Despite her successful career, she was never promoted to full professor by her academic institutions. Background Patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) undergoing catheter-based AF ablation have lower success rates than those with paroxysmal AF. We compared healthcare use and clinical outcomes between patients according to their AF subtypes. Methods and Results Consecutive patients undergoing AF ablation were prospectively identified from a population-based registry in Ontario, Canada. Via linkage with administrative databases, we performed a retrospective analysis comparing the following outcomes between patients with persistent and paroxysmal AF healthcare use (defined as AF-related hospitalizations/emergency room visits), periprocedural complications, and mortality. Multivariable Poisson modeling was performed to compare the rates of AF-related and all-cause hospitalizations/emergency room visits in the year before versus after ablation. Between April 2012 and March 2016, there were 3768 consecutive patients who underwent first-time AF ablation, of whom 1040 (27.6%) had persistent AF. The mean follow-up was 1329 days. Patients with persistent AF had higher risk of AF-related hospitalization/emergency room visits (hazard ratio [HR], 1.21; 95% CI, 1.09-1.34), mortality (HR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.15-2.63), and periprocedural complications (odds ratio, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.02-1.75) than those with paroxysmal AF. this website In the overall cohort, there was a 48% reduction in the rate of AF-related hospitalization/emergency room visits in the year after versus before ablation (rate ratio [RR], 0.52; 95% CI, 0.48-0.56). This reduction was observed for patients with paroxysmal (RR, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.41-0.50) and persistent (RR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.63-0.87) AF. Conclusions Although patients with persistent AF had higher risk of adverse outcomes than those with paroxysmal AF, ablation was associated with a favorable reduction in downstream AF-related healthcare use, irrespective of AF type.Herein we report a highly regioselective silver(I)-catalyzed intramolecular annulation of alkyne-tethered cyclohexadienones to access meta-substituted phenols with enone functionality, which are difficult to synthesize from conventional methods. The reaction proceeds via intramolecular 1,6-enyne cyclization followed by aromatization and subsequent oxetene ring rearrangement. This strategy has also been compatible with a wide range of C-tethered cyclohexadienones to afford indanes in high yields. The unique functionality of products allows further transformations to expand the diversity.Smoking is a leading cause of lung cancer, accounting for 81% of lung cancer cases. Tobacco smoke contains over 5000 compounds, of which more than 70 have been classified as human carcinogens. Of the many tobacco smoke constituents, 1,3-butadiene (BD) has a high cancer risk index due to its tumorigenic potency and its abundance in cigarette smoke. The carcinogenicity of BD has been attributed to the formation of several epoxide metabolites, of which 1,2,3,4-diepoxybutane (DEB) is the most toxic and mutagenic. DEB is formed by two oxidation reactions carried out by cytochrome P450 monooxygenases, mainly CYP2E1. Glutathione-S-transferase theta 1 (GSTT1) facilitates the conjugation of DEB to glutathione as the first step of its detoxification and subsequent elimination via the mercapturic acid pathway. Human biomonitoring studies have revealed a strong association between GSTT1 copy number and urinary concentrations of BD-mercapturic acids, suggesting that it plays an important role in the metabolism of BD. To determine the extent that GSTT1 genotype affects the susceptibility of individuals to the toxic and genotoxic properties of DEB, GSTT1 negative and GSTT1 positive HapMap lymphoblastoid cell lines were treated with DEB, and the extent of apoptosis and micronuclei (MN) formation was assessed. These toxicological end points were compared to the formation of DEB-GSH conjugates and 1,4-bis-(guan-7-yl)-2,3-butanediol (bis-N7G-BD) DNA-DNA cross-links. GSTT1 negative cell lines were more sensitive to DEB-induced apoptosis as compared to GSTT1 positive cell lines. Consistent with the protective effect of GSH conjugation against DEB-derived apoptosis, GSTT1 positive cell lines formed significantly more DEB-GSH conjugate than GSTT1 negative cell lines. However, GSTT1 genotype did not affect formation of MN or bis-N7G-BD cross-links. These results indicate that GSTT1 genotype significantly influences BD metabolism and acute toxicity.Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) individually display exceptional mechanical properties, but the strength of their mesoscale assemblies such as bundles has a fundamental disconnect, with limited understanding of its scaling. Here we use coarse-grained implementation of a CNT interface with prescribed length distributions and parametrized cross-link density, providing two essential control parameters. It is shown that a linear relationship between strength of the bundles and these control parameters exists, across multiple hierarchies of nanotube interfaces. Furthermore, all geometrical perturbations caused by length distribution and bundle dimensions result in a net stress concentration effect, without influencing the scaling behavior.Microalgae are renewable, sustainable, and economical sources of biofuels and are capable of addressing pressing global demand for energy security. However, two challenging issues to produce high-level biofuels are to separate promising algal strains and protect biofuels from contamination of undesired bacteria, which rely on an economical and high-resolution separation technology. Separation technology based on induced-charge electroosmotic (ICEO) vortices offers excellent promise in economical microalga separation for producing biofuels because of its reconfigurable and flexible profiles and sensitive and precise selectivity. In this work, a practical ICEO vortex device is developed to facilitate high-resolution isolation of rich-lipid microalgae for the first time. We investigate electrokinetic equilibrium states of particles and particle-fluid ICEO effect in binary-particle manipulation. Nanoparticle separation is performed to demonstrate the feasibility and resolution of this device, yielding clear separation.
