The importance of dietetic foods with health potential has increased the interest of consumers on crops with nutraceutical messages. Several plant food products from selected ancient crops like flax, chia, black cumin, sunflower, sesame, and pumpkin seeds contain substances with high health benefits. These crops are usually rich sources in fatty acids, sterols, phenolic compounds and dietary fiber which have mainly shown the ability to increase satiety and obesity control, among chronic degenerative diseases and others. These plant seeds offer outstanding features for the food and nutraceutical industries, due to their functional components. This review focuses on scientific evidence of the different potential benefits of these crops on human antiobesity promotion.Obesity is associated with an increased risk of chronic, low-grade systematic inflammation for which exercise training (EX) and caloric restriction (CR) are potential treatments. We therefore performed a systematic meta-analysis to compare the effect of EX vs. CR and EX + CR vs. CR on inflammation markers in overweight and obese individuals. Cell Cycle inhibitor PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and the Cochrane were searched up to April 2020 for EX vs. CR or EX + CR vs. CR interventions studies on inflammatory makers i.e. CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α in overweight and obese individuals. Standardized mean differences and 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Thirty two articles (reporting 38 trials) involving 2108 participants were included in the meta-analysis. Based on studies that directly compared EX and CR, there were no evidence for an effect of EX on IL-6 (p = 0.20) and TNF-α (p = 0.58), when compared with a CR. However, when compared to EX, CR has a statistically greater benefit on CRP (p = 0.01). In those studies, directly comparing EX + CR and CR, EX + CR caused a larger decrease in TNF-α (p = 0.002) and IL-6 (p = 0.02) and tended to decrease CRP (p = 0.06) when compared with CR. These results suggest that a combination of EX and CR may be more effective than CR alone at reducing inflammatory cytokines and CRP in overweight and obese individuals.The chemical structure of unsaturated fatty acids makes them highly prone to oxidation, which decreases their nutritional properties. Nanocarriers have the ability to protect unstable nutraceuticals and take them to their specific targets. Thus, the aim is to determine the effectiveness of nanoencapsulation of omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids as protection against oxidation, as well as to apply data-mining approach to identify nanoencapsulation profiles. Three databases were used to search for studies focused on comparing omega-3 encapsulation to the active compound in its raw form. Studies without oxidation test or no use omega 3-rich oil as active ingredient in nanoformulations were excluded. Twenty-three studies were included in the systematic review. The qualitative analysis indicated that the main evaluated parameters were encapsulation efficiency (%), physical-chemical parameters and oxidation (analyzed at different storage temperatures), oil type, and whether the formulation was added to food. With regard to quantitative analysis, studies that did not perform oxidation tests focused on comparing free oil to the encapsulated one were excluded. Data-mining indicated that encapsulation efficiency and particle size were the main characteristic defining nanocarrier's effectiveness in protecting the oil against oxidation. Nevertheless, it is important to note the main characteristics associated with oil protection in nanocarriers.Chronic diseases are responsible for approximately 71% global deaths. These are characterized by chronic low-grade inflammation and metabolic alterations. "Functional foods" have been attributed with anti-inflammatory properties, demonstrated in cell lines and murine models; however, studies in humans are inconclusive. The purpose of this systematic review is to identify clinical trials that analyzed changes in inflammatory and metabolic mediators, in response to consumption of specific functional foods. A total of 3581 trials were screened and 88 were included for this review. Foods identified to regulate inflammation included cranberries, grapes, pomegranate, strawberries, wheat, whole grain products, low fat dairy products, yogurt, green tea, cardamom, turmeric, soy foods, almonds, chia seeds, flaxseed, pistachios, algae oil, flaxseed oil and grape seed oil. Clinical trials that focus on a dietary pattern rich in functional foods are necessary to explore if the additive effect of these foods lead to more clinically relevant outcomes.Background Previous studies have suggested a strong association of liver fibrosis scores (LFSs) with cardiovascular outcomes in patients with different cardiovascular diseases. Nonetheless, it is basically blank regarding the prognostic significance of LFSs in patients following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). This study sought to examine the potential role of LFSs in predicting long-term outcomes in a large cohort of patients with stable coronary artery disease after elective PCI. Methods and Results In this multicenter, prospective study, we consecutively enrolled 4003 patients with stable coronary artery disease undergoing PCI. Eight currently available noninvasive