For 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the suspension of on-campus student activities at American universities, necessitating a switch to a virtual format for these URM-focused programs. Outcomes, however, from these programs conducted virtually, necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, have not been reported. The Penn Access Summer Scholars (PASS) program at the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) targets URM undergraduates, providing two consecutive summers of mentored research and enrichment experiences, with the goal of enabling participants' matriculation to PSOM. PASS has been an 8 week on-campus experience, but during summer 2020, virtual programming of 6uates can be successfully conducted virtually to achieve program objectives and may increase the availability to these initiatives.
Communication is a complex and essential element of clinical practice. It is widely accepted that communication skills can be taught and learned, but challenges remain for clinicians in achieving effective communication with patients. This study explored the patient-communication challenges faced by both medical students and experienced clinicians.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twenty medical students and nineteen experienced clinicians from a range of medical disciplines. Interviews were recorded and transcribed, and transcriptions subjected to thematic analysis and coding to quantify the challenges discussed.
There was remarkable consistency in the challenges described by both groups of participants, with eight predominant challenges identified time constraints and chaotic environments, rapport building, patient characteristics, reluctance, omissions, assumptions, decision-making, and keeping conversations focused.
Medical curricula often focus on communication challenges associated with complex or sensitive clinical situations, but many of the challenges identified occur in routine consultations. Both pre-service and post-graduate medical training should adopt strategies to help build students' and clinicians' skills in managing these challenges from the outset of training.

Few data are available regarding intraoperative plasma concentrations of vancomycin administered as prophylaxis in pediatric cardiac surgery. The aims of this study were to investigate during pediatric cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass(CPB) the attainment of the area-under-the-curve of the vancomycin serum concentrations versus time over surgery to minimum inhibitory concentration ratio(AUC
/MIC) of 400 (mg × h)/l and/or a target concentration of 15-20 mg/l.
In a prospective study, 40 patients divided into four subgroups (neonates, infants, children <10 years-old, ⩾10 years-old) undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) were enrolled. A slow vancomycin bolus of 20 mg/kg, up to a maximum dose of 1000 mg was administered before skin incision and a further dose of 10 mg/kg (up to 500 mg) at CPB start. Vancomycin samples were collected intraoperatively at four time points.
The median (interquartile range) age was 241.5 days (47-3898) and the median weight was 7.1 kg (3.1-37)n concentrations are affected by CPB hemodilution and by patients' age and weight.

Strengthening RHIS has become a global priority to track and address national health goals. In Ethiopia, the Ministry of Health and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation introduced the Operational Research and Coaching for Analysts (ORCA) capacity development project, co-designed with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, which delivered training, coaching and mentoring support. We present the development, experiences, and perceptions of ORCA as a mechanism to enhance data quality, analysis, interpretation and use. ORCA integrated capacity development activities into national data analysts' routine workload over a period of 2 years. Participating analysts were drawn from across the Ministry of Health directorates and two of its closely aligned agencies the Ethiopian Public Health Institute and the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Agency. We used mixed methoect into their future work. Health system managers saw potential in longer-term improvements in data analysis and application to policy, although no clear changes were observed yet.
