In multicellular organisms, growth is defined by those processes that allow an organ to increase in mass, namely cell proliferation - that increases the number of cells - and cell expansion - that increases their volume. For an organ to achieve a functional shape and a characteristic final size both these processes need to be tightly coordinated. In roots, these processes stand behind root primary growth, which results in lengthening of the root along its longitudinal axis, and secondary growth, which results in an increase of the root thickness. In this review, we will analyze latest advances in the study of the molecular mechanisms involved in root primary growth, focusing on the model species Arabidopsis thaliana, where some molecular factors and networks responsible for regulating its self-organized primary growth have been identified.
Spinal fusion surgery is associated with severe postoperative pain. We examined whether bilateral ultrasound-guided erector spinae plane block could alleviate postoperative pain in patients undergoing lumbar spinal fusion.

Blinded, randomized, controlled study.

Sixty patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists grade I or II scheduled for lumbar spinal fusion surgery were randomized into the erector spinae plane block group (ESPB group) and the control group in a 11 ratio.

Pre-operative ultrasound-guided bilateral erector spinae plane block was performed in the ESPB group, while sham subcutaneous infiltration was performed in the control group.

The primary outcome was pain intensity at rest within 12h postoperatively using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Secondary outcomes included NRS pain scores at rest and on movement, postoperative opioid consumption and proportions of patients requiring opioid during thundergoing lumbar spinal fusion.The objective of this paper is to determine the importance of integrating peak demand mitigation and future energy pricing structures for process modelling of conventional water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) when evaluating energy cost and control strategies. The well-established benchmark simulation model (BSM2) is used to monitor energy usage, and a detailed holistic study of different flow streams is performed in order to establish potential opportunities for flexible control of WRRF energy demand. Secondly, a detailed framework is introduced to optimize scheduling control strategies for the reject water stream while considering peak electricity demand avoidance as well as completing a comprehensive energy cost model based on current and anticipated future energy tariff structures. The reject water scheduling strategies, without other active controls (e.g. aeration), revealed 63.4% average peak demand mitigation and €10,755 cumulative annual energy cost savings on a 100k population equivalent WRRF without a deterioration in effluent quality. Analysis of different reject water scheduling control strategies shows that reject water scheduling can be an effective tool for energy cost optimisation under alternative electricity tariff structures. These strategies also deliver electricity peak demand mitigation.Plants encounter diverse stressors simultaneously with changing environmental factors. The combined effect of different types of stresses can have a wide range of effects on plants. The present study demonstrated that various stress factors such as the combination of chemical elicitors, namely paraquat (PQ), methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and methyl-β-cyclodextrin (CD), light exposure versus darkness, and mechanical shearing stress affected the defence response in peanut hairy root culture. The antioxidant activities were dramatically increased at all time points after hairy roots were subjected to elicitation with PQ + MeJA + CD under root cutting in both light and dark conditions. The stilbene compounds were highly increased in the culture medium after elicitor treatment of uncut hairy roots under dark conditions. In contrast to the high stilbene contents detected in culture medium under dark conditions, the transcription of the stilbene biosynthesis genes PAL, RS and RS3 was enhanced by the effect of light in uncut hairy root tissues. The antioxidant enzyme genes APX, GPX and CuZn-SOD of uncut and cut hairy roots were more highly expressed in light conditions than in dark conditions. The pathogenesis-related protein (PR)-encoding genes chitinase, PR4A, PR5 and PR10 of uncut hairy roots were highly expressed in response to light conditions compared to dark conditions at all time points. Recent evidence of the production of antioxidant stilbene compounds and defence response genes has implicated plant protective functions through defence responses under different stress challenges. Plant responses might therefore be regulated by the coordination of different signal responses through dynamic pathways.The study tested the function of exogenous spermine (Spm) in resisting salinity-alkalinity stress in tomato seedlings and found that tomato Spm synthase gene (SlSPMS) was involved in this regulation. The tomato seedlings cultivated in normal conditions or salinity-alkalinity conditions were irrigated with 100 ml one strength Hoagland nutrient solution 100 ml mixed solution (5 ml 300 mmol/L NaCl, 45 ml 300 mmol/L Na2SO4, 45 ml 300 mmol/L NaHCO3, and 5 ml 300 mmol/L Na2CO3 (pH = 8.90)) every 2 days, respectively. The 0.5 mM Spm pretreatment improved superoxide dismutase (SOD; EC 1.15.1.1) activity, catalase (CAT; EC 1.11.1.6) activity, ascorbate peroxidase (APX; EC 1.11.1.11) activity, and glutathione reductase (GR; EC 1.6.4.2) activity and decreased endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and relative electrical conductivity (REC) in tomato leaves. Na+ content declined and K+ concentration rose in tomato seedlings when pre-treated with Spm. However the results showed that under salinity-alkalinity stress, silencing of SlSPMS with virus-induced gene silencing had lower antioxidant enzyme activities and higher Na+ content and lower K+ content than normal tomato seedlings, meaning that they had low salinity-alkalinity tolerance. Exogenous Spm could not reconstruct the tolerance to salinity-alkalinity stress in SlSPMS gene-silencing tomato seedlings. Taken together, exogenous Spm could induce the expression level of SlSPMS, which regulated the antioxidant enzyme system and ion homeostasis in tomato seedlings living in salinity-alkalinity environment, thereby improving the ability of tomato seedlings to resist salinity-alkalinity stress.Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging lethal tick-borne disease that has been widely prevalent in East Asia in recent years, and raised an important public health problem in China. However, a comprehensive and thorough understanding of the current SFTS epidemic areas in Shandong Province is not available. Accordingly, a descriptive analysis was applied to explore the demographic and spatio-temporal features of SFTS cases in Shandong Province from 2010 to 2015. The division between epidemic areas and non-epidemic areas was given by maximum entropy niche model (MaxEnt) based on environmental factors such as temperature and precipitation. There were 1,786 SFTS cases between 2010 and 2015 in Shandong, mainly involving middle-aged and elderly individuals (age40-80) and farmers (84.6 %). May-October was the high-incidence period and the SFTS cases were mostly clustered in the central and eastern regions of Shandong Province. In light of MaxEnt, 3 specific environmental features between dichotomous areas were identified, including 1) most epidemic areas are covered by acidic soils (Constituent ratio 63.8 %) while 29.1 % coverage appears in non-epidemic areas, 2) compared with non-epidemic areas, the identical kinds of agricultural areas accounted for a higher constituent ratio (64.9 % vs. 42.7 %), and 3) lower level of annual temperature in epidemic areas compared to non-epidemic areas [Median 13.2℃ vs. 14.2℃; (25th IQR, 75th IQR) (12.5, 13.7) vs. (13.6, 14.9)]. Our study suggests middle-aged and elderly farmers are high-risk population to be focused on in future prevention and acidic soils, agricultural activities as well lower temperature that may be related to increased SFTS incidence.Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common arthropod-borne disease in Europe and North America and is caused by members of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl) species complex. These bacteria are transmitted by ixodid tick vectors and therefore human LB risk is influenced by the prevalence and distribution of Bbsl genospecies within tick vectors throughout the wild. These distributions can easily change over spatiotemporal scales and, to understand LB risk fully, up to date information on prevalence and distribution of Bbsl is required. The last survey of Bbsl in southern Germany, including parts of the Munich metropolitan area, was completed in 2006 and new data is needed. Ixodid ticks were collected in seven plots located in and around Munich, Germany, from March to July 2019 and were screened for Bbsl. AMG 487 CXCR antagonist Borrelia burgdorferi s. l. positive ticks (52 adults, 158 nymphs) were found in all plots and adults (0-61.5 % Bbsl positive/plot) and nymphs (17.4-59.5 % Bbsl positive/plot) did not differ significantly in their overall Bbsl prevalence. The number of Bbsl positive nymphs did vary significantly between plots but the number of positive adults did not. In total, six Bbsl genospecies were located with B. afzelii and B. garinii dominating. Additionally, the relapsing-fever species B. miyamotoi was found in two sampling plots. Our results highlight the variability in Bbsl prevalence and genospecies distribution over short geographic distances and aid in understanding LB risk in and around the Munich metropolitan area.
High total cholesterol (TC) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) could be major risk factors for cardiovascular disease burden among high risk populations especially in South Asians. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to quantify the effects of coconut oil compared with other oils and fats on cardio-metabolic parameters.

PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science were systematically searched. The main outcomes included are lipid and glycemic parameters. Subgroup analyses were performed to evaluate individual comparisons of vegetable oils and animal fat with coconut oil. Data were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis.

Coconut oil consumption significantly increased TC by 15.42mg/dL (95% CI, 8.96-21.88, p<0.001), LDL-C by 10.14mg/dL (95% CI, 4.44-15.84, p<0.001) and high density lipoprorein cholesterol (HDL-C) by 2.61mg/dL (95% CI, 0.95-4.26, p=0.002), and significantly decreased glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) by 0.39mg/dL (95% CI,-0.50 to-0.27, p<0.001) but, it had no effects on triglycerides (TG), (4.25mg/dL; 95% CI,-0.49-8.99, p=0.08) when compared with the control group. Sub-group analysis demonstrated that coconut oil significantly increased TC and LDL-C over corn, palm, soybean and safflower oils and not over olive oil. Compared with butter, coconut oil showed a better pattern in cardio-metabolic markers by significantly increasing HDL-C (4.38mg/dL, 95% CI, 0.40 to 8.36, p=0.03) and decreasing LDL-C (-14.90mg/dL, 95% CI,-23.02 to-6.77, p<0.001).

Our results suggest that coconut oil consumption results in significantly higher TC, LDL-C and HDL-C than other oils. Consumption of coconut oil can be one of the risk factors for CVDs in South Asians.
