as well as unlock it using keys. If you're not satisfied with the results, you can always call an expert locksmith to repair it.
Test the lock
A door lock that will not open is a nuisance but it can also put the safety of your family at risk. It's simple to solve the majority of door lock problems by conducting some troubleshooting and lubrication. Verify that the key has been properly cut, and that the lock assembly is not dirty or loose. If this does not solve the problem, try lubricating your door lock actuator using graphite powdered.
Check that the doorlock switch, wiring harnesses and actuator connector all work correctly. Consult the wiring diagram or manual to determine the color code and the function of the wires for each door lock switch. Then, use a test light or digital meter to see if the door lock actuator is receiving power and ground when the switches are turned on. If you observe a voltage toggle with each switch's activation, it means the switches are working and it's most likely the actuator that needs to be replaced.
If the switch seems to work, but the actuator doesn't move when you turn the knob, it could be a problem with the actuator cylinder itself. The actuator cylinder is equipped with pins that have a spring-loaded. They prevent the cylinder from moving until the key is inserted which then pushes them up to the same height as the key at that location. The cylinder then begins to rotate opening the lock body, allowing the latch to open for the handle.
If the door lock actuator is faulty, you can remove the switch and wires from the actuator by using small screwdrivers to loosen the locking bolt and separate the plastic cover that houses the electrical connector. After that, disconnect the door lock actuator and let it fall. Then you should be able to find and take off the two bolts of 10mm which hold the actuator in place. Once the actuator is removed, you will be capable of disconnecting the black electrical connector and pull it out along with the lock and actuator assembly.
Replace the key
If your deadbolt is locked or door knob isn't functioning, you'll have to reset it or replace it. This isn't difficult and can save you money. But, before doing this it is an excellent idea to have a locksmith examine the locks and check them for any issues. This will give you peace of mind that your home is safe and safe.
Remove the exterior faceplate of the doorknob/deadbolt. There may be replace window lock that are holding it in place, then use a screwdriver loosen them and then pull the faceplate off. Then, you can remove the inside faceplate using a screwdriver that has a flat head. After you have removed the faceplate, you can remove the bolt and screw from the lock cylinder.
A locksmith can help you determine if the lock you have needs to be replaced or rekeyed. They can also provide advice about the best security options for your home. They can also make any necessary adjustments to the door or frame to ensure a perfect fit. They also provide an assurance on their work.
You will need to purchase a brand new lock key before you are able to rekey it. It is essential to select the right key in the lock. A key that's not the right size can damage the internal mechanism of the lock and hinder it from functioning. To determine the size of a key, insert it into the lock. If it is flush with the plug, it's of the correct size. If the pins extend from the top of the plug the plug, then they're too long.
You may need to change your door lock for a variety of reasons, such as:
If you're moving into an homeowner's house or have lost your keys, rekeying the lock could be a more affordable option than replacing it. It can also be more cost-effective than a complete replacement. However, there are instances where rekeying an existing lock isn't an option. If the lock has been damaged or jammed repeatedly, for example it could be time to replace it.