LFSs were assessed for each subject. All patients were followed up for the occurrence of cardiovascular events including cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and stroke. During an average follow-up of 5.0±1.6 years, 315 (7.87%) major cardiovascular events were recorded. These include its (1) potential to produce other mycotoxins, (2) persistence in the field in light of several ecological factors, (3) its reproductive and genetic stability, (4) the mechanism(s) employed that allow it to elicit control over aflatoxigenic strains and species of agricultural importance and (5) supplemental alternatives that increase its effectiveness. There is a need to be consistent, practical and thoughtful when it comes to implementing this method of mycotoxin mitigation since these fungi are living organisms that have been adapting, evolving and surviving on this planet for tens-of-millions of years. This document will serve as a critical review of the literature regarding pre-harvest A. flavus biocontrol and will discuss opportunities for improvements.About one-third of the world population is suffering from iron deficiency. Delivery of iron through diet is a practical, economical, and sustainable approach. Clinical studies have shown that the consumption of iron-fortified foods is one of the most effective methods for the prevention of iron deficiency. However, supplementing iron through diet can cause undesirable side-effects. Thus, it is essential to develop new iron-rich ingredients, iron-fortified products with high bioavailability, better stability, and lower cost. It is also essential to develop newer processing technologies for more effective fortification. This review compared the iron supplementation strategies used to treat the highly iron-deficient population and the general public. We also reviewed the efficacy of functional (iron-rich) ingredients that can be incorporated into food materials to produce iron-fortified foods. The most commonly available foods, such as cereals, bakery products, dairy products, beverages, and condiments are still the best vehicles for iron fortification and delivery.Scope of reviewThe manuscript aims at providing a comprehensive review of the latest publications that cover three aspects administration routes for iron supplementation, iron-rich ingredients used for iron supplementation, and iron-fortified foods.Although the attention of the world and the global health community specifically is deservedly focused on the COVID-19 pandemic, other determinants of health continue to have large impacts and may also interact with COVID-19. Air pollution is one crucial example. Established evidence from other respiratory viruses and emerging evidence for COVID-19 specifically indicates that air pollution alters respiratory defense mechanisms leading to worsened infection severity. Air pollution also contributes to comorbidities that are known to worsen outcomes among those infected with COVID-19, and air pollution may also enhance infection transmission due to its impact on more frequent coughing. Yet despite the massive disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are reasons for optimism broad societal lockdowns have shown us a glimpse of what a future with strong air pollution measures could yield. Thus, the urgency to combat air pollution is not diminished, but instead heightened in the context of the pandemic.Background Quality of care incentives and reimbursements for cardiovascular testing differ between insurance providers. We hypothesized that there are differences in the use of guideline-concordant testing between Medicaid versus commercial insurance patients less then 65 years, and between Medicare Advantage versus Medicare fee-for-service patients ≥65 years. Methods and Results Using data from the Colorado All-Payer Claims Database from 2015 to 2018, we identified patients eligible to receive a high-value test recommended by guidelines assessment of left ventricular function among patients hospitalized with acute myocardial infarction or incident heart failure, or a low-value test that provides minimal patient benefit stress testing prior to low-risk surgery or routine stress testing within 2 years of percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Among 145 616 eligible patients, 37% had fee-for-service Medicare, 18% Medicare Advantage, 22% Medicaid, and 23% commercial insurance. Using multilevel logistic regression models adjusted for patient characteristics, Medicaid patients were less likely to receive high-value testing for acute myocardial infarction (odds ratio [OR], 0.84 [0.73-0.98]; P=0.03) and heart failure (OR, 0.59 [0.51-0.70]; P less then 0.01) compared with commercially insured patients. Medicare Advantage patients were more likely to receive high-value testing for acute myocardial infarction (OR, 1.35 [1.15-1.59]; P less then 0.01) and less likely to receive low-value testing after percutaneous coronary intervention/ coronary artery bypass graft (OR, 0.63 [0.55-0.72]; P less then 0.01) compared with Medicare fee-for-service patients. Conclusions Guideline-concordant testing was less likely to occur among patients with Medicaid compared with commercial insurance, and more likely to occur among patients with Medicare Advantage compared with fee-for-service Medicare. Insurance plan features may provide valuable targets to improve guideline-concordant testing.
