The diagnosis of infection by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) presents major challenges. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing is used to diagnose a current infection, but its utility as a reference standard is constrained by sampling errors, limited sensitivity (71% to 98%), and dependence on the timing of specimen collection. Chest imaging tests are being used in the diagnosis of COVID-19 disease, or when RT-PCR testing is unavailable.

To determine the diagnostic accuracy of chest imaging (computed tomography (CT), X-ray and ultrasound) in people with suspected or confirmed COVID-19.

We searched the COVID-19 Living Evidence Database from the University of Bern, the Cochrane COVID-19 Study Register, and The Stephen B. Thacker CDC Library. In addition, we checked repositories of COVID-19 publications. We did not apply any language restrictions. We conducted searches for this review iteration up to 5 May 2020.

We included studies of all designfindings indicate that chest CT is sensitive but not specific for the diagnosis of COVID-19 in suspected patients, meaning that CT may not be capable of differentiating SARS-CoV-2 infection from other causes of respiratory illness. This low specificity could also be the result of the poor sensitivity of the reference standard (RT-PCR), as CT could potentially be more sensitive than RT-PCR in some cases. Because of limited data, accuracy estimates of chest X-ray and ultrasound of the lungs for the diagnosis of COVID-19 should be carefully interpreted. Future diagnostic accuracy studies should avoid cases-only studies and pre-define positive imaging findings. Planned updates of this review will aim to increase precision around the accuracy estimates for CT (ideally with low risk of bias studies); obtain further data to inform accuracy of chest X rays and ultrasound; and continue to search for studies that fulfil secondary objectives to inform the utility of imaging along different diagnostic pathways.Specific tumor uptake of peptide radiopharmaceuticals depends on tumor binding affinity and their radiochemical purity. Several important parameters that influence the 99m Tc-labeling and consequently the radiochemical purity of 6-hydrazinonicotinamide (HYNIC)-conjugated peptide are radionuclide activity, the amount of peptide, the amount of coligands, and the amount of reducing agents (stannous ion). In this review article, we have attempted studying these parameters in the HYNIC-conjugated peptides (somatostatin, cholecystokinin/gastrin, bombesin, and RGD analogs) from a new perspective to obtain most used and optimized radio-stoichiometric relationships. One of the most important results in this review is that for 99m Tc-labeling of HYNIC-conjugated peptides, it is better to consider the most calculated mole ratio between technetium-99m and the peptide (mole ratio of technetium-99m to the peptide 1200-400). The statistical results also show that among these 99m Tc-labeled peptides, the most used and favorable coligand is tricine/EDDA with two to one (21) mole ratio. These optimized radio-stoichiometric relationships, favorable coligand mole ratio, and applicable radiolabeling points can greatly improve the labeling process of the HYNIC-conjugated peptides, by reducing trial and error, increasing specific activity, and saving materials.Pericytes promote vessel stability and their dysfunction causes pathologies due to blood vessel leakage. Previously, we reported that Olfactomedin-like 3 (Olfml3) is a matricellular protein with proangiogenic properties. Here, we explored the role of Olfml3 in a knockout mouse model engineered to suppress this protein. The mutant mice exhibited vascular defects in pericyte coverage, suggesting that pericytes influence blood vessel formation in an Olfml3-dependent manner. Olfml3-deficient mice exhibited abnormalities in the vasculature causing partial lethality of embryos and neonates. Reduced pericyte coverage was observed at embryonic day 12.5 and persisted throughout development, resulting in perinatal death of 35% of Olfml3-deficient mice. Cultured Olfml3-deficient pericytes exhibited aberrant motility and altered pericyte association to endothelial cells. Furthermore, the proliferative response of Olfml3-/- pericytes upon PDGF-B stimulation was significantly diminished. Subsequent experiments revealed that intact PDGF-B signaling, mediated via Olfml3 binding, is required for pericyte proliferation and activation of downstream kinase pathways. Our findings suggest a model wherein pericyte recruitment to endothelial cells requires Olfml3 to provide early instructive cue and retain PDGF-B along newly formed vessels to achieve optimal angiogenesis.The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is a mammal of the Xenarthra Superorder, which inhabits Central, South and North America. Few morphological descriptions are observed in this species, including the respiratory tract; therefore, the objective of this study was to describe morphologically the lower respiratory tract of the nine-banded armadillo. Five animals were dissected, and the macroscopic and microscopic aspects were analysed. In the anatomical analysis, the perfusion technique was performed with vinyl acetate and the fragments of tissue from respiratory organs (trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and pulmonary lobes) were stained with haematoxylin-eosin for visualization under optical microscopy. Containing about 30 cartilage rings, the trachea is lined internally with ciliated pseudostratified epithelial tissue. The lungs are subdivided into lobes by deep interlobar fissures, with two lobes in the right lung and three lobes in the left lung. Microscopically, the primary, secondary and tertiary bronchi have non-ciliated pseudostratified epithelium with goblet cells. It was found that macro- and microscopically the respiratory tract of this species is similar to existing xenarthras and other excavator animals. These data provide subsidies for the clinic and preservation of this species.
Bariatric surgery is by far the most effective treatment option available for successfully achieving and maintaining weight loss in the obese population, but it can also be associated with complications that lead to malnutrition. There is limited data on how enteral nutrition (EN) can be used to provide nutrition support in such cases.

