The discovery of the spin Hall effect1 enabled the efficient generation and manipulation of the spin current. More recently, the magnetic spin Hall effect2,3 was observed in non-collinear antiferromagnets, where the spin conservation is broken due to the non-collinear spin configuration. This provides a unique opportunity to control the spin current and relevant device performance with controllable magnetization. Here, we report a magnetic spin Hall effect in a collinear antiferromagnet, Mn2Au. The spin currents are generated at two spin sublattices with broken spatial symmetry, and the antiparallel antiferromagnetic moments play an important role. Therefore, we term this effect the 'antiferromagnetic spin Hall effect'. The out-of-plane spins from the antiferromagnetic spin Hall effect are favourable for the efficient switching of perpendicular magnetized devices, which is required for high-density applications. The antiferromagnetic spin Hall effect adds another twist to the atomic-level control of spin currents via the antiferromagnetic spin structure.The aims were to compare ewe-lamb behaviours between primiparous (PRI) and multiparous (MUL) undernourished grazing ewes at birth and at 3 months of age, and to determine if mothers' parity affects milk yield and composition, and lambs' body weight (BW). Food availability restricted the nutritional requirements from day 30 to day 143 of gestation. The MUL ewes had greater BW than the PRI during gestation, and their lambs tended to vocalize less frequently until their first suckle. PRI ewes both displayed a lower frequency of acceptance behaviours and, a greater number of high-pitched bleats toward the alien lamb than toward that of their own, but MUL did not. PRI ewes produced less milk than the MUL ewes. The heart rate was greater in lambs reared by MUL ewes than by PRI. Although PRI ewes had a lower BW during gestation, this difference was stable throughout and did not affect the establishment of the ewe-lamb bond neither at birth nor at 3 months postpartum. At least under nutritionally restricted conditions during gestation, inexperienced mothers appeared to have had a shorter sensitivity period of maternal responsiveness than that of experienced mothers.The nanocomposite of BiVO4-based material has been synthesized by one-step solvent method. The morphological, physical, chemical properties of the nanocomposite have been investigated. The results revealed that the surface area of BiVO4, BiVO4/SiO2 and BiVO4/SiO2/GO was 11.13, 28.47 and 43.93 m2/g, respectively. The structural test by XRD proved that the nanocomposites were monoclinic phase of bismuth vanadate. Adsorption and photocatalytic degradation were two main mechanisms that strongly related to pollutant removal efficiency (i.e., methylene blue and phenol). The BiVO4/SiO2/GO nanocomposite obtained the greatest MB removal efficiency due to its high adsorption ability from high surface area, whereas the photocatalytic degradation was insignificant mechanism. In contrast, the relatively low adsorption ability of BiVO4/SiO2/GO nanocomposite was observed when the pollutant was phenol due to negative charge and high stability of phenoxide ions, then the photocatalytic degradation became the main mechanism for phenol removal. The phenol removal efficiency reached approximately 70% in 6 h with H2O2 assistance. The combination of SiO2 and GO improved the surface property of BiVO4-based photocatalyst, however the excessive combination ratio generated the excellent adsorbent material rather than the photocatalyst. Hence, the optimal combination ratio is essential to archive the greatest nanocomposite for photocatalytic application.
To evaluate biometric changes throughout the anterior chamber during accommodation and presbyopia using single image acquisition swept-source anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).
Anterior-segment images were obtained using a new swept-source AS-OCT device (ANTERION, Heidelberg Engineering) from healthy volunteers (n = 71) across two centers in this prospective observational case series. In one image acquisition, cornea through posterior lens, including the ciliary muscle on both sides of the right eye, was imaged. Subjects undertook no accommodative effort and -1, -3, and -5 D of target vergence. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA modeling was performed for ciliary muscle measurements, lens parameters, aqueous depth (AD), and pupil diameter (PD). The first ANOVA factor was accommodative stimuli, and the second factor included age and refractive status.
Maximum ciliary muscle thickness increased with accommodative stimuli (p < 0.001), while the distance from the scleral spur to the max function and better maintained capacity for anterior-segment structural change in myopia.
Admixed populations are a resource to study the global genetic architecture of complex phenotypes, which is critical, considering that non-European populations are severely underrepresented in genomic studies. Here, we study the genetic architecture of BMI in children, young adults, and elderly individuals from the admixed population of Brazil.
Leveraging admixture in Brazilians, whose chromosomes are mosaics of fragments of Native American, European, and African origins, we used genome-wide data to perform admixture mapping/fine-mapping of body mass index (BMI) in three Brazilian population-based cohorts from Northeast (Salvador), Southeast (Bambuí), and South (Pelotas).
We found significant associations with African-associated alleles in children from Salvador (PALD1 and ZMIZ1 genes), and in young adults from Pelotas (NOD2 and MTUS2 genes). More importantly, in Pelotas, rs114066381, mapped in a potential regulatory region, is significantly associated only in females (p = 2.76e-06). This variant is rar genetic variants.
