We investigated the efficacy of mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) in promoting psychological wellbeing in people with epilepsy (PWE) using an assessor-blinded randomized controlled design.
A total of 28 PWE were randomly assigned to either intervention (n = 14 cases) or control group (n = 14 controls). The intervention group received a six 2.5-hour weekly MBI, while the control group did not receive any intervention. They were assessed at three timepoints (T0 before intervention, T1 immediately after intervention, and T2 6 weeks after intervention). Repeated measures of analyses of variance (RM-ANOVAs) were used for inter-group comparisons to determine intervention effect from baseline -to T1 and -to T2 for all outcome measures. The individual changes were calculated using the reliable change index (RCI). Key outcomes included depression (BDI-II), anxiety (BAI), epilepsy-related quality of life (QOLIE-31), satisfaction with life (SWLS), and level of mindfulness (MAAS).
Participants who participated in the MBI showed significant reduction in BDI-II (p = 0.001), significant increases in MAAS (p = 0.027) and QOLIE-31 (p = 0.001) at T1 when compared with the control group. However, BAI and SWLS were not significant. The trend was similar at 6-week follow-up, all outcome measures of MBI remained significant (p < 0.05) except for BAI and SWLS. Beyond the 6-week intervention, RCI analysis showed a significant improvement in levels of mindfulness (45.45% vs. 21.43%, p = 0.009), depression (45.45% vs. 0.00%, p = 0.016), quality of life (45.45% vs. 14.29%, p = 0.017) with MBI, as compared to the no-intervention phase.
Mindfulness-based intervention is effective in reducing psychological distress and improving the quality of life in PWE.
Mindfulness-based intervention is effective in reducing psychological distress and improving the quality of life in PWE.Memes are a very effective, visual means of communication on social media sites. In this study, we examined some of the most popular memes posted on Instagram labeled with an epilepsy hashtag, in order to gain an insight into the thoughts, feelings and concerns of people with epilepsy. 'Awareness', 'warrior' and 'sucks' were the three most common words paired with epilepsy in the hashtag search. The most popular (liked or shared) #epilepsy memes could be classified into 9 broad categories Seeking advice, Raising awareness, Inspirational quotes, Celebrations of seizure free milestones, Living with Epilepsy, Sharing the diagnosis, Experience of seizures, Medications and Doctor/patient interactions. Popular memes in this latter category highlighted people's difficulties in taking in information with respect to both the breadth and complexity of the discussions in neurological consultations. Other memes in this category depicted the social and psychological challenges associated with some investigations, particularly video-telemetry studies. Analyses of some of the most popular memes posted on social media point to a number of ways in which we can improve the patient/clinician interaction. Practical strategies to address some of these issues are discussed. Memes posted on social media by people with epilepsy provide a valuable source of feedback for clinicians which enables us to improve the care we provide for this group.Epileptogenesis is a process that includes molecular and cellular events that foster the establishment of hyperexcitable neuronal networks in the brain. Pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced kindling model in rodents has added new information to the knowledge about the pathogenesis of epilepsy and potential targets of novel antiepileptic agents. Evidence from animal and human studies suggests that oxidative and inflammatory events may play important roles in the initiation and maintaining seizure activities. Vitamin B12 has beneficial effects on the nervous system and presents pleiotropic effects with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory aspects. In the present study, we aimed to test the hypothesis that vitamin B12 and their combination with lamotrigine prevents behavioral deficits, hippocampal damage, oxidation, and proinflammatory state during epileptogenesis. Male rats were subjected to PTZ-induced epileptogenesis and pretreated with vitamin B12 (50 µg/kg) or Lamotrigine (LTG) (25 mg/kg) or B12 (50 µg/kg) + LTG (25 mg/kg). Vitamin B12 and its combination with LTG suppressed epileptogenesis and improved the performance of rats in the passive avoidance test. In addition, Vitamin B12 and its combination with LTG decreased levels of total oxidative status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and increased total antioxidant status (TAS) levels in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex. Furthermore, it reduced hippocampal neuronal damage. Current findings support the beneficial actions of vitamin B12 due to its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties during the course of disease. The use of trams for the transport of waste from urban areas to waste incineration facilities - does it make sense, would it be technically feasible, economically sustainable and environmentally beneficial? These are the questions which we attempted to answer in this comprehensive study. The analysis is performed for a specific potential implementation of this system in Prague and adjacent municipalities. In this work, we compare the current