The estimation of evolutionary parameters provides essential information for designing public health policies. In short time intervals, however, nucleotide substitutions are ineffective to record all complexities of virus population dynamics. In this sense, the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic poses a challenge for evolutionary analysis. OD36 We used computer simulation to evolve populations in scenarios of varying temporal intervals to evaluate the impact of the age of an epidemic on estimates of time and geography. Before estimating virus timescales, the shape of tree topologies can be used as a proxy to assess the effectiveness of the virus phylogeny in providing accurate estimates of evolutionary parameters. In short timescales, estimates have larger uncertainty. We compared the predictions from simulations with empirical data. The tree shape of SARS-CoV-2 was closer to shorter timescales scenarios, which yielded parametric estimates with larger uncertainty, suggesting that estimates from these datasets should be evaluated cautiously. To increase the accuracy of the estimates of virus transmission times between populations, the uncertainties associated with the age estimates of both the crown and stem nodes should be communicated. We place the age of the common ancestor of the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in late September 2019, corroborating an earlier emergence of the virus.Spin Crossover (SCO) particles at the nanometric scale provide an alternative point of view and a new perspective concerning the development of a new generation of spintronic, electronic, photonic and mechanical devices. The coexistence of the SCO phenomenon with the accompanying hysteresis loop enhances the functionality of future devices for storing and processing information. Despite all promising facts, the SCO phenomena are greatly affected by cooperativity issues resulting in a direct relation between the decrease of the size of nanopatricle and the overall decrease of cooperativity towards more gradual spin transitions. This minireview aims to summarise the synthetic techniques for the synthesis of 2-D FeII SCO particles at the nanometric scale, an underexplored area of research, highlighting the effects of the size-reduction on the magnetic properties of the corresponding nanoparticles and hopefuly showcasing the importance of studying in the context of 2D limit the SCO phenomena.A selective and efficient route for the deoxygenative reduction of primary to tertiary amides to corresponding amines has been achieved with pinacolborane (HBpin) using simple and readily accessible 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenolate lithium·THF (1a) as a catalyst. OD36 Both experimental and DFT studies provide mechanistic insight.Correction for 'Injectable postoperative enzyme-responsive hydrogels for reversing temozolomide resistance and reducing local recurrence after glioma operation' by Zongren Zhao et al., Biomater. Sci., 2020, 8, 5306-5316, DOI 10.1039/D0BM00338G.The selective alkylation of nucleic acids is important for a medicinal approach and biological study. We now report a novel selective alkylation of the parallel G-quadruplex structure using the conjugate of the macrocyclic hexaoxazole L2G2-6OTD-1M1PA and vinyl-quinazolinone-S(O)Me (6OTD-VQ-S(O)Me).Engineering the spectral lineshape of plasmonic modes by various electromagnetic couplings and mode interferences enables significant improvements for plasmonic sensing. However, bulk and surface sensitivities remain constrained by a trade-off arising from their respective dependence on the interaction volume and decay length of the plasmonic mode, making higher bulk sensitivity realized at the expense of reduced surface sensitivity. We propose a new approach to overcome this trade-off by combining near-field and far-field coupling in an intercalated 3-disk plasmonic crystal, where ∼10× higher figure of merit (FoM) and ∼2× higher surface sensitivity can be achieved, in comparison with those achievable by localized surface plasmons. A plasmonic mode with a Q-factor up to ∼110 is demonstrated based on gold 3-disk arrays in the visible spectrum, with a bulk FoM of ∼24 and a surface sensitivity prefactor of ∼13.56. The design and fabrication simplicity of the 3-disk structure highlight its potential for a robust plasmonic sensing platform with a high figure of merit.Aluminum toxicity in biological systems is a well-known issue yet remains as a prevalent and unsolvable problem due to the lack of proper molecular tools that can detect free aluminum(iii) or Al(iii) ions in vivo. Herein, we report a water-soluble photo-induced electron transfer (PET)-based turn-ON/OFF fluorometric chemosensor for the dual detection of Al(iii) and fluoride ions in aqueous media with a nanomolar (∼1.7 × 10-9 M) and picomolar (∼2 × 10-12 M, lowest ever detection so far) detection limit, respectively. Fluoride ions in sea water could be detected as well as the recognition of non-contamination in drinking water. link2 In addition, using live-cell microscopy, Al(iii) ions were detected in live biological samples in vivo to aid establishing the aluminum-toxicity effect.Brazil is one of the largest pesticide consumers in the world. In the last few years, the use of permissive environmental laws and newly authorized pesticide formulations has been enlarged. Thus, the intensive and inadequate use of pesticides may present a risk to human health since these compounds may move between environmental compartments. Outdoor air samples were collected using low-volume samplers at Arapongas city in the state of Paraná, Brazil, between February and November of 2017. Polyurethane foam (PUF) cartridges were presented