Metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) play a major role in the resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to carbapenems. We investigated the antibiotic susceptibility patterns and frequency of MBLs genes (bla
and bla
) in carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa clinical isolates in Sari, Iran.

The isolates were identified using standard microbiological tests, and their antibiotic susceptibility pattern was determined by the disk agar diffusion method according CLSI criteria. Phenotypic identification of MBL-producing strains assessed by the combined disk test (CDT). Then, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect the presence of bla
and bla
genes.

The highest and lowest levels of antibiotic resistance were observed against gentamicin (40%) and piperacillin-tazobactam (13%), respectively. Besides, 40 isolates (40%) had the multi-drug resistant (MDR) phenotype, while 5 (12.5%) MDR isolates were resistant to all antibiotics tested. The results of the CDT showed that among 43 carbapenem non-susceptible clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa, 33 (76.74%) isolates were MBL-producing strains. Also, the frequency of the bla
gene among 43 carbapenem non susceptible isolates was determined to be 6.97%, while none of these isolates carried the bla
gene.

Due to the high prevalence of carbapenem-resistant and MDR P. aeruginosa in this study, routine antibiotic susceptibility testing and phenotypic identification of carbapenemase production by this bacterium are necessary for the proper selection of antibiotics.

Onychomycosis, also called tinea unguium, is a common fungal infection affecting the nails. After dermatophytes, Candida species are recognized as second-line pathogens responsible for this infection. The treatment of onychomycosis requires a long time and is associated with high rates of recurrence. Antifungal medicines conjugated with gold (Au-NP) nanoparticle are the possible platforms for the reduction of drug resistance.

In the present study, we reported the in-vitro antifungal activity of itraconazole (ITZ) - Au conjugates, time-kill studies, and biofilm-producing ability of six ITZ-resistant C. glabrata.

3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-Diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) quantitative results revealed that four out of six resistant isolates studied able to form biofilms in vitro. ITZ-Au conjugates were more effective than ITZ or Au nanoparticle alone, and the time-kill tests pointed to the suitable effect of ITZ-Au conjugate.

The present study concluded that ITZ-Au conjugates have an inhibitory effect on the biofilm of resistant C. glabrata isolates. Further studies are needed to compare the ex-vivo onychomycosis model.

Dermatological disorders are cutaneous infirmities which are frequently occurring and increasing at an alarming rate. These range from mild itching/redness (dermatitis) to fatal skin cancers and has posed a major health concern. Azadirachta indica A. Juss (commonly known as neem), a member of Meliaceae family, is an Indian medicinal plant which has been known for its health promoting effects since ancient times.

The review highlights the traditional practices, pharmacological aspects, and formulatory approach of neem for the treatment of dermatological disorders. Further, recent patents and novel delivery systems (developed and in pipeline) improving skin delivery and therapeutic profile of neem are discussed.

