This study aimed to assess the changes in the immunological response against αS1-casein during oral immunotherapy (OIT) and to investigate the mechanism of tolerance. METHODS We have performed rush OIT to 39 patients with CMA and obtained the serum samples up to 3 years after OIT. Immunoglobulin E (IgE) and IgG4 antibodies specific to highly purified αS1-casein as well as passively-sensitized basophil activation were evaluated using the serial samples. Furthermore, we examined whether basophil activation led by the pre-OIT serum was suppressed by the post-OIT serum, or by the tolerant serum obtained from naturally outgrown patients. RESULTS Specific IgE to αS1-casein was significantly reduced after OIT. Specific IgG4 (sIgG4) to αS1-casein was also detected in most of the pre-OIT sera, which was not significantly increased after OIT. Activation of passively-sensitized basophils to αS1-casein was significantly reduced after 2 years (14% ± 19%) and 3 years (19% ± 18%) post-OIT compared with pre-OIT (%CD63high basophils; 51% ± 27%). Furthermore, the addition of post-OIT or tolerant serum to pre-OIT serum significantly suppressed the basophil activation. This suppression was abrogated by washing the supernatant after passive sensitization, but not by depleting IgG antibodies from post-OIT or tolerant sera, nor by blocking FcγRIIb using an anti-FcγR antibody. CONCLUSIONS αS1-casein-sIgG4 plays a minor role in tolerance mechanisms in cases of CMA; humoral factors other than antigen-sIgG4 may be involved. © 2020 The Authors. Immunity, Inflammation and Disease published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Culture has become increasingly important concepts in nursing in the era of globalization. Nurses' cultural biases and prejudices are huge obstacles to their caring for patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. Therefore, this study examined sexism among nursing students from two patriarchal societies Turkey influenced by Islam, and South Korea influenced by Confucianism. For this comparative study, we used the survey data from the sample of 560 nursing students, 309 from Turkey and 251 from South Korea. The findings showed that both samples showed high levels of sexism, both hostile and benevolent. When comparing the two samples, Turkish nursing students showed significantly higher sexism than did Korean students. Additionally, in both countries, male participants showed higher scores on sexism, especially hostile sexism. In terms of age, older students in Turkey showed lower levels of benevolent sexism. We hope the findings of this study can provide evidence to develop customized transcultural nursing education content in the context of different ethnicities and to help nurses and nursing students from specific cultural backgrounds in becoming aware of their own cultures. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd.We have developed a methodology to afford enantioenriched tertiary azides and bromides through pentanidium-catalyzed kinetic resolution (KR) of racemic tertiary bromides under base free condition. We found that the absence of water is crucial to obtain high selectivity factor ( s ). On the other hand, new experimental observations and DFT modelling led us to propose that enantioconvergent azidation of tertiary bromides proceeded through dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR). The investigations particularly identified the crucial roles of base and water in the enantioconvergent process, supporting the proposal that tertiary bromide isomerizes in the presence of base and water through a S N 2X pathway . © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.Jet lag is commonly experienced when travelers cross multiple time zones, leaving the wake-sleep cycle and intrinsic biological "clocks" out of synchrony with the current environment. The effect of jet lag on intrinsic cortical function remains unclear. Twenty-two healthy individuals experiencing west-to-east jet lag flight were recruited. Brain structural and functional magnetic resonance studies, as well as psychological and neurohormonal tests, were carried out when participants returned from travel over six time zones and 50 days later when their jet lag symptoms had resolved. During jet lag, the functional brain network exhibited a small-world topology that was shifted toward regularity. Alterations during jet lag relative to recovery included decreased basal ganglia-thalamocortical network connections and increased functional connectivity between the medial temporal lobe subsystem and medial visual cortex. The lower melatonin and higher thyroid hormone levels during jet lag showed the same trend as brain activity in the right lingual gyrus. Although there was no significant difference between cortisol measurements during and after jet lag, cortisol levels were associated with temporal lobe activity in the jet lag condition. Brain and neuroendocrine changes during jet lag were related to jet lag symptoms. Further prospective studies are needed to explore the time course over which jet lag acts on the human brain. © 2020 The Authors. The 1.9 μm column showed excellent kinetic performance, comparable to that of the superficially porous one. These two columns also exhibit flatter c-branches of the van Deemter curve compared to the 1.7 μm fully porous particles column, resulting in smaller loss of efficiency when they are operated at higher flow rates than the optimal ones. The independent evaluation of each contribution to band broadening has revealed that the difference in kinetic performance comes from the very small eddy dispersion contribution on the 1.9 μm column, surprisingly even lower than that of the superficially porous one. This finding suggests a very good packing of the monodisperse 1.9 μm column. On the other hand, the potential of 1.7 μm fully porous particles is completely broken down by the strong frictional heating effect already arising at relatively low flow rates.