as a good choice to collect pesticides from atmospheric gas phase samples when compared to styrene-divinylbenzene (XAD-2). Lower limits of quantitation were obtained with PUF cartridges, which allowed a greater number of samples to be quantified in PUF than in XAD-2. Atrazine and trifluralin were quantified for the first time in Brazilian air samples. The levels of concentration ranged between 192-1731 pg m-3 (chlorpyrifos), 136-1345 pg m-3 (atrazine) and 184-1189 pg m-3 (trifluralin). Alachlor has been out of market in Brazil since 2013, and thus it was not detected in any gas phase sample. The highest daily inhalation exposure was observed in infants, 1 × 10-6 mg kg-1 d-1 for atrazine, chlorpyrifos and trifluralin. None of the analyzed pesticides were associated with a hazardous quotient (HQ) > 1, considering the worst-case scenario for infants, indicating that there is no risk associated with the exposed population. link2 Cancer risk assessment for trifluralin resulted in values below 1 × 10-6, therefore not indicating any significant risk to human health. The improvement of Li-ion transport properties and doping engineering in Li-ion batteries are currently active research topics in the search for next-generation energy storage devices. In this theoretical work, the intrinsic defect formation and transport properties of divalent metal-doped Li2SnO3, which is being considered as an electrode and coating electrode material, are explored using atomistic simulations. Defect formation simulations reveal that all divalent dopants (Zn, Sc, Cd and Eu) occupy the Li site with charge compensation through Li vacancies. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the divalent dopants significantly reduce the activation energy for ionic diffusion and conduction compared to the undoped sample. The effects of both grains and grain boundaries on the Li-ion transport properties are investigated. OD36 Our calculated results demonstrate a marked improvement in the properties of Li2SnO3 that can be achieved either in current commercial and next-generation Li-ion battery technologies through divalent doping in mono- and polycrystalline Li2SnO3 samples. The pregnane X receptor (PXR) mediates the resistance of sorafenib in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by promoting the clearance or elimination of sorafenib via the drug resistance-related downstream genes of the PXR. Previously, we revealed that rhamnetin (a flavonoid functioning as an inhibitor of sirtuin (Sirt)1) could inhibit expression of the downstream gene of the PXR multidrug resistance 1 (mdr-1). However, how rhamnetin regulates the PXR pathway in HCC cells is not known. link2 Here, we demonstrated that rhamnetin decelerated elimination of the molecular-targeting agent sorafenib in HCC cells via the microRNA (miR)-148a/PXR axis. Rhamnetin treatment decreased expression of the drug resistance-related downstream genes of PXR (cyp3a4 [cytochrome P-450] or mdr-1 [multi-drug resistance 1]), which mediate the metabolism or elimination of sorafenib in HCC cells. Mechanistically, rhamnetin increased expression of miR-148a (which is tumor-suppressive) in a P53-dependent manner, leading to inhibition of PXR expression and decrease in expression of its downstream genes. Rhamnetin enhanced miRNA-148a transcription by repressing Sirt1 activation to enhance acetylation at residue-373 of P53. Rhamnetin treatment decelerated the metabolic clearance of sorafenib in HCC cells and enhanced the sensitivity of HCC cells to sorafenib. Our results suggest that rhamnetin could be a potential agent for overcoming sorafenib resistance in HCC treatment. Many experimental studies have demonstrated that titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) could induce adverse health effects in vivo and in vitro. But epidemiological evidence and biomarkers related to early health effects are still lacking. This study aimed to explore biomarkers in the urine samples of workers occupationally exposed to a relatively low concentration of TiO2 NPs. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Jinan, China, involving 132 employees of a TiO2 NP manufacturing plant, among which the exposed group and control group were 1  1 matched by confounding factors such as gender, age, BMI, smoking and drinking. link3 Untargeted metabolomics was performed in urine samples using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) technology. The differential metabolites between the TiO2 NP exposed group and the control group were analyzed and then screened for potential biomarkers using bioinformatics methods. Metabolomics found a total of 1760 differentially expressed metabolites in the TiO2 NP exposed group, of which 60 differential metabolites were simultaneously confirmed by one-dimensional and multi-dimensional statistical analysis. Among these 60 differential metabolites, the relative expression of 27 metabolites increased, and the remaining 33 decreased. Pathway enrichment analysis further found that the metabolic pathway of long chain acyl-coa dehydrogenase deficiency (Lcad) was significantly enriched. Ten differential metabolites were selected as potential biomarkers of occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs using machine learning methods, including dibenzyl ether, quassimarin, tryptophan, etc. The receiver operating characteristic curves (ROCs) of these potential biomarkers showed good sensitivity and specificity. These potential biomarkers also had biological basis for occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs. link3 link3 Therefore, urine metabolites represented by dibenzyl ether are considered as good biomarkers of early health effects for occupational exposure to TiO2 NPs.
