Respond to SEMA members and Association staff requests for vehicle product data and information. In this paper, we tackle the problem of formalizing product qualities in the requirements of product-centred applications. Famed auto designer and racer Pete Brock (he designed the Shelby Daytona coupe) recently developed Orca, a very sleek, lightweight trailer with superior aerodynamic qualities. With the demise of the convertible, the sporty Z24 now came only in coupe form. GM merely redrew its organizational chart to enter the '90s with the highest overhead and lowest per-unit profit of the Big Three (not to mention the Japanese "transplant" operations that now loomed large in the total U.S. As a result, the company downscaled production costs just enough to attract a large consumer base. As a result, most reviewers found little lacking in the handling department, especially when optioned with firm damping and 17-inch wheel/tire package. But the most exciting upgrade was underhood, where Cadillac found room for the 5.7-liter (346-cid) LS6 V-8 from the contemporary C5-generation Corvette Z06. SS Camaros offered Chevelle's new 402/396-cid V-8, but the racy Z-28 moved to a 360-bhp solid-lifter 350 borrowed from the Corvette. All offered standard GM OnStar service and front side airbags, plus newly available rear torso side airbags.

Cadillacs had usually offered good speed, but only in a straight line. It's also a good thing that gas prices were lower back then; the vehicle got a whopping 8.3 mpg. Boosting its newly bored 265.4-cid engine was a Graham-built centrifugal blower that helped deliver 135 bhp -- good for lively midrange urge and 90 mph all-out. Car and Driver's test XLR-V did 0-60 in just 4.7 seconds and a standing quarter-mile of 13 seconds at 110 mph -- a noticeable improvement on the unblown version. Car Life's four-speed four-barrel with 3.08 gears and air conditioning ran a 15.4 quarter at 92 mph and got 12.4 mpg. Except for an early two-wheel-drive version with a 5.3-liter V-8, all Escalades through 2006 carried a 6.0-liter pushrod V-8 with 345 bhp, delivered through a four-speed automatic transmission to an all-wheel-drive system without low-range gearing. The three-speed automatic added a lock-up torque converter to aid highway mileage. Accordingly, the line was replaced for '62 by a "Monterey 6," and the name moved to Mercury's version of the new intermediate Ford Fairlane. That name doubled as the label for the new car's entry-level models, while sportier versions proudly wore the Nova badge. Advertising was quick to play on the car's wide appeal by sketching stories of fictional wallflowers transformed into swingers once they owned a Mustang.

But appeal it had: a shiny big bruiser with a street-tough attitude and interior glamour fit for a music video. No one was more surprised by Escalade's strong youth appeal than Cadillac itself. Because instrument panels are among the costliest components for a carmaker to change, the brand-new '87 dashboard implied the foxy Mustang might hang on for more than a few years (as indeed it would). Among the few options were power sunroof, navigation system, and rear-seat DVD entertainment. A Spanish subsidiary of Piaggio, Derbi started as a bicycle company in 1922 before moving to scooters a few decades later. That's because motors are typically rated for how much power they need to keep going once they've been started and have reached operating speed. In other words, for a big sedan that weighs about 4,000 pounds (1,814 kilograms), it's expected to have sports-car speed. Sure, a family sedan is never going to have the looks of a sports car such as a Ferrari, but that doesn't mean the designers don't try to pack every ounce of beauty and looks into the practicality of it all. D'Elegance was retitled DHS (for "DeVille High-luxury Sedan"), while Concours became the DTS ("DeVille Touring Sedan").

The sharp-edged styling was unlike anything else around, so it took a while to catch on with the public (and even some GM bigwigs). One of the most significant car launches in history took place in April 1964 at the New York World's Fair. This car was also one of Elvis' favorite vehicles, so catching one of his flicks at the drive-in with this car is both poetic and perfect. The car features two full-sized, individual rear seats and plenty of leg and headroom in the back. Add to this an aerodynamic style that cut through the air, and this car made the most of what it had under the hood. Learn more about this daring style development -- and about the CTS -- next. Actually, even the base CTS suspension might have been a bit too Teutonic for some buyers, as the 2004 settings were softened a bit to enhance ride comfort. The 3.2 was dropped for '05, but Cadillac wooed value-seekers that year by adding a lower-priced CTS with a 210-bhp 2.8-liter derivative of the 3.6 engine.
