The mechanism of action of these compounds still needs to be determined, although anthraquinones might enhance the production of toxic oxygen metabolites as it has been suggested for various protists (e.g. Leishmania, Plasmodium, Trypanosoma). Our research is the first to explore anti-amebic effects of Chinese rhubarb leaves' extract and isolated/synthetic anthraquinones on pathogenic Entamoeba. © 2020 The Authors. To test the hypothesis that delayed/impaired uterine involution could be associated with oxinflammation, we studied the progression of the uterine involution in association with some biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in clinically healthy mares (N = 26) during early postpartum. The examination of the reproductive tract was performed on Days 7 and 21 after foaling. Uterine involution was assessed considering a) the increase of the gravid uterine horn diameter (GUHD) compared with diameter recorded before pregnancy during the previous breeding season; b) the level of endometrial edema (EE); c) the degree of accumulation of intrauterine fluid (IUFA); d) the status of the cervix (CS). Inflammation and oxidative stress were studied by measuring serum amyloid A (SAA), cortisol, DHEA, AOPP, protein carbonyl groups, malondialdheyde (MDA) and thiols in plasma on Days 7 and 21. By Day 21 after parturition, a significant improvement (P less then 0.01) was observed for GUHD and EE; while IUFA increased in six animals. Plasma SAA and DHEA concentrations were higher when the clinical parameters indicated a lower degree of uterine involution. On Day 7, the cortisol/DHEA ratio was lower in animals with higher degree of EE. Plasma AOPP and MDA concentrations were significantly lower (P less then 0.05) in animals with the lower GUHD. On Day 21, plasma MDA concentrations were significantly lower (P less then 0.05) in animals with the lower IUFA. Our data suggest that a mild condition of inflammation and oxidative stress occur in mares with delayed/impaired uterine involution. © 2020 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.Leptospermum petersonii is a native Australian medicinal and aromatic plant. This study was designed to evaluate the influence of solvents and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) parameters including time, temperature, and sonication power on the yield of phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity from lemon scented tea tree leaves. Extraction efficiency of the optimal UAE conditions were compared with that of shaking water bath technique. The results show that extraction solvents significantly affect extraction yield of phenolic compounds and antioxidant properties, and 50% acetone in water was found to be the most suitable solvent. The UAE optimal conditions were 60 min, 50 °C and sonication power of 200 W. Under these optimal conditions the yields of total phenolics, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins were 98.91 ± 1.20 (mg GAE/g DW), 76.12 ± 0.79 (mg CE/g DW), 117.71 ± 2.18 (mg CE/g DW), respectively. Antioxidant properties from four assays including FRAP, CUPRAC, ABTS and DPPH were 581.29 ± 14.23, 5534.87 ± 19.56, 1636.18 ± 4.11, and 889.29 ± 20.68 (mM TE/g DW) respectively. The UAE extraction technique was found to be more efficient in extraction of total phenolics and antioxidant capacity in comparison with conventional shaking water bath extraction. This study also observed a strong correlation between phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacities. All three phenolic compound groups (TPC, TFC, and Pro.A) were contributed to both free radical scavenging and ion reducing properties in the lemon scented tea tree leaves extract. However, the order of the phenolic groups was TPC > Pro.A > TFC for antioxidant properties. © 2020 Published by Elsevier Ltd.Hypercholesterolemia is a metabolic disorder associated with atherosclerosis. This study aimed to investigate the effects of omega-3 and/or coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) on hypercholesterolemia-induced atherosclerosis. Rats were divided into five groups; (1) served as the negative control, (2) served as hypercholesterolemic (HC) control, (3) HC-rats administrated omega-3 orally, (4) HC-rats administrated CoQ10 orally, and (5) HC-rats administered the combination treatment of both omega-3 and CoQ10. Lipid profile was assayed and cardiovascular risk indices were calculated. Serum levels of Adiponectin (APN) and creatine kinase (CK-MB) were determined using ELISA. Besides, oxidative stress markers, malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO) and glutathione (GSH) were assayed in the heart homogenate. Histopathological investigation of the aortae and heart tissues were investigated. The results revealed that atherogenic HC-rats demonstrated a significant elevation in lipid profiles, except for HDL-C, along with decreased levels of APN, but increased CK-MB activities. Hypercholesterolemia increased lipid peroxidation, reduced NO production, and decreased GSH content in the cardiac tissue. Treatment of atherogenic HC-rats with omega-3 and/or CoQ10 improved dyslipidemia and ameliorated most of the HC-induced biochemical and histopathological changes. The histological observations of aortae and cardiac tissues validated our biochemical results. We concluded that the combined treatment of nutraceuticals such as omega-3 and CoQ10 demonstrated the best outcome, demonstrating their anti-hyperlipidemic, cardioprotective, and atheroprotective potentials. Together, this study supports a beneficial role of dietary co-administration of omega-3 and CoQ10 in obese patients who are prone to develop cardiovascular disorders. © 2020 The Author. Published by Elsevier Ltd.Effect of sandblasting of the copper electrode structures before deposition of gold thin film