In conjunction with the atmospheric boundary layer in the vertical direction, they form confined three-dimensional structures that significantly affect air pollution. However, the role of AIBs in regional pollution has not been systematically elucidated. Based on surface observations, this study investigates PM2.5 pollution distributions under the forcing of various AIBs in the North China Plain. A total of 98 regional pollution episodes are identified during the autumn and winter of 2014-2020, and are further classified according to the impact of AIBs. In the pollution formation-maintenance stage, there are three categories. The frontal category (with a frequency of 41%), including the frontal trough type and frontal inverted trough type, displays the most polluted air masses along the mountains. The frontal AIB defines the lateral border of the pollution zone and forms a frontal ated by a typical case.Phytoremediation is an in-situ remediation technology based on the ability of plants to fix pollutants from the soil. In this sense, plants such as Festuca arundinacea are a promising for heavy metal removal in contaminated soils. The present work studies phytoremediation for Pb removal from a contaminated soil located in Spain using F. arundinacea by applying the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. Two different options for biomass management were assessed direct disposal in a security landfill (case 1A) and energy recovery (case 1B). For the latter option, cogeneration was simulated using SuperPro Designer 9.5. In addition, traditional treatments such as soil washing (case 2) and excavation + landfill (case 3) were evaluated in terms of environmental impacts by LCA. The former was simulated using SuperPro Designer 9.5, whereas data from literature were used for the latter to perform the LCA. Results showed that biomass disposal in a landfill was the most important contributor to the overall impact in case 1A. In contrast, biomass conditioning and cogeneration were the main steps responsible for environmental impacts in case 1B. Comparing cases 1A and 1B, the energy recovery from biomass was superior to direct landfill disposal, reducing the environmental impacts in most of the studied categories. Regarding the rest of the treatments, chemical production and soil disposal presented the most critical environmental burdens in cases 2 and 3, respectively. Finally, the comparison between the studied cases revealed that phytoextraction + energy recovery was the most environmentally friendly option for the studied conditions, reducing impacts by 30-100%.Solid-recovered fuels (SRFs) with low chlorine (Cl) contents are urgently needed, particularly considering the limited availability of energy resources globally. Two main sources of chlorinated pollution in municipal solid wastes, namely food waste and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), were used as raw materials for SRF production. These materials were dechlorinated using alkaline adsorbents (calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3)), yielding five sample SRFs. The SRFs had low heating values (LHVs) of 14.10-15.12 MJ/kg. The alkaline adsorbents were introduced during dry dechlorination, which increased the LHVs by 8.4 MJ/g. Approximately 50 % of the total Cl content was transformed into the liquid and gaseous phases after incineration of the SRF. The PVC content was increased to increase the amount of gaseous Cl produced. Conversely, the yields of liquid and solid Cl increased when the FW content was increased. Among alkaline adsorbents, Ca(OH)2 exhibited better adsorption performance than NaHCO3. Upon mixing ~15 wt% of Ca(OH)2 with the SRFs, the highest Cl removal efficiency (77 %) in the gaseous phase was achieved. Over 90 % of the total Cl content was converted into solid-phase calcium chloride and sodium chloride by the alkaline adsorbents. The total cost of the SRF was US$85.48/t, of which labor and electricity costs accounted for 50 % and 25 %, respectively.Monitoring the communal incidence of COVID-19 is important for both government and residents of an area to make informed decisions. However, continuous reliance on one means of monitoring might not be accurate because of biases introduced by government policies or behaviours of residents. Wastewater surveillance was employed to monitor concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in raw influent wastewater from wastewater treatment plants serving three Canadian Prairie cities with different population sizes. Data obtained from wastewater are not directly influenced by government regulations or behaviours of individuals. The means of three weekly samples collected using 24 h composite auto-samplers were determined. Viral loads were determined by RT-qPCR, and whole-genome sequencing was used to charaterize variants of concern (VOC). The dominant VOCs in the three cities were the same but with different proportions of sub-lineages. Sub-lineages of Delta were AY.12, AY.25, AY.27 and AY.93 in 2021, while the major sub-lineage of Omicron was BA.1 in January 2022, and BA.2 subsequently became a trace-level sub-variant then the predominant VOC. When each VOC was first detected varied among cities; However, Saskatoon, with the largest population, was always the first to present new VOCs. Viral loads varied among cities, but there was no direct correlation with population size, possibly because of differences in flow regimes. Population is one of the factors that affects trends in onset and development of local outbreaks during the pandemic. This might be due to demography or the fact that larger populations had greater