Brief education increased JUUL-related knowledge and risk perceptions and had a modest impact on commitment to quitting and readiness to quit JUUL (all p≤0.001; ds=0.06-0.74; time×group p>.05 for all contrasts except JUUL-related knowledge). Participants showed modest decreases in interest in future JUUL use, interessuggest current JUUL use status is more important in informing JUUL-related attitudes than smoking status.Most published studies, regarding students' participation in drinking games (DGs), originate from the United States of America (USA). This study extends research to the United Kingdom (UK) and countries of mainland Europe. University students from five countries completed an anonymous online questionnaire which included measures of the frequency of DG participation, along with types, contexts and motives for participation. Responses are compared by the gender, and country of domicile of the participants. The study is based on the results of the questionnaire administered to 306 Social Work students from five universities/countries of which 72.2% are females, with a mean age of 22.6 years. This included students in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and the USA. A high proportion of students, irrespective of gender, or country of domicile, stated that they participated in DGs. To 'meet people' and 'to get drunk' are the most important reasons stated for DG participation. Less benign motives, to 'control others' or 'get other people drunk', are reported as 'not important'. The most common types of DGs were consumption and team DGs. The pre-partying involved in DGs and associated consequences show important targets in alcohol harm minimization interventions. Harm minimization/public health messages regarding safer drinking need to recognize that younger students often feel they are immortal and do not fully appreciate risks and adverse effects of DGs and drink to have fun and be sociable.
This study examined the associations between alcohol-related cognitions within the social reaction pathway of the Prototype Willingness Model and concurrent (use of two or more substances within a specified time period) use of 1) alcohol and marijuana and 2) alcohol and prescription stimulant misuse.

A convenience sample of 1,062 emerging adults in the U.S. (18-20years old; 54.5% female) who reported past 3-month alcohol use completed a baseline survey as part of a larger randomized controlled trial.

Results indicate that controlling for age, biological sex, race, ethnicity, and college enrollment, perceived descriptive norms and willingness to drink were associated with past 3-month concurrent alcohol and marijuana use and concurrent alcohol and prescription stimulant misuse. However, alcohol prototype similarity and alcohol-related perceived vulnerability were not associated with either concurrent use outcome examined.

These findings suggest that alcohol-related perceived descriptive norms and willingness to drink are associated with concurrent substance use among young adults. Thus, it is possible that existing efficacious alcohol interventions that target descriptive norms and willingness to drink may have the added benefit of also reducing concurrent substance cognitions and ultimately use.

Exposure to chronic constant light (CCL) has been reported to impair cognition, yet whether the underlying mechanism involves m6A remains unknown. In this study, mice exposed to CCL for 3 weeks show impaired cognitive behavior, which was associated with increased m6A level in hippocampus. Accordingly, the m6A demethylase FTO was inhibited while the methyltransferases METTL3, METTL14 and WTAP, as well as the reader protein YTHDF2, were elevated in the hippocampus of CCL-exposed mice. CCL exposure significantly activated hippocampal expression of circadian regulator cryptochrome 1 and 2 (CRY1 and 2). Meanwhile, hippocampal neurogenesis was impaired with suppression of BDNF/TrκB/ERK pathway. To further delineate the signaling pathway and the role of m6A, we altered the expression of CRY1/2 in hippocampus neuron cells. CRY1/2 overexpression inhibited FTO and increased m6A levels, while CRY1/2 knockdown led to opposite results. Luciferase reporter analysis further confirmed CRY1/2-induced FTO suppression. Furthermore, FTO knockdown increased m6A on 3'UTR of TrκB mRNA, and decreased TrκB mRNA stability and TrκB protein expression, in a YTHDF2-dependent manner. The analyses were performed in two experimental sets (1) acute toxicity and apical endpoints were characterized, with biomarker assays providing information on the activity levels of catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE); and (2) internal concentration and spatial distribution of moxidectin were determined using ultraperformance liquid chromatography quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QToF-MS) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-MS imaging (MALDI-MSi). The acute toxicity to zebrafish embryos (96 hpf) appeared mainly as a decrease in hatching rates (EC50 = 20.75 μg/L). It also altered the enzymatic activity of biomarker enzymes related to xenobiotic processing, anaerobic metabolism, and oxidative stress (GST, LDH, and CAT, respectively) and strongly accumulated in the embryos, as internal concentrations were 4 orders of magnitude higher than those detected in exposure solutions. MALDI-MSi revealed accumulations of the drug mainly in the head and eyes of the embryos (72 and 96 hpf). Mechanistically, cell migration and invasion were accelerated in 1-NP-exposed pulmonary epithelial cells. In addition, E-cadherin, an epithelial marker, was downregulated, and vimentin, a-SMA and N-cadherin, three mesenchymal markers, were upregulated in 1-NP-exposed pulmonary epithelial cells.