for micro electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system has been studied experimentally. The comparison has been performed on the unmodified copper electrodes and the sandblasted electrodes before deposition of gold layer, using structural analysis while their performance in EIT system has been measured and analyzed. The results of scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy show that the sandblasting of the electrodes results in the deposition of gold film with smaller grain size and uniformly, comparing to the unmodified structure. The measurement of impedance shows that the sandblasting will increase the double layer capacitance of electrode structure which improves the impedance measurement accordingly. © 2020 The Authors.Herein we investigated whether inherent differences in mitochondrial activity in mouse pluripotent cells could be used to identify populations with an intrinsic ability to differentiate into primordial germ cells (PGCs). Notably, we determined that stem cells sorted based on differences in mitochondrial membrane activity exhibited altered germline differentiation capacity, with low-mitochondrial membrane potential associated with an increase in PGC-like cells. This specification was not further enhanced by hypoxia. We additionally noted differences between these populations in metabolism, transcriptome, and cell-cycle. These data contribute to a growing body of work demonstrating that pluripotent cells exhibit a large range of mitochondrial activity, which impacts cellular function and differentiation potential. Furthermore, pluripotent cells possess a subpopulation of cells with an improved ability to differentiate into the germ lineage that can be identified based on differences in mitochondrial membrane potential. © 2020 The Authors.People with stressful situations tend to experience lower psychological well-being highlighting the importance of involvement in activities or strategies that have the potential to promote recovery after stressful work situations. This study aimed to validate the Nepalese version of the Recovery Experience Questionnaire (REQ-N), which evaluates how individuals unwind and recuperate from work in their leisure time. Registered nurses of three university hospitals (N = 438) in Nepal were asked to complete the REQ-N voluntarily and the data was analyzed using SPSS-20 and AMOS. Reliability was examined by using the Cronbach alpha coefficient. Factorial validity was examined by using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Convergent validity was examined by examining the relationships with psychological distress, overall health, happiness, job performance and job satisfaction. find more Cronbach's alpha coefficients for four subscales ranged from 0.67 to 0.70. A hypothesized four-factor model fitted better to the data. As expected, mastery and control subscales correlated with psychological distress, overall health, happiness, job performance, and job satisfaction. However, psychological detachment subscale correlated with poor health and relaxation subscale correlated with low job satisfaction. The REQ-N displayed an acceptable level of internal-consistency reliability. The theory-based four-factor structure and the association with psychological distress, overall health, happiness, job performance and job satisfaction for mastery and control experience subscales supported the construct validity (including factor-based validity). However, some of the model fit statistics could not meet the minimum recommendations suggesting a need of a large study involving a heterogeneous population. Also, unexpected findings for psychological detachment and relaxation may reflect the culture and values of Nepalese people and need further research. © 2020 The Authors. In this work, the encapsulation of rice bran oil extracted using supercritical CO2 has been studied. In the first stage, the emulsification process by high pressure homogenization was studied and optimized. The effect of the working pressure (60-150 MPa), the composition of the carrier (mixtures of pea protein isolate (PPI) and maltodextrin (MD), from 50 to 90% of PPI) and the carrier to oil ratio (2-4) on the emulsion droplet size (EDS) was studied. To minimize the EDS, moderate pressures (114 MPa), a carrier composed mainly by PPI (64%) and carrier to oil ratios around 3.2 were required. The emulsion obtained in the optimal conditions (EDS = 189 ± 3nm) was dried using different technologies (spray-drying, PGSS-drying and freeze drying). The supercritical CO2 based drying process (PGSS) provided spherical particles that resulted in the smallest average size (but broader distribution) and lower encapsulation efficiency (53 ± 2%). © 2020 The Author(s).Tannery wastewater presents high concentrations of organic load and pollutant recalcitrant molecules (e.g. tannins), which reduce the efficiency of biological treatment processes. Recent studies showed that several fungal species and strains are effective in the degradation of tannins. However, high bacterial load can negatively affect fungal growth, reducing system stability and degradation performances. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of the introduction of bacterivorous grazers (ciliates and/or rotifers) in batch scale experiments using fungi to remove Tara tannin, i.e. to check the potential synergistic effect between fungi and bacterivorous grazers in the degradation of recalcitrant compounds. In this context, the ciliated grazers Paramecium calkinsi, Tetrahymena sp., Pseudovorticella sp., and the rotifer Lecane inermis, preliminary selected according to their ability to grow in a solution prepared with Tara tannin, were separately tested. Activated sludge, including a complex mixture of native grazers, was used as experimental control.
