The CRISPR/Cas9 system is now commonly employed for genome editing in various plants such as Arabidopsis, rice, and tobacco. In general, in genome editing of the Arabidopsis genome, the SpCas9 and guide RNA genes are introduced into the genome by the floral dip method. Mutations induced in the target sequence by SpCas9 are confirmed after selecting transformants by screening the T1 seed population. The advantage of this method is that genome-edited plants can be isolated easily. However, mutation efficiency in Arabidopsis using SpCas9 is not as high as that achieved in rice and tobacco, which are subjected to a tissue culture step. In this study, we compared four promoters and found that the parsley UBIQITIN promoter is highly active in Arabidopsis meristem tissue. Furthermore, we examined whether a simple heat treatment could improve mutation efficiency in Arabidopsis. Just one heat treatment at 37 °C for 24 hours increased the mutation efficiency at all four target sites from 3% to 42%, 43% to 62%, 54% to 75%, and 89 to 91%, respectively, without detectable off-target mutations. We recommend heat treatment of plate-grown plants at 37 °C for 24 hours as a simple method to increase the efficiency of CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutagenesis in Arabidopsis.The Philadelphia Beverage Tax was implemented on January 1, 2017 for some sugar- and artificially-sweetened beverages. Few qualitative studies have assessed retailers' reactions to beverage taxes. We aimed to understand food retailers' knowledge and attitudes about the Philadelphia beverage tax and how they responded to it with the goal of informing the framing and implementation of beverage taxes in other interested jurisdictions. Researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with retailers within Philadelphia before (n = 15) and after (n = 11) the Philadelphia Beverage Tax was implemented. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit participants with different store locations and customer base characteristics. A priori codes based on the interview guide were used to organize data, and analytic memos were developed and reviewed to identify themes that emerged within the data using a grounded theory approach. Five themes emerged (a) concerns about the tax purpose, amount, and use of revenue; (b) concerns about the tax's impact on finances and business operations; (c) business strategies implemented to lessen financial burden of the tax; (d) perceptions of customer responses to the tax based on income; and (e) confusion around tax implementation. Results highlighted ways to improve implementation. Retailers in Philadelphia implemented various strategies to offset negative effects on taxed beverage sales. Cities implementing a beverage tax would benefit from investment in educational outreach and support to business owners prior to tax implementation and ensure transparency in how tax revenue will be spent.Models of reading emphasize that visual (orthographic) processing provides input to phonological as well as lexical-semantic processing. Neurobiological models of reading have mapped these processes to distributed regions across occipital-temporal, temporal-parietal, and frontal cortices. However, the role of the precentral gyrus in these models is ambiguous. Articulatory phonemic representations in the precentral gyrus are obviously involved in reading aloud, but it is unclear if the precentral gyrus is recruited during reading silently in a time window consistent with participation in phonological processing contributions. Here, we recorded intracranial electrophysiology during a speeded semantic decision task from 24 patients to map the spatio-temporal flow of information across the cortex during silent reading. Patients selected animate nouns from a stream of nonanimate words, letter strings, and false-font stimuli. We characterized the distribution and timing of evoked high-gamma power (70-170 Hz) as well as phase-locking between electrodes. The precentral gyrus showed a proportion of electrodes responsive to linguistic stimuli (27%) that was at least as high as those of surrounding peri-sylvian regions. These precentral gyrus electrodes had significantly greater high-gamma power for words compared to both false-font and letter-string stimuli. In a patient with word-selective effects in the fusiform, superior temporal, and precentral gyri, there was significant phase-locking between the fusiform and precentral gyri starting at ∼180 msec and between the precentral and superior temporal gyri starting at ∼220 msec. Finally, our large patient cohort allowed exploratory analyses of the spatio-temporal reading network underlying silent reading. The distribution, timing, and connectivity results place the precentral gyrus as an important hub in the silent reading network.Communicating risk and other health information in a clear, understandable, and actionable manner is critical for the prevention and control of cancer, as well as the care of affected individuals and their family members. However, the swift pace of development in communication technologies has dramatically changed the health communication landscape. This digital era presents new opportunities and challenges for cancer communication research and its impact on practice and policy. In this article, we examine the science of health communication focused on cancer and highlight important areas of research for the