Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients with severe disease had a high mortality rate. It's imperative to identify risk factors associated with disease progression and prognosis. Immune responses played an important role in the host's defense against the virus. We studied the dynamics of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) in relation to the clinical outcome in COVID-19 patients in intensive care unit (ICU).

This cohort included 342 COVID-19 patients who were admitted to ICU between February 1 and May 30, 2020, with 178 having follow-up PBL analysis. The patients were divided into a group that survived and an expired group. PBL analysis was performed by flow cytometry.

At time of initial flow analysis, there were no statistically significant differences in lymphocyte, T-cell and subsets, B-cell or natural killer (NK) cell counts between the 2 groups. However, during the ICU course, the surviving group demonstrated a full recovery of CD3+ T-cells, CD4+ T-cells, and CD8+ T-cells, with no significant change in B-cells, and a slight upward trend in NK-cells. In contrast, the expired group showed no recovery in T-cells (and subsets) and no significant changes in B-cells and NK-cells. We identified the earliest time points and cut-off values for T-cell subsets that predict clinical outcomes.

The results of this study suggest that evaluation of PBL in COVID-19 patients could be valuable in the study of the immune responses to the disease and the prognostication of outcome.

Little is known though about how the pandemic has impacted on supporting, managing and governing events in municipal (i.e., local) authorities as key stakeholders, nor how events have featured in the opening-up of localities. This paper reports on empirical research with senior events officers for local authorities in the UK on these key knowledge gaps. Specifically, it examines events officers' unfolding experiences of the pandemic. The paper points to unpreparedness for a crisis of this scale and magnitude, and the roles of innovation, adaptation and co-production in the emergent response. It highlights the transformative nature of the pandemic through reconsiderations of the purpose of public sector involvement in events and, from a policy perspective, how relatively smaller-scale, more agile and lower-risk arts events and performances can figure in local recovery. Finally, while the effects on, and response of, the body corporate (the local authority) to crises is an obvious focus, it is important to recognise those of the individuals who manage the response and drive change.Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most diagnosed cancer among men. Targeted PCa screening may decrease PCa-specific mortality. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is the most reliable and widely accepted tumor biomarker for screening and monitoring PCa status. However, in many settings, quantification of serum PSA requires access to centralized laboratories. In this study, we describe a proof-of-concept rapid test combined with a highly portable Cube™ reader for quantification of total PSA from a drop of serum within 20 min. Dactolisib We demonstrated the application of gold nanoshells as a label for lateral flow assay with significant increase in the measured colorimetric signal intensity to achieve five times lower detection limit when compared to the traditionally used 40 nm gold nanosphere labels, without a need for any additional signal amplification steps. We first optimized and evaluated the performance of the assay with commercially available total PSA calibrators. For initial validation with commercially available ACCESS Hybritech PSA calibrator, a detection range of 0.5-150 ng/mL was achieved. We compared the performance of our total PSA test with IMMULITE analyzer for quantification of total PSA in archived human serum samples. On preliminary testing with archived serums samples and comparison with IMMULITE total PSA assay, a correlation of 0.95 (p less then .0001) was observed. The highly portable quantitative screening test for PSA described in this study has the potential to make PCa screening more accessible where diagnostic labs and automated immunoassay systems are not available, to reduce therapeutic turnaround time, to streamline clinical care, and to direct patient care for both initial screening and for post-treatment monitoring of patients.COVID-19 is a pandemic disease that began to rapidly spread in the US, with the first case detected on January 19, 2020, in Washington State. March 9, 2020, and then quickly increased with total cases of 25,739 as of April 20, 2020. Although most people with coronavirus 81%, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will have little to mild symptoms, others may rely on a ventilator to breathe or not at all. SEIR models have broad applicability in predicting the outcome of the population with a variety of diseases. However, many researchers use these models without validating the necessary hypotheses. Far too many researchers often "overfit" the data by using too many predictor variables and small sample sizes to create models. Models thus developed are unlikely to stand validity check on a separate group of population and regions. The researcher remains unaware that overfitting has occurred, without attempting such validation. In the paper, we present a combination algorithm that combines similar days features selection based on the region using Xgboost, K-Means, and long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks to construct a prediction model (i.e., K-Means-LSTM) for short-term COVID-19 cases forecasting in Louisana state USA. The weighted k-means algorithm based on extreme gradient boosting is used to evaluate the similarity between the forecasts and past days. The results show that the method with K-Means-LSTM has a higher accuracy with an RMSE of 601.20 whereas the SEIR model with an RMSE of 3615.83.The raging COVID-19 pandemic accentuates the urgent and compelling need for non-contact fingerprinting biometric authentication devices to mitigate the transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and other contagious infections. Current approaches to contactless fingerprinting scanners suffer limitations ranging from poor compatibility with two-dimensional equivalent touch-based fingerprint images to perspective distortions, inconstant resolution, motion blur images and low correlation factors. Herein, these constraints are tackled by implementing a system that enables the positioning of the target finger(s) at fixed vertical and horizontal distances away from the camera lens without the physical contact of the fingers with the device framework during scanning. A high-precision fingerprint pattern recognition of up to 97.51% correlation factor has been achieved, using this contactless method, by varying the background illuminating light and implementing two-dimensional imaging techniques and near-constant resolution. Additionally, a convenient contactless fingerprint acquisition process is reinforced through a unique architectural design.
From February 2020, both urban and rural Ireland witnessed the rapid proliferation of the COVID-19 disease throughout its counties. During this period, the national COVID-19 responses included stay-at-home directives issued by the state, subject to varying levels of enforcement.

