Adenosine monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is an important therapeutic target, because it is a cellular metabolism energy sensor and key signalling kinase in spermatozoa. We evaluated the effects of rosmarinic acid (RA), an antioxidant, on boar sperm during liquid storage to determine whether it protects boar sperm via AMPK activation. Boar ejaculates were diluted with Modena extender with different concentrations of RA and stored at 17°C for 9 days. Sperm quality parameters, antioxidant capacity, energy metabolism, AMPK phosphorylation and fertility were analysed. Compared with the control, 40 μmol/L significantly improved sperm motility, plasma membrane integrity and acrosome integrity (p less then .05). The effective storage time of boar sperm was up to 9 days. On the third and seventh days, the sperm with RA exhibited increased total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content, mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) activity, whereas malondialdehyde (MDA) content was significantly decreased (p less then .05). Western blot showed that RA, as well as AICAR (AMPK activator), promoted AMPK phosphorylation, whereas Compound C (AMPK inhibitor) inhibited this effect. The sperm-zona pellucida binding experiment showed that 40 μmol/L RA increased the number of sperm attached to the zona pellucida (p less then .05). These findings suggest meaningful methods for improved preservation of boar sperm in vitro and provide new insights into the mechanism by which RA protects sperm cells from oxidative damage via AMPK activation.Microporous zeolites have proven to be of great importance in many chemical processes. Yet, they often suffer from diffusion limitations causing inefficient use of the available catalytically active sites. To address this problem, hierarchical zeolites have been developed, which extensively improve the catalytic performance. There is a multitude of recent literature describing synthesis of and catalysis with these hierarchical zeolites. This review attempts to organize and overview this literature (of the last 5 years), with emphasis on the most important advances with regard to synthesis and application of such zeolites. Special attention is paid to the most common and important 10- and 12-membered ring zeolites (MTT, TON, FER, MFI, MOR, FAU, and *BEA). In contrast to previous reviews, the research per zeolite topology is brought together and discussed here. This allows the reader to instantly find the best synthesis method in accordance to the desired zeolite properties. A summarizing graph is made available to enable the reader to select suitable synthesis procedures based on zeolite acidity and mesoporosity, the two most important tunable properties.Diatoms are unicellular microalgae with cell wall made up of rigid silica found in all open water bodies. They thus resist degradation and hence are important tool to diagnose cause of death in drowned bodies. 4-Hydroxynonenal The nitric acid digestion method practiced conventionally in forensic science laboratories has limitations due to manual error. Plant chloroplast genes found in diatoms such as ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase (rbcL-3P) and rbcL, universal plastidic amplicon (UPA), and photosynthesis I P700 apoprotein chlorophyll Al (psaA), which play an important role in photosystems I and II of photosynthesis, are tested to diagnose drowning in experimental mice. It was seen that psaA-2 showed amplification at 150 bp in all biological samples. The sequences of psaA-2 gene marker showed 100% proximity to Thalassiosira weissflogii and rbcL-3P showed 99% resemblance to Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries. On the other hand, in postmortem drowned biological samples, the chloroplast-based gene marker failed to show any amplification.Advanced paternal age (APA) has no formal definition, though many publications utilize the cutoff of fathers >40 years of age. The literature demonstrates an association between APA and certain conditions including de novo autosomal dominant disorders, birth defects, and neuropsychiatric conditions. This study surveyed 165 genetic counselors within the National Society of Genetic Counselors to assess their current approach to APA. t Tests, analysis of variance, logistic regression, and chi-squared tests were performed on quantitative data, and content analysis was applied to qualitative data. Although most respondents have discussed APA with a patient (88%), there was no consensus on what age cutoff constitutes APA >40 (N = 53, 37.9%), >45 (N = 61, 43.6%), >50 (N = 24, 17.1%), or >55 (N = 2, 1.4%). Those who discussed APA were more likely to be prenatal counselors, see more patients per week, be board certified, or be familiar with current APA guidelines. Respondents agreed the literature supports the association of APA with deleterious outcomes (mean agreement = 8.2, median = 8 on a 1 = strongly disagree to 10 = strongly agree). Individuals who discussed APA and were board certified had higher agreement. Content