potential for inter- and intra-country migration. Hence, wastewater surveillance data from larger cities can typically be used to indicate what to expect in smaller communities.The continuous growth of urban areas in the last decades has resulted in an increase in water consumption, contributing to larger volumes of urban and domestic wastewater. Thus, stakeholders have been seeking for efficient alternatives for wastewater management, namely looking for new forms of treatment and reuse. The present work provides new insights on the application of a green wall for greywater treatment, aiming at water reuse and also at contributing to Circular Economy. Two types of recycled materials, crushed tiles and textile fibers, were tested as filling media combined with two plant species. Crushed tiles were mixed with coconut fibers in a 70 %-30 % ratio and textile fibers were used as single media. The tiles+coconut mix with plants performed the best, exhibiting on average removal efficiencies >70 % for Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and between 59 %-70 % for Total Suspended Solids (TSS). Fibers systems had on average removal efficiencies around 60 % for COD and 50 % for TSS and clogged at the end of the study. Overall the study demonstrated that green walls for greywater treatment can contribute to circular economy through the use of recycled material as filling media.Lakes are considered important regulators of atmospheric greenhouse gases (GHG). We estimated late summer open water GHG fluxes in nine hemiboreal lakes in Estonia classified under different lake types according to the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). We also used the WFD typology to provide an improved estimate of the total GHG emission from all Estonian lakes with a gross surface area of 2204 km2 representing 45,227 km2 of hemiboreal landscapes (the territory of Estonia). The results demonstrate largely variable CO2 fluxes among the lake types with most active emissions from Alkalitrophic (Alk), Stratified Alkalitrophic (StratAlk), Dark Soft and with predominant binding in Coastal, Very Large, and Light Soft lakes. The CO2 fluxes correlated strongly with dissolved CO2 saturation (DCO2) values at the surface. Highest CH4 emissions were measured from the Coastal lake type, followed by Light Soft, StratAlk, and Alk types; Coastal, Light Soft, and StratAlk were emitting CH4 partly as bubbles. Fezolinetant concentration The only emitter of N2O was the Alk type. We measured weak binding of N2O in Dark Soft and Coastal lakes, while in all other studied lake types, the N2O fluxes were too small to be quantified. Diversely from the common viewpoint of lakes as net sources of both CO2 and CH4, it turns out from our results that at least in late summer, Estonian lakes are net sinks of both CO2 alone and the sum of CO2 and CH4. This is mainly caused by the predominant CO2 sink function of Lake Peipsi forming ¾ of the total lake area and showing negative net emissions even after considering the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of other GHGs. Still, by converting CH4 data into CO2 equivalents, the combined emission of all Estonian lakes (8 T C day-1) is turned strongly positive 2720 T CO2 equivalents per day.Microbial communities, including endosymbionts, play diverse and critical roles in host biology and reproduction, but contaminant exposure may cause an imbalance in the microbiome composition with subsequent impacts on host health. Here, we examined whether there was a significant alteration of the microbiome community within two taxa of riparian spiders (Tetragnathidae and Araneidae) from a site with historical polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination in southern Ontario, Canada. Riparian spiders specialize in the predation of adult aquatic insects and, as such, their contaminant levels closely track those of nearby aquatic ecosystems. DNA from whole spiders from sites with either low or high PCB contamination was extracted, and spider microbiota profiled by partial 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The most prevalent shift in microbial communities we observed was a large reduction in endosymbionts in spiders at the high PCB site. The abundance of endosymbionts at the high PCB site was 63 % and 98 % lower for tetragnathids and araneids, respectively, than at the low PCB site. Overall, this has potential implications for spider reproductive success and food webs, as riparian spiders are critical gatekeepers of energy and material fluxes at the land-water interface.We evaluated the total content of 28 metals in synthetic turf rubber granule infill and performed extraction tests using four types of simulated biofluids to assess the health effects of synthetic turf crumb rubbers used in Japan. The highest median metal concentration was obtained for Zn, with median concentrations above 100 μg/g, followed by Al, Fe, and Mn. The highest median Pb concentration was 19.9 μg/g. The metal concentrations of the samples were different depending on the origin/material. Among high-concentration metals, Al, Fe, and Mn were higher in ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber, and Zn was higher in tires. Significantly higher Sb and Sr concentrations were observed in other materials, including industrial rubber, synthetic rubber, and thermoplastic elastomer, compared with tires. However, significantly higher Sn, Co, Pb, and Cd concentrations were detected in tires compared with other materials. Metals with high concentrations independent of the origin/material were considered derived from materials added during the manufacturing process.
