The present research was a retrospective observational study and enrolled consecutive patients diagnosed with mild TAO according to European Group on Graves's Orbitopathy with corrected to normal vision. Full-field electroretinography, pattern visual evoked potential (PVEP) and isolated-check visual evoked potential (icVEP) were performed for TAO patients and age-matched normal subjects.

Thirty-two eyes with mild TAO and forty-six eyes from normal subjects were included. Statistically significant increase in the amplitude of dark-adapted 0.01, 3 and 10 ERG and total oscillatory potentials and light-adapted 3 and 30Hz flicker ERG were observed in TAO patients compared with the normal subjects, but not the latency. No significant difference was observed in the P100 amplitude or latency in 1° and 15' PVEP between TAO patients and normal subjects. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was not significantly different in TAO patients at the contrast of 1%, 2%, 8%, 16% or 32% icVEP, and the SNR in contrast 4% icVEP was significantly smaller in TAO patients compared to normal subjects.

To determine the utility of ophthalmology evaluation, dark-adapted threshold, and full-field electroretinogram for early detection of Usher syndrome in young patients with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss.

We identified 39 patients with secure genetic diagnoses of Usher Syndrome. Visual acuity, spherical equivalent, fundus appearance, dark-adapted threshold, and full-field electroretinogram results were summarized and compared to those in a group of healthy controls with normal hearing. In those Usher patients with repeated measures, regression analysis was done to evaluate for change in visual acuity and dark-adapted threshold with age. Spherical equivalent and full-field electroretinogram responses from dark- and light-adapted eyes were evaluated as a function of age.

The majority of initial visual acuity and spherical equivalent results were within normal limits for age. Visual acuity and dark-adapted threshold worsened significantly with age in Usher type 1 but not in Usher type 2. At initial test, full-field electroretinogram responses from dark- and light-adapted eyes were abnormal in 53% of patients. Remarkably, nearly half of our patients (17% of Usher type 1 and 30% of Usher type 2) would have been missed by tests of retinal function alone if evaluated before age 10.