analysis confirmed agreement that the literature supports an association between APA and deleterious outcomes (documented in responses from 31.5% of prenatal respondents, 17.8% others) but noted that available testing and screening options for associated conditions are limited (34.4% of prenatal respondents, 17.4% others). Prenatal and non-prenatal respondents reported similar agreement with the statement that APA is associated with deleterious outcomes. However, most non-prenatal respondents were unfamiliar with current guidelines (80%), and presumably as a result, were also less likely to discuss APA with their patients. Our study identified a need to disseminate information regarding APA and current guidelines to genetic counselors, particularly non-prenatal and those with less experience.Pharmacy acquisition costs for prescription (Rx ) drugs have been trending below levels implied by the Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS) Consumer Price Index for Rx drugs, with the divergence higher when generic approvals are high. Dropping the first 6 months of generic sales from price indices calculated from pharmacy acquisition costs eliminates most of the difference between such indices and BLS indices.Thyroid hormones are important for homeostatic control of energy metabolism and body temperature. Although skeletal muscle is considered a key site for thyroid action, the contribution of thyroid hormone receptor signaling in muscle to whole-body energy metabolism and body temperature has not been resolved. Here, we show that T3-induced increase in energy expenditure requires thyroid hormone receptor alpha 1 (TRα1 ) in skeletal muscle, but that T3-mediated elevation in body temperature is achieved in the absence of muscle-TRα1 . In slow-twitch soleus muscle, loss-of-function of TRα1 (TRαHSACre ) alters the fiber-type composition toward a more oxidative phenotype. The change in fiber-type composition, however, does not influence the running capacity or motivation to run. RNA-sequencing of soleus muscle from WT mice and TRαHSACre mice revealed differentiated transcriptional regulation of genes associated with muscle thermogenesis, such as sarcolipin and UCP3, providing molecular clues pertaining to the mechanistic underpinnings of TRα1 -linked control of whole-body metabolic rate. Together, this work establishes a fundamental role for skeletal muscle in T3-stimulated increase in whole-body energy expenditure.
Research on resolving implant fracture is still gaining attention as it can be a serious treatment failure outcome. The implant fracture is likely to occur due to increased stress in implant body associated with peri-implant bone resorption.
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between degree of peri-implant bone resorption and stress distribution in implant body by using finite element analysis (FEA).
The magnitude and direction of loads on implants at the mandibular molar region were measured with 3D piezoelectric force transducers in a patient during maximal voluntary clenching, grinding and tapping to obtain input for the FEA as the loading condition. Simplified finite element bone models were generated to simulate the six patterns of peri-implant bone resorption progression which the bone levels from implant platform were set at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5mm. Three types of implants with different diameters (3.5, 4.0 and 5.0mm), corresponding abutments and screws were created. FEA using the in vivo measured load was conducted to investigate how peri-implant bone loss affects stress distribution in the implant body.
Loading condition affected stress distribution in the implant body. As bone resorption increased, von Mises stress in the implant body became larger, which was marked in smaller diameter implants, and this change was amply demonstrated when the bone resorption increased from 0 to 2mm.
The FEA demonstrated that as peri-implant bone loss increased, the magnitude of stress in the implant increased, especially in small diameter implants.

A total of 250 quails were fed different diet D1, basal diet (BD); D2, BD plus palmarosa oil (PO; 100 µg/kg diet); D3, BD plus lemon myrtle oil (LMO; 100 µg/kg diet); D4, BD plus α-Tops (mixture of α-terpineol, cineole and terpinene-4-ol; 100 µg/kg diet); and D5, BD plus cyclodextrin. Overall growth performance was determined at multiple time points during 35 days of experiment. Carcass characteristics (fatty acid, pH and colour), intestinal morphology and the expression levels of meat quality-related genes including the insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), myogenin and avian uncoupling protein (avUCP) were examined at the end of the trial. Additionally, intestinal microbiome of quails was studied by next-generation sequencing-based culture-independent analysis. Although the inclusion of EOs into the diet had no effect on the growth performance of quails and the microbial profile, the significant changes in pH24 and colour (a*) of the quail's breast muscle (p less then .