Retrospective review of our Home Enteral Nutrition (HEN) database was conducted from February 2013 to April 2018 to identify patients who received HEN because of bariatric surgery-related complication.

During the study period, 72 patients (86% female, mean age 50.3 ± 11.6 years) initiated HEN because of bariatric surgical complication. Most common bariatric surgery was Roux-en-Y (74%) and most common indication for HEN was malnutrition/failure to thrive (33%). HEN was most commonly provided through nasojejunal feeds and resulted in an average increase in body weight and body mass index from 74.8 kg and 26.5, respectively, before HEN to 76.9 kg and 27.2, respectively, at the end of the HEN period. Through HEN, patients received 22.2 ± 7.9 kcal/kg/d and 1.0 ± 0.3 g/kg/d protein, meeting 94% ± 17% of their energy goals and 95% ± 29% of their protein goals. Vitamin deficiencies were noted in 69% of patients at the time of HEN initiation, which improved to 10% after enteral feeds and appropriate vitamin supplementation.

HEN is safe and effective in treating malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies that might occur as a complication of bariatric surgery, leading to avoidance of parenteral nutrition support in most cases.

There is a promise to make new drugs for antibiotic-resistant strains. Here, we report the antibacterial activity of a new haloarchaea selected from Lut Desert, Iran. A total of 38 isolated halophilic bacteria and archaea were screened for the antagonistic activity test of each strain against other bacterial and archaeal strains. Finally, a strain, recognized as Halarchaeum acidiphilum, with a fast grown strain and high antagonistic potential against different strains was identified by morphological, physiological, and molecular characteristics. The halocin was produced in a semisolid submerge medium and partially purified by heat treatments and molecular weight ultrafiltration cutoff (3, 50, and 10 kDa). It was a cell-free, heat-resistant (85°C for 2 h) protein with a molecular mass near to 20 kDa produced at the endpoint of logarithmic growth. The molecular weight of halocin was 17 kDa, and indicated no apparent homology with known halocins, suggesting that this might be a new halocin. Previous data suggest that bone demineralization may promote bone graft consolidation as well as proliferation and differentiation of pre-osteoblasts, but the biological mechanisms involved in this process need to be clarified. This study investigated the effects of bone demineralization with citric acid (CA) and tetracycline (TCN) on the repair of onlay bone grafts.

Onlay bone grafts were performed on the calvaria of 126 Wistar rats. The contacting surfaces between bone graft and receptor bone bed were demineralized for 15, 30, and 60 seconds with TCN (50mg/mL), or 10% CA, (pH 1), constituting the following test groups (n=18) TCN15, TCN30, TCN60, CA15, CA30, and CA60. Control grafts (C) were performed without demineralization (n=18). After 7, 30, and 60 days, biopsies were obtained for quantitative and qualitative histological analysis (a=6).

Demineralization accelerated the bone repair early from 7 days of healing. Higher percentage area of newly formed bone was observed in CA15 and TCN60 groups when compared to C in all evaluation periods (P=0.02). At 30 days, C specimens had lower percentage of consolidated surfaces than TCN60, TCN30 and CA15 (P=0.0015). At 60 days, CA15, CA60, and TCN60 presented bone surfaces almost completely filled by newly formed bone, against about 75% in C specimens (P=0.0015).

This study examines the effect of the range of salinity on the trade-off between growth and feeding intensity of Atherinella brasiliensis from two tropical estuaries (positive and hypersaline). To investigate the effects of salinity, we hypothesized that hypersalinity negatively affects foraging intensity, consumption and prey selection by the Brazilian silverside, leading to differences in body condition. Sampling was carried out using the beach seine method in two areas of the estuaries (upper and lower zone) during rainy and dry periods. A total of 2549 stomachs (1124 for the positive estuary and 1425 for the hypersaline estuary) were examined, and the results indicated a dissimilarity of 92.7% of the diet between environments. In the positive estuary, there was more predation on Calanoida, Gastropoda, Hymenoptera, Ceratopogonidae larvae and Decapoda larvae, while Alga and plant-material characterized the diet in the hypersaline estuary.