Although there is an association of abnormal dark-adapted threshold and full-field electroretinogram at young ages in Usher patients, it appears that a small but important proportion of patients would not be detected by tests of retinal function alone. In this study, gas exchange along the vertical profile in a maize canopy was examined. The relationships between leaf- and ecosystem-level carbon and water fluxes were compared. The results from research conducted over two growing seasons showed that during vegetative growth, the top and middle leaf layers in the canopy contribute most to the carbon and water fluxes of the entire canopy. During the grain-filling stage, gas exchange processes were performed mostly in the middle leaves with and near the ears. Significant relationships were observed between the net ecosystem CO2 exchange rate (NEE) plus soil respiration and the assumed canopy levels (Acanopy) and between evapotranspiration rates at the ecosystem (ET) and assumed canopy levels (Ecanopy). This highlights the close associations between these parameters by integrating the leaf gas exchange rates measured in a conventional leaf cuvette and those at the ecosystem level via the eddy covariance technique. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as a therapeutic option due to its intrinsic properties to alleviate inflammatory responses, capable to promote the restoring of injured tissue. EVs contain heterogeneous cargo, including active microRNAs, small noncoding sequences involved in post-transcriptional gene repression or degradation and can attach in multiple targets. This study investigated whether the MSC-EVs miRNA cargo has the capacity to modulate the exacerbated cytokines, cell death and coagulation disturbs present in severe COVID-19. Through bioinformatics analysis, four datasets of miRNA, using different stem cell tissue sources (bone marrow, umbilical cord and adipose tissue), and one dataset of mRNA (bone marrow) were analyzed. 58 miRNAs overlap in the four miRNA datasets analyzed. Sequentially, those miRNAs present in at least two datasets, were analyzed using miRWalk for the 3'UTR binding target mRNA. The result predicted 258 miRNAs for exacerbated cytokines and chemokines, 266 miRNAs for cell death genes and 148 miRNAs for coagulation cascades. Some miRNAs may simultaneously attenuate inflammatory agents, inhibit cell death genes and key factors of coagulation cascade, consequently preventing tissue damage and coagulation disturbs. Therefore, the MSC-derived EVs due to their heterogeneous cargo are a potential multitarget approach able to improve the survival rates of severe COVID-19 patients.Currently, there are no specific and efficient vaccines or drugs for COVID-19, particularly in severe cases. A wide range of variations in the clinical symptoms of different patients attributed to genomic differences. Therefore, personalized treatments seem to play a critical role in improving these symptoms and even similar conditions. Prompted by the uncertainties in the area of COVID-19 therapies, we reviewed the published papers and concepts to gather and provide useful information to clinicians and researchers interested in personalized medicine and cell-based therapy. One novel aspect of this study focuses on the potential application of personalized medicine in treating severe cases of COVID-19. However, it is theoretical, as any real-world examples of the use of genuinely personalized medicine have not existed yet. Nevertheless, we know that stem cells, especially MSCs, have immune-modulatory effects and can be stored for future personalized medicine applications. This theory has been conjugated with some evidence that we review in the present study. Besides, we discuss the importance of personalized medicine and its possible aspects in COVID-19 treatment, then review the cell-based therapy studies for COVID-19 with a particular focus on stem cell-based therapies as a primary personalized tool medicine. However, the idea of cell-based therapy has not been accepted by several scientific communities due to some concerns of lack of satisfactory clinical studies; still, the MSCs and their clinical outcomes have been revealed the safety and potency of this therapeutic approach in several diseases, especially in the immune-mediated inflammatory diseases and some incurable diseases. Promising outcomes have resulted in that clinical studies are going to continue.We present here the data showing, in standard cultures exposed to atmospheric O2 concentration, that alpha-tocopherol acetate (α-TOA) has a positive impact on primitive cells inside mesenchymal stromal cell (MstroC) population, by maintaining their proliferative capacity. α-TOA decreases the O2 consumption rate of MStroC probably by impacting respiratory chain complex II activity. This action, however, is not associated with a compensatory increase in glycolysis activity, in spite of the fact that the degradation of HIF-1α was decreased in presence of α-TOA. This is in line with a moderate enhancement of mtROS upon α-TOA treatment. However, the absence of glycolysis stimulation implies the inactivity of HIF-1α which might - if it were active - be related to the maintenance of stemness. It should be stressed that α-TOA might act directly on the gene expression as well as the mtROS themselves, which remains to be elucidated. Alpha-tocopherol acetate (α-TOA), a synthetic vitamin E ester, attenuates electron flow through electron transport chain (ETC) which is probably associated with a moderate increase in mtROS in Mesenchymal Stromal Cells. α-TOA action results in enhancement of the proliferative capacity and maintenance of the differentiation potential of the mesenchymal stem and progenitor cells.
Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer is not uncommon. The aim of this study is to examine whether preoperative transthoracic echocardiography is useful for predicting new-onset POAF in esophageal cancer.

In this prospective observational study, we evaluated 200 patients with esophageal cancer who underwent esophagectomy at our hospital between January 2016 and July 2019. Conventional echocardiographic assessment and tissue Doppler imaging were performed before surgery. We investigated the utility of preoperative transthoracic echocardiography for predicting new-onset POAF in esophageal cancer.

New-onset POAF occurred in 51 (25.5%) of 200 patients. POAF was significantly associated with older age (p = 0.007), higher body mass index (p = 0.020), preoperative hypertensive disease (p = 0.021), and lower hemoglobin level (p = 0.028). The incidence of postoperative complications was significantly higher in patients with POAF than in patients without POAF (43.1% vsts with POAF than in patients without POAF (43.1% vs. 24.2%, p = 0.013). Transthoracic echocardiography showed that left atrial diameter (LAD) and E wave/e' wave ratio (E/e') were significantly higher in patients with POAF than in patients without POAF (34.1 vs. 31.3 mm, p  less then  0.001 and 11.6 vs. 10.5, p = 0.003, respectively). Multivariate analysis showed that LAD ≥ 36.0 mm, E/e' ≥ 8.4 are independent risk factors for POAF (odds ratios 2.47 and 3.64; p values 0.035 and 0.027, respectively) CONCLUSIONS Preoperative echocardiographic evaluation is useful for predicting the onset of POAF after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. Risk stratification using LAD and E/e' enables clinicians to identify patients at high risk for POAF before esophagectomy.