In this paper, we present a new method to assess and rank the causes of Ireland COVID-19 deaths as it relates to mobility activities within each county provided by Google while taking into consideration the epidemiological confirmed positive cases reported per county. We used a network structure and rank propagation modelling approach using Personalised PageRank to reveal the importance of each mobility category linked to cases and deaths. Then a novel feature-selection method using relative prominent factors finds important features related to each county's death. Finally, we clustered the counties based on features selected with the network results using a customised network clustering algorithm for the research problem.

Our allustrated by the network results aligns soundly with county socio-economic and demographic features. The novel feature selection and clustering method presented clusters useful to policymakers, managers of the health sector, politicians and even sociologists. Finally, each county has a different impact on the national total.
Midwives' perceptions of Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) play an important role in promoting quality of care. This study aimed to explore the awareness and performance of Iranian midwives of RMC during childbirth.

A cross-sectional study was carried out from November to December 2020 to evaluate 130 midwives' awareness and performance of RMC during childbirth at four public hospitals in Urmia province, Iran. Participants were midwives who were working in the labor unit and had at least one year of work experience. The Midwives' Knowledge and Practice Scale on Respectful Maternity Care was used to assess midwives' awareness and performance. The quality assessment of questionnaires was based on the mean for each item. A multivariate linear regression approach was developed to evaluate the relationship between midwives' age, academic education level plus occupational information and their awareness and performance of RMC.

This study revealed that Iranian midwives had good awareness but fair performance of RMC. The mean scores of the overall awareness and performance of RMC were 36.07±10.13 and 75.47±35.4, respectively. Midwives' performance on two domains was fair including 'Giving emotional support' and 'Providing safe care'. The results of multivariate linear regression analysis showed a significant negative relationship between job satisfaction and midwives' performance on RMC. Also work experience plus a Master's degree in midwifery had positive significant effects on midwives' awareness along with performance on RMC (p<0.05).

Promoting respectful maternity care requires essential interpersonal and communication skills and supportive attitudes from midwives.

The pro-inflammatory immune response underlies severe cases of COVID-19. Antigens of the Duffy blood group systems are receptors for pro-inflammation chemokines. The
c.-67T>C gene variation silences the expression of Duffy antigens on erythrocytes and individuals presenting this variant in homozygosity have impaired inflammatory response control. Our aim was to evaluate the association between the
c.-67T>C and the severity of COVID-19.

This was a retrospective single-center case-control study, enrolling 164 participants who were divided into four groups 1) Death COVID-19 patients who died during hospitalization; 2) Hospital Discharge COVID-19 patients who were discharged for home after hospitalizations; 3) Convalescent Plasma Donors COVID-19 patients who were not hospitalized, and; 4) Controls patients with diagnosis other than COVID-19. Patients were genotyped for the
c.-67T>C (
allele) and the frequency of individuals presenting the altered allele was compared between the groups.

The groups significantly differed in terms of the percentage of patients presenting at least one
allele 36.