coming decade. Specifically, we discuss three domains in which cancer communication may occur (a) among patients and their healthcare providers; (b) within and among families and social networks; and (c) across communities, populations, and the public more broadly. We underscore findings from the prior decade of cancer communication research, provide illustrative examples of future directions for cancer communication science, and conclude with considerations for diverse populations. Health informatics studies will be necessary to fully understand the growing and complex communication settings related to cancer such works have the potential to change the face of information exchanges about cancer and elevate our collective discourse about this area as newer clinical and public health priorities emerge. B102 Yet, the neural codes for spatial and temporal information remain unclear, particularly the involvement of neural oscillations in maintaining such codes. To address these issues, we designed an immersive virtual reality environment containing teleporters that displace participants to a different location after entry. Upon exiting the teleporters, participants made judgments from two given options regarding either the distance they had traveled (spatial distance condition) or the duration they had spent inside the teleporters (temporal duration condition). We wirelessly recorded scalp EEG while participants navigated in the virtual environment by physically walking on an omnidirectional treadmill and traveling through teleporters. An exploratory analysis revealed significantly higher alpha and beta power for short-distance versus long-distance traversals, whereas the contrast also revealed significantly higher frontal midline delta-theta-alpha power and global beta power increases for short versus long temporal duration teleportation. Analyses of occipital alpha instantaneous frequencies revealed their sensitivity for both spatial distances and temporal durations, suggesting a novel and common mechanism for both spatial and temporal coding. We further examined the resolution of distance and temporal coding by classifying discretized distance bins and 250-msec time bins based on multivariate patterns of 2- to 30-Hz power spectra, finding evidence that oscillations code fine-scale time and distance information. Together, these findings support partially independent coding schemes for spatial and temporal information, suggesting that low-frequency oscillations play important roles in coding both space and time.
Low birth weight (LBW) remains a global concern for childhood morbidity and mortality. This study examined the socioeconomic factors associated with LBW among Bangladeshi newborns and drew a district-level prevalence map.
Data were extracted from the 2019 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey for Bangladesh. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify the predictors of LBW.
The prevalence of LBW among Bangladeshi newborns was found to be 14.5%. Overall, the Eastern and South-Eastern regions had a higher burden of LBW. Mothers' educational status, mode of delivery, wealth index quintile of the household and area were identified as independent predictors of newborns' LBW. Mothers who completed primary and secondary education grades had a 1.6- and 1.3-fold higher possibility of having an LBW baby compared with those who completed higher secondary or higher educational grades (adjusted OR=1.62 and 1.32, 95% CI 1.21 to 2.18 and 1.06 to 1.65, respectively). Children belonging to the poorest households and residing in urban areas had a 1.4-fold higher likelihood of being LBW (p<0.05).
This study indicates that LBW is still highly prevalent in Bangladesh. Immediate public health action is required in the highly prevalent regions identified in this study.

Immediate public health action is required in the highly prevalent regions identified in this study.In light of extended stay-at-home periods during the COVID-19 pandemic, recent societal trends have revealed an increased use of online media to remain connected. Simultaneously, interests in at-home cooking and baking, particularly of 'comfort foods' have increased. Since flour is a crucial component in many of these products, we analyze how the U.S. public, in social and online media space, references "flour" and its use. We also quantify the share of media mentions about flour that are devoted to flour-related food safety risks and/or risk mitigation. It was found that the volume of mentions about flour and its use fluctuate seasonally, often increasing ahead of the winter holiday season (November-December time period). Further, the volume of interest rapidly increased in March 2020 when stay-at-home orders were issued. The share of media devoted to flour-related food safety risks or associated illness were extremely small but generally corresponded with flour recall announcements or other public risk communications. Overall, the interest in flour and its use remains seasonal and predictably related to societal trends, such as increased baking at home during the holidays or 2020 stay-at-home orders. However, awareness of flour-related food safety risks seems largely absent based on online media data collection and analysis, except in immediate reactions to flour recalls. This study suggests that more flour safety education program may be desired to support consumers' informed decision-making.
