BACKGROUND The measurement of the water and oil content in olive pomace is crucial for controlling the olive-oil extraction process. The use of near-infrared (NIR) spectra could allow the measurement of the oil and water content in olive pomace. RESULTS Partial least squares for pomace oil content on a dry basis reached an error of 2.5% (±0.5). Principal component regression for pomace oil content on a wet basis reached an error of 3.7% (±0.5). Both were suitable for quantitative analysis. Principal component regression for pomace water content reached an error of 6.0% (±2.3), suitable for process control. The relationship between 'ratio of standard deviation of calibration data to standard error of prediction data' and 'range of confident prediction error percentage' was investigated, it results of hyperbolic type, the constant of the hyperbolic equation depends on the product under analysis for the olive pomace this constant is equal to 45.60 (±1.78). CONCLUSION Near-infrared analysis confirmed the possibility of determining the oil and water content in the olive pomace, which is important in the olive oil extraction process control. A new algorithm was used, together with standard statistical algorithms, to identify and remove the less useful wavelengths from the model, improving the overall prediction performance. A new parameter (the 'range of confident prediction error percentage') has been proposed for estimating the model's prediction error in an objective way. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) effectively treats obstructive sleep apnea in select patients. Drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) is required for HGNS candidacy. Data suggest that mandibular advancement (MA) devices and HGNS share similar target populations. We aimed to test the association between MA's effect on the velum and lateral walls during DISE in relation to the improvement in the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) with HGNS. AICAR molecular weight STUDY DESIGN Prospective case series METHODS All patients completed preoperative polysomnography or home sleep study, DISE with MA prior to HGNS implantation, and full-night efficacy sleep tests. Adult patients with body mass index (BMI) ≤ 35 and AHI ≥ 15 were included. Two independent reviewers scored DISE videos. RESULTS Forty-six patients were included from October 2015 to January 2019. Mean BMI (standard deviation) was 28.5 (3.7) kg/m2 . Patients with a reduced airway response to MA had greater AHI improvement than patients with a robust response (21.7, 95% confidence interval [CI] 14.4 to 29.0 vs. 4.9, 95% CI -8.9 to 18.6; P = .03). Patients with complete baseline collapse at the velum and lateral walls (n = 11) had less response compared to those with partial collapse (n = 35) (AHI reduction of 4.4 [95% CI -8.6 to 17.4] vs. 22.3 [95% CI 15.1 to 29.6; P = .02]). CONCLUSIONS Patients having significant airway improvement in the upper pharynx with MA during DISE appear less likely to succeed with HGNS. This phenomenon might be secondary to the worsened baseline obstruction of the upper pharynx in such patients. Understanding the microscopic part of the kelp's lifecycle is of key importance, as gametophytes form a critical phase influencing, among others, the distributional limits of the species. Many environmental controls have been identified that affect kelp gametogenesis, whose interactive effects can be subtle and counterintuitive. Here we performed a fully factorial experiment on the (interactive) influences of light intensity, light quality, and the Initial Gametophyte Density (IGD) on Saccharina latissima reproduction and vegetative growth of delayed gametophytes. A total of 144 cultures were followed over a period of 21 d. The IGD was a key determinant for reproductive success, with increased IGDs (≥0.04 mg DW · mL-1 ) practically halting reproduction. Interestingly, the effects of IGDs were not affected by nutrient availability, suggesting a resource-independent effect of density on reproduction. The Photosynthetically Usable Radiation (PUR), overarching the quantitative contribution of both light intensity and light quality, correlated with both reproduction and vegetative growth. The PUR furthermore specifies that the contribution of light quality, as a lifecycle control, is a matter of absorbed photon flux instead of color signaling. We hypothesize that (i) the number of photons absorbed, independent of their specific wavelength, and (ii) IGD interactions, independent of nutrient availability, are major determinants of reproduction in S. latissima gametophytes. These insights help understand kelp gametophyte development and dispersal under natural conditions, while also aiding the control of in vitro gametophyte cultures. © 2020 The Authors. However, these impacts might depend on the type of behaviour, how sociality as a biological trait is defined (e.g. network degree versus mean edge strength), and the type of social relationship between the interacting individuals. (2) We used the highly social common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) to test how an immune challenge by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injections affects two different social behaviors and three alternate measures of sociality, and whether the LPS effect differs by kinship relationship. (3) Effects of sickness should be lower for social behaviours that bestow greater benefits to inclusive fitness, such as food sharing. As predicted, immune-challenged bats experienced a greater reduction in allogrooming received than food sharing received. (4) Sickness effects might also depend on how a social interaction is defined (e.g. the number of grooming partners versus the duration of grooming events).