We identified six candidate SNPs associated with BMI. rs114066381 stands out for its high effect that was replicated and its high frequency in women with morbid obesity. We demonstrate how admixed populations are a source of new relevant phenotype-associated genetic variants.IPTG-inducible promoter is popularly used for the expression of recombinant proteins. However, it is not suitable at the industrial scale due to the high cost and toxicity on the producing cells. Recently, a Self-Inducible Expression (SILEX) system has developed to bypass such problems using Hsp70 as an autoinducer. Herein, the effect of other heat shock proteins on the autoinduction of green fluorescent protein (EGFP), romiplostim, and interleukin-2 was investigated. For quantitative measurements, EGFP expression was monitored after double-transformation of pET28a-EGFP and pET21a-(Hsp27/Hsp40/Hsp70) plasmids into E. coli using fluorimetry. Moreover, the expression level, bacterial growth curve, and plasmid and expression stability were compared to an IPTG- inducible system using EGFP. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference in EGFP expression between autoinducible and IPTG-inducible systems. The expression level was higher in Hsp27 system than Hsp70/Hsp40 systems. However, the highest amount of expression was observed for the inducible system. IPTG-inducible and Hsp70 systems showed more lag-time in the bacterial growth curve than Hsp27/Hsp40 systems. A relatively stable EGFP expression was observed in SILEX systems after several freeze-thaw cycles within 90 days, while, IPTG-inducible system showed a decreasing trend compared to the newly transformed bacteria. Moreover, the inducible system showed more variation in the EGFP expression among different clones than clones obtained by SILEX systems. All designed SILEX systems successfully self-induced the expression of protein models. In conclusion, Hsp27 system could be considered as a suitable autoinducible system for protein expression due to less metabolic burden, lower variation in the expression level, suitable plasmid and expression stability, and a higher expression level.A few years ago it was shown that disturbed metabolism of the vitamin D/receptor (VD/VDR) complex may be important in the etiology of spontaneous abortion, as well as in the etiology of recurrent miscarriages (RM). The goal of this study was to investigate the association between four maternal VDR polymorphisms as well as haplotypes settings and RM occurrence in a Polish population of women in reproductive age. A total of 230 women were recruited to this study (110 with RM, 120 consecutively recruited age-matched healthy women with at least two full-term pregnancies and with no history of miscarriages). DNA samples were genotyped for VDR polymorphisms FokI (rs2228570), BsmI (rs1544410), ApaI (rs7975232) and TaqI (rs731236). Significant differences in genotype distributions and allele frequencies between case and control groups were observed in VDR BsmI polymorphism (GG vs. GA and AA, OR = 0.56, p = 0.036 and OR = 1.49, p = 0.035, respectively). The best evidence of an association with RM prevention was observed for the TTGT haplotype, which was more frequent among controls than cases even after permutation test (0.09 vs. 0.017, p = 0.0024). Other haplotypes were also significantly more frequent in the control group TGT (rs7975232, rs1544410, rs2228570), TG (rs7975232, rs1544410), TTG (rs731236, rs7975232, rs1544410), TT (rs731236, rs7975232). XMU-MP-1 Our research indicated the possible role of VDR BsmI genetic polymorphism in RM etiology, suggesting at the same time the active role of maternal VD metabolism and its influence on pregnancy outcome. The significant influence of several maternal haplotypes was shown to prevent RM occurrence.It remains unclear whether leukocyte-related parameters could be used as biomarkers to differentiate metabolically unhealthy overweight/obesity (MUO) from metabolically healthy overweight/obesity (MHO). We aimed to examine the differences in the distribution of leukocyte-related parameters between older adults with MHO and MUO and the correlations of leukocyte-related parameters with individual components of metabolic abnormality. In the Weitang Geriatric Diseases Study on older Chinese adults aged 60 years or above, 404 individuals with MHO and 480 with MUO contributed to the analysis. Overweight/obesity was defined as body mass index (BMI) of 25 kg/m2 or more. MHO and MUO were discriminated based on the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. Leukocyte-related parameters were assessed using an automated hematology analyzer. All leukocyte-related parameters except monocytes were elevated in MUO group compared with MHO group (all P less then 0.05). The prevalence of MUO increased by 24% with each 109/L increase of leukocytes after adjusting for confounders in the multiple-adjusted model (P less then 0.01) and each unit elevation of other parameters except lymphocytes and monocytes were significantly associated with the presence of MUO (all P less then 0.01). Trend tests revealed a linear trend for the association between MUO and all the leukocyte-related parameters (all P for trend less then 0.05). Significant interactions between leukocyte-related parameters and sex on the presence of MUO were observed (all P value for interaction less then 0.05). Higher leukocyte-related parameters were found in patients with MUO than those with MHO and were associated with higher prevalence of MUO which seems to be sex-dependent. Further studies are needed to see whether these parameters could be used as biomarkers for the screening or diagnosis for MUO in clinical or public health practice.
