The Swedish Public Health Agency recommends that preterm infants as well as children who are admitted for other reasons in the neonatal ward be vaccinated with dose 1 against rotavirus infection when hospitalised and when age eligible.
To evaluate whether the cumulative effect of an individual-level intervention followed by a building-level intervention, both based on Fishbein's Integrated Model of Behavior Change, has a better effect on oral hygiene clinical outcomes than the sequence of the building-level intervention followed by the individual-level intervention; to determine the added effect of each intervention on the other; to identify the psychosocial mechanisms that might explain the differences.
Six low-income senior housing complexes were enrolled in the study, and participants were recruited from these buildings. Buildings were randomly assigned to receive either the individual counselling intervention first followed by the building-level intervention, or the building-level intervention first followed by the individual intervention. Participants were assessed for gingival inflammation using the gingival index (GI) and plaque scores (PS) at T0, prior to the interventions, T1, about one month after each intervention and T2, aboT2. Several cognitive/behavioural variables significantly affected improvements in GI and PS.
Both interventions were successful in improving GI and PS. The building-level intervention did not provide much additional benefit when it followed the individual intervention although it may have had a sustaining effect. The findings on the cognitive/emotional/behavioural variables support the importance of these factors and should be considered when implementing oral hygiene interventions.

Some comorbidities are associated with worse prognosis and left ventricular assist device (LVAD) recipients are probably part of this high-risk population. We report a 31-year-old male patient who developed COVID-19 during LVAD implantation. His postoperative period was complicated by severe pneumonia and mechanical ventilation (MV) leading to right ventricular failure (RVF) and inotrope necessity. He experienced multiple complications, but eventually recovered. We present a systematic review of LVAD recipients and COVID-19. Among 14 patients, the mean age was 62.7 years, 78.5% were male. A total of 5 patients (35.7%) required MV and 3 patients (21.4%) died. A total of 2 patients (14.2%) had thromboembolic events. This case and systematic review suggest LVAD recipients are at particular risk of unfavorable outcomes and they may be more susceptible to RVF in the setting of COVID-19, particularly during perioperative period.
The analgesia management of thoracic surgery can be challenging and debate exists regarding the efficacy of pre-emptive analgesia and its relationship with postoperative pain. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between intraoperative nociception and postoperative pain in dogs undergoing thoracic surgery. If proven, effective prevention of intraoperative nociception could imply prospective lower postoperative analgesia requirements.
The study was retrospective and observational. Clinical records from dogs undergoing thoracic surgery (2015-2019) were reviewed and cases were allocated to one of two groups NOCI-FREE - dogs with no evidence of intraoperative nociception; NOCI - dogs that required intraoperative rescue analgesia to address a nociceptive response. Pre-anaesthetic medication, locoregional analgesia, intraoperative infusions and rescue analgesia were used. Additionally, postoperative pain scores and analgesia plans were registered and compared between groups.
Our study failed to identify a difference in the postoperative pain scores and analgesia requirements between dogs having signs of intraoperative nociception and those without. Additionally, the use of postoperative analgesic preventive infusions and rescue analgesia was similar for both NOCI and NOCI-FREE. selleck chemical Being on an intraoperative infusion of opioids, dexmedetomidine or lidocaine was identified as a protective factor for nociception [OR=11; (4.15-29.7)].
In the population studied, it appears that dogs showing signs of nociception intraoperatively do not necessarily show higher pain scores nor do they need additionally pain relief in the postoperative period.

To investigate the genetic etiology of skeletal dysplasia in highly selected fetuses during the first and second trimesters using deep phenotyping and exome sequencing (ES).
Fetuses with short femurs were identified using the established prenatal diagnostic approach. A multidisciplinary team reviewed fetal phenotypic information (prenatal ultrasound findings, fetal postmortem, and radiographs) in a cohort of highly selected fetuses with skeletal dysplasia during the first and second trimesters. The affected families underwent multiplatform genetic tests.
Of the 27 affected fetuses, 21 (77.8%) had pathogenic or potential pathogenic variations in the following genes COL1A1, FGFR3, COL2A1, COL1A2, FLNB, DYNC2LI1, and TRIP11. Two fetuses had compound heterozygous mutations in DYNC2LI1 and TRIP11, respectively, and the other 19 carried de novo autosomal dominant variants. Novel variants were identified in COL1A1, COL2A1, COL1A2, DYNC2LI1, and TRIP11 in 11 fetuses. We also included the first description of the phenotype of odontochondrodysplasia in a prenatal setting.
ES or panel sequencing offers a high diagnostic yield for fetal skeletal dysplasia during the first and second trimesters. Comprehensive and complete phenotypic information is indispensable for genetic analysis and the expansion of genotype-phenotype correlations in fetal skeletal abnormalities.