state, where mixed municipal waste is transported to an incineration plant directly by garbage trucks, with variants if mixed municipal waste were taken to transfer stations and from there transported over a longer distance in a large volume by means of tram or truck. Our results show that use of trams results in an overall cost level of €16.41 per ton of waste transported, which represents a slight saving against the existing system at a cost of €17.19 per ton. From the purely economic perspective, however, this does not compete with transportation by truck at €12.28 per ton - above all due to high initial investment into new cargo trams. From the environmental viewpoint, deploying trams brings benefits largely on the local level, where emissions would be reduced by about 50% against the current state. In the global view, assessed through the Life Cycle Assessment method, it appears however only to transfer emissions to the point of energy production, and from this perspective the use of trams is beneficial only if linked with a notable shift from fossil fuel energy to nuclear or renewable sources. In this work, detailed life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA) of a novel lactic acid (LA) production process from sugarcane bagasse is performed, with the objective of identifying process improvement opportunities. Moreover, this is first such study in the Indian context. Experimental data generated at the Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI) for upstream processes is combined with ASPEN Plus simulation of the downstream steps for a commercial plant producing 104 tonnes per day of LA. Equipment sizing is performed and costing is done using standard approaches. OpenLCA is used to develop the LCA model and Ecoinvent database is used to quantify life cycle impacts for 1 kg of LA. Different scenarios for the LA plant are studied. Selnoflast in vitro Results showed that the pretreatment stage was crucial from both economic and environmental perspectives. The total life cycle climate change impact for production of 1 kg of lactic acid was 4.62 kg CO2 eq. The product cost of LA was USD 2.9/kg, and a payback time of 6 years was achieved at a selling price of USD 3.21/kg. Scenario analysis has revealed that lactic acid plant annexed to a sugar mill led to significant environmental and economic benefits. Sensitivity analysis has identified opportunities to reduce the life cycle climate change impact to 2.29 kg CO2 eq. and product cost to USD 1.42/kg through reduced alkali consumption, higher solid loading, and reduced enzyme loading.A huge increase of waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is observing everywhere in the world. Plastic component in this waste is more than 20% of the total and allows important environmental advantages if well treated and recycled. The resource recovery from WEEE plastics is characterised by technical difficulties and environmental concerns, mainly related to the waste composition (several engineering polymers, most of which containing heavy metals, additives and brominated flame retardants) and the common utilisation of sub-standard treatments for exported waste. An attributional Life Cycle Assessment quantifies the environmental performances of available management processes for WEEE plastics, those in compliance with the European Directives and the so-called substandard treatments. The results highlight the awful negative contributions of waste exportation and associated improper treatments, and the poor sustainability of the current management scheme. The ideal scenario of complete compliance with European Directives is the only one with an almost negligible effect on the environment, but it is far away from the reality. The analysed real scenarios have strongly negative effects, which become dramatic when exportation outside Europe is included in the waste management scheme. The largely adopted options of uncontrolled open burning and illegal open dumping produce huge impacts in terms of carcinogens (3.5·10+7 and 3.6·10+4 person⋅year, respectively) and non-carcinogens (1.7·10+8 and 2.0·10+6 person⋅year) potentials, which overwhelm all the other potential impacts. The study quantifies the necessity of strong reductions of WEEE plastics exportation and accurate monitoring of the quality of extra-Europe infrastructures that receive the waste.Orange, one of the most important fruit categories to be consumed across the world, when processed produces 50% of its weight as waste. Current waste management options for orange peel waste are inadequate to use the waste in wholesome and its disposal might lead to other environmental concerns. Here, we present microwave hydrothermal carbonization as an alternative to utilize the orange peel waste. Further, using citric acid to catalyze the microwave hydrothermal carbonization resulted in 30% higher maximal yield of hydrochar, and the hydrochar produced had better elemental, proximate and energy properties than hydrochar made during uncatalyzed microwave hydrothermal carbonization. Further, structural analysis revealed that citric acid promoted the formation of nanospheres during microwave hydrothermal carbonization. Taken together, microwave hydrothermal carbonization of orange peel waste using citric acid as a catalyst might not only help address the waste management concerns for orange peel waste, but also can produce end products of potential commercial value.
