Women living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa are at increased risk to develop cervical cancer (CC), which is caused by persistent infection with 13 oncogenic human papilloma viruses (HR-HPVs). It is important to accurately identify and target HIV-positive women at highest risk to develop CC for early therapeutic intervention.

A total of 2,134 HIV+ and HIV- women from South-West Tanzania were prospectively screened for cervical cancer and precancerous lesions. Women with cervical cancer (n=236), high- and low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL n=68, LSIL n=74), and without lesion (n=426) underwent high-resolution HPV genotyping.

Eighty percent of women who were diagnosed with HSIL or LSIL were living with HIV. Any lesion, young age, HIV status, and depleted CD4 T cell counts were independent risk factors for HPV infections, which were predominantly caused by HR-HPV types. While multiple HR-HPV type infections were predominant in HIV+ women with HSIL, single-type infections predominated in HIV+ CC cases (p=0.0006). HPV16, 18, and 45 accounted for 85% (68/80) and 75% (82/110) of HIV+ and HIV- CC cases, respectively. Of note, HPV35, the most frequent HPV type in HSIL-positive women living with HIV, was rarely detected as a single-type infection in HSIL and cancer cases.

HPV16, 18, and 45 should receive special attention for molecular diagnostic algorithms during CC prevention programs for HIV+ women from sub-Saharan Africa. JNKIN8 HPV35 may have a high potential to induce HSIL in women living with HIV, but less potential to cause cervical cancer in single-type infections.

It is currently treated by surgical resection supplemented by radiotherapy, although the resistance of glioma cells to radiation limits the therapeutic outcomes. The aim of the present study was to determine the potential radiosensitizing effects of borneol and the underlying mechanisms. We found that borneol administration along with radiotherapy significantly inhibited the growth of primary glioma cells in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, borneol markedly increased the number of autophagosomes in the glioma cells, which coincided with increased expression of beclin-1 and LC3. And the combination of borneol and radiation exposure significantly decreased the expression levels of HIF-1α, mTORC1 and eIF4E. In addition, silencing mTORC1 and eIF4E upregulated Beclin-1 and LC3 and decreased the expression of HIF-1α, thereby inhibiting tumor cell proliferation. Our findings suggest that borneol sensitizes glioma cells to radiation by inducing autophagy via inhibition of the mTORC1/eIF4E/HIF-1α regulatory axis.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of preoperative and postoperative malnutrition on postoperative short- and long-term outcomes for ampullary carcinoma after pancreatoduodenectomy (PD).

Data were collected retrospectively from 511 patients with ampullary carcinoma who underwent PD between June 2012 and June 2019. Nutritional status before and at 3, 6, and 12 months after operation was assessed by the scored Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA). The patients were classified into well-nourished, moderately malnourished, and severely malnourished group according to the PG-SGA score. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to adjust baseline characteristics between preoperative group A (well-nourished and moderately malnourished group) and group B (severely malnourished group). After PSM, clinicopathological variables and postoperative complications were compared between the two groups. Univariate and multivariate Cox analysis was also conducted to investigate the pry, the preoperative malnutrition was closely related to postoperative complications.

Coexistence of cancer and COVID-19 is associated with worse outcomes. However, the studies on cancer-related characteristics associated with worse COVID-19 outcomes have shown controversial results. The objective of the study was to evaluate cancer-related characteristics associated with invasive mechanical ventilation use or in-hospital mortality in patients with COVID-19 admitted to intensive care unit (ICU).

We designed a cohort multicenter study including adults with active cancer admitted to ICU due to COVID-19. Seven cancer-related characteristics (cancer status, type of cancer, metastasis occurrence, recent chemotherapy, recent immunotherapy, lung tumor, and performance status) were introduced in a multilevel logistic regression model as first-level variables and hospital was introduced as second-level variable (random effect). Confounders were identified using directed acyclic graphs.

We included 274 patients. Required to undergo invasive mechanical ventilation were 176 patients (64.2%) and nonel mortality but not with mechanical ventilation use. Cancer status, cancer type, metastatic tumor, lung cancer, and recent chemotherapy or immunotherapy were not associated with invasive mechanical ventilation use or in-hospital mortality.
Fertility-sparing treatment for young women with atypical endometrial hyperplasia (AEH) and early endometrial cancer (EC) is a difficult challenge. Insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are two potentially crucial, but currently enigmatic factors in the recurrence of AEH and early EC patients. In this study we attempt to elucidate these factors.

A retrospective study was conducted from January 2010 to December 2019. Risk factors for recurrence and complete remission time after recurrence (RCR time) were investigated. ROC curves were built to estimate the accuracy of the metabolic characteristics and Kaplan-Meier (K-M) analysis was used to calculate recurrence-free survival (RFS) for patients with various IR or MetS statuses.

= 0.005) were all significantly associated with recurrence and longer RCR time. Among these factors, IR and MetS were determined to be two independent risk factors for recurrence. Moreover, using IR and MetS as markers significantly improved the diagnostic accuracy of recurrence for fertility-sparing treatment patients (AUC = 0.818,
0.05) and may play synergistic roles in suppressing treatment. K-M analysis indicated both metabolic features played important roles in RFS (
0.05).

We aimed to develop the tumor budding (TB) score and to explore the association between the TB score and overall survival (OS) in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).

In this retrospective study, 130 consecutive patients with PDAC underwent surgical resection between July 2016 and March 2019. The location and counts of TB were assessed based on the digitalized whole slide hematoxylin and eosin images. The TB score was achieved using the Cox regression equation. The cutoff point for the TB score was determined by X-tile. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were used to analyze the association between the TB score and OS.

The TB score was 0.49 (range=0-1.08), and the best cutoff for the TB score was 0.62. The duration of survival in individuals with a low TB score [median=21.8months, 95% confidence interval (CI)=15.43-25.50] was significantly longer than that in those with a high TB score (median=11.33months, 95% CI=9.8-14.22). Univariate analysis revealed that the TB score was significantly associated with OS [hazard ratio (HR)=2.71, 95% CI=1.48-4.96,
=0.001]. Multivariate analysis revealed a strong and independent association between the TB score and OS (HR=2.35, 95% CI=1.27-4.33,
=0.03). The high TB score group had a 2.14 times higher mortality than the low TB score group.

The Gustave Roussy Immune Score (GRIm-Score) was originally designed to select cancer patients for immunotherapy, and later was reported to be a novel prognostic scoring system in lung cancer and esophageal cancer. This study was aimed to determine the prognostic role and predictive performance of GRIm-Score in colorectal cancer (CRC) CRC patients.

We conducted a single-institution study of 1,579 adult CRC patients receiving surgical removal, and those patients were divided into low GRIm-Score group (scores 0, 1) and high GRIm-Score group (scores 2, 3). Propensity score matching (PSM) was executed to balance the potential confounding factors between the two groups. Survival and time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (Td-ROC) analyses were applied to depict the prognostic role and predictive significance of GRIm-Score in CRC patients.

There were 200 cases CRC patients in high GRIm-Score group and 1,379 cases in low GRIm-Score group. CRC patients with high GRIm-Score correspond with higher level of CEA, CA125, and inflammatory indexes, such as NLR, PLR, SII, PNI, and ALRI.