Neem is a traditional medicinal plant that has been employed for the prevention and treatment of numerous ailments covering systemic and topical disorders. Scientific studies have validated the traditional claims of neem and attributed these health benefits to the presence of more than 300 structueutical tailoring of neem by implication of novel carriers could enhance its penetrability across skin.Mechanism of cardiac injury in COVID-19 is a serious problem and plays critical role in mediating the severity of the disease. However, the mechanistic insights of the induction of the inflammatory signal leading to cardiac injury was poorly understood. However, few recent studies have indicated the involvement of Toll-Like Receptors (TLRs) as the major 'culprit' behind eliciting the initial signal of 'cytokine storm'. As a result, TLRs are now considered as the therapeutic targets to develop efficacious therapeutics. Herein, we present an overall summary on the mechanistic insight of cardiac injury in COVID-19 patients and the therapeutic promises of TLR-targeted therapies.Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) mainly affecting the colon and the rectum. Its main characters are represented by relapsing and remitting mucosal inflammation, starting in the rectum and typically extending continuously proximally through part or the entire colon. UC pathogenesis depends on multiple factors, such as genetic predisposition, defects in the epithelial barrier, dysregulated immune responses, and environmental causes. The most frequent symptoms are abdominal pain, weight loss, mucus discharge, bloody diarrhoea, incontinence, nocturnal defecations, fever, and anemia. Existing therapies for UC include 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and its derivatives, steroids, immunosuppressants and biological drugs. However, limited efficacy and unwanted adverse effects hardly limit these strategies of treatment. In the last decades, research studies have been driven towards complementary and alternative medicines for the treatment of UC. Various nutraceuticals have exhibited promising results in modulating intestinal inflammation meanwhile improving symptoms. These compounds possess a wide spectrum of positive health effects evidenced by in vitro studies, characterized by their involvement in antioxidant defenses, cell proliferation, and gene expression. The present review analyzes the available data about the different types of nutraceuticals and their potential effectiveness as adjuvant therapy of IBD, with particular emphasis to UC.Liver toxicity of quantum dots varies with size, concentration, and other structural as well as experimental parameters. For modeling hepatotoxicity, the eclectic data associated with cadmium containing quantum dots have been used in the creation of quasiSMILES for their representation. The core diameter is normalized for wider applicability and the index of the ideality of correlation is applied to construct the better quantitative features toxicity relationship models. Total eight splits are created and the best model is obtained through split 1 with better prediction criteria of validation set objects. The values of all statistical criteria used in the quality determination of a QSAR model are within the specified range for all the eight toxicity models developed here. Factors like TGA ligand and 0.6-0.7 nm diameter are favorable for liver toxicity while L-cysteine ligand and 0.5-0.6 nm core diameter are helpful in the reduction of toxicity. Further, the intelligent consensus modeling process forms a total of 40 individual and 20 consensus models and the best individual and consensus models are 'Good' in MAE-based criteria. AZD9291 in vivo The consensus modeling enhances the prediction ability as well as the accuracy of the developed models and increases the applicability space of the built models for hepatotoxicity prediction of quantum dots.A new series of benzoxazole derivatives were designed and synthesised to have the main essential pharmacophoric features of VEGFR-2 inhibitors. Cytotoxic activities were evaluated for all derivatives against two human cancer cell lines, MCF-7 and HepG2. Also, the effect of the most cytotoxic derivatives on VEGFR-2 protein concentration was assessed by ELISA. Compounds 14o, 14l, and 14b showed the highest activities with VEGFR-2 protein concentrations of 586.3, 636.2, and 705.7 pg/ml, respectively. Additionally, the anti-angiogenic property of compound 14b against human umbilical vascular endothelial cell (HUVEC) was performed using a wound healing migration assay. Compound 14b reduced proliferation and migratory potential of HUVEC cells. Furthermore, compound 14b was subjected to further biological investigations including cell cycle and apoptosis analyses. Compound 14b arrested the HepG2 cell growth at the Pre-G1 phase and induced apoptosis by 16.52%, compared to 0.67% in the control (HepG2) cells. The effect of apoptosis was buttressed by a 4.8-fold increase in caspase-3 level compared to the control cells. Besides, different in silico docking studies were also performed to get better insights into the possible binding mode of the target compounds with VEGFR-2 active sites. This study takes off from the ethical problem that racism grounded in population genetics raises. It is an analysis of four standard scientific responses to the problem of genetically motivated racism, seen in connection with the Human Genome Diversity Project (HGDP) (1) Discriminatory uses of scientific facts and arguments are in principle 'misuses' of scientific data that the researcher cannot be further responsible for. (2) In a strict scientific sense, genomic facts 'disclaim racism', which means that an epistemically correct grasp of genomics should be ethically justified. (3) Ethical difficulties are issues to be 'resolved' by an ethics institution or committee, which will guarantee the ethical quality of the research scrutinized. (4) Although population genetics occasionally may lead to racism, its overall 'value' for humankind justifies its cause as a desirable pursuit. I argue that these typical responses to genetically motivated racism supervene on a principle called the 'ethic of knowledge', which implies that an epistemically correct account has intrinsic ethical value. This principle, and its logically related ideas concerning the ethic of science, effectively avoids a deeper ethical question of responsibility in science from being raised. This study explored the frequency, recency, content, severity, and targets of aggressive scripts reported by 94 incarcerated Australian males. The scripts of participants who reported a history of repeated and severe aggression were compared with the scripts of participants who reported a history of less severe and less frequent aggression. As hypothesized, participants with a history of more frequent and severe aggressive behavior reported more severe aggressive script content and more frequent script rehearsal. Furthermore, participants with a history of more frequent and severe aggressive behavior reported feelings of anticipation and excitement when they rehearsed aggressive scripts as well as an increase in the severity of aggressive scripts rehearsed over time. These results have important implications for risk assessment and treatment of violent offenders. To explore the difficulties parents face when understanding their children's reactions to parental cancer and parents' reactions to their children's perceived needs.Qualitative interviews with cancer patients and their partners.Eleven patients and seven partners took part. Their children were aged 1-15 years. Eight patients were mothers and cancer was diagnosed median 28 (7-104) months ago.Inductive analysis with systematic text condensation.Parents were groping in the dark when understanding their children's reactions. They observed signs of distress in their children, but often avoided communication about emotional reactions. We suggest parental difficulties in containing own and children's emotions as an important cause for this situation.Parents lacked relevant support offers for the family as a unit. Identification of children's difficulties cannot be based on parental evaluation alone. We suggest family support as part of standard care for patients with minor children.