Eye-dedicated proton therapy (PT) facilities are used to treat malignant intraocular lesions, especially uveal melanoma (UM). The first commercial ocular PT beamline from Varian was installed in the Netherlands. In this work, the conceptual design of the new eyeline is presented. In addition, a comprehensive comparison against five PT centers with dedicated ocular beamlines is performed, and the clinical impact of the identified differences is analyzed.
The HollandPTC eyeline was characterized. Four centers in Europe and one in the United States joined the study. All centers use a cyclotron for proton beam generation and an eye-dedicated nozzle. Differences among the chosen ocular beamlines were in the design of the nozzle, nominal energy, and energy spectrum. The following parameters were collected for all centers technical characteristics and a set of distal, proximal, and lateral region measurements. The measurements were performed with detectors available in-house at each institution. The institutionskely differences in ocular radiation-related toxicities. This interinstitutional comparison could support further research on ocular post-PT complications. Finally, the findings reported in this study could be used to define dosimetrical guidelines for ocular PT to unify the concepts among institutions.
HollandPTC eyeline specifications are in accordance with five other ocular PT beamlines. Similar clinical concepts can be applied to expect the same high local tumor control. Dosimetrical properties among the six institutions induce most likely differences in ocular radiation-related toxicities. This interinstitutional comparison could support further research on ocular post-PT complications. Finally, the findings reported in this study could be used to define dosimetrical guidelines for ocular PT to unify the concepts among institutions.
Although inactivation of the von Hippel-Lindau gene (VHL) on chromosome 3p25 is considered to be the major cause of hereditary endolymphatic sac tumours (ELSTs), the genetic background of sporadic ELST is largely unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of VHL mutations in sporadic ELSTs and compare their characteristics to VHL-disease-related tumours.
Genetic and epigenetic alterations were compared between 11 sporadic and 11 VHL-disease-related ELSTs by targeted sequencing and DNA methylation analysis.
VHL mutations and small deletions detected by targeted deep sequencing were identified in 9/11 sporadic ELSTs (82%). No other cancer-related genetic pathway was altered except for TERT promoter mutations in two sporadic ELST and one VHL-disease-related ELST (15%). Loss of heterozygosity of chromosome 3 was found in 6/10 (60%) VHL-disease-related and 10/11 (91%) sporadic ELSTs resulting in biallelic VHL inactivation in 8/10 (73%) sporadic ELSTs. DNA methylation profiling did not reveal differences between sporadic and VHL-disease-related ELSTs but reliably distinguished ELST from morphological mimics of the cerebellopontine angle. VHL patients were significantly younger at disease onset compared to sporadic ELSTs (29 vs. 52years, p<0.0001, Fisher's exact test). VHL-disease status was not associated with an increased risk of recurrence, but the presence of clear cells was found to be associated with shorter progression-free survival (p=0.0002, log-rank test).
Biallelic inactivation of VHL is the main mechanism underlying ELSTs, but unknown mechanisms beyond VHL may rarely be involved in the pathogenesis of sporadic ELSTs.

Due to this, numerous attempts have been made to improve some operational parameters of microalgae production. Despite this, specialized research in cell growth monitoring, considered as a fundamental parameter to achieve profitable applications of microalgae for biofuels production, presents some opportunity areas mainly related to the development of specific and accurate methodologies for growth monitoring. In this work, predictive models were developed through statistical tools that correlate a specific micro-algal absorbance with cell density measured by cell count (cells∙per ml), for three species of interest for biofuels production. The results allow the precise prediction of cell density through a logistic model based on spectrophotometry, valid for all the kinetics analysed. The adjusted determination coefficients ( r adj 2 ) for the developed models were 0·993, 0·995 and 0·994 for Dunaliella tertiolecta, Nannochloropsis oculata and Chaetoceros muelleri respectively.
