Electrocoagulation (EC) is one of the emerging technologies in groundwater and wastewater treatment as it combines the benefits of coagulation, sedimentation, flotation, and electrochemical oxidation processes. Extensive research efforts implementing EC technology have been executed over the last decade to treat chemical oxygen demand (COD)-rich industrial wastewaters with the aim to protect freshwater streams (e.g., rivers, lakes) from pollution. A comprehensive review of the available recent literature utilizing EC to treat wastewater with high COD levels is presented. In addition, recommendations are provided for future studies to improve the EC technology and broaden its range of application. This review paper introduces some technologies which are often adopted for industrial wastewater treatment. Then, the EC process is compared with those techniques as a treatment for COD-rich wastewater. The EC process is considered as the most privileged technology by different research groups owing to its ability to deal with abundant volumes of wastewater. After, the application of EC as a single and combined treatment for COD-rich wastewaters is thoroughly reviewed. Finally, this review attempts to highlight the potentials and limitations of EC. Related to the EC process in batch operation mode, the best operational conditions are found at 10 V and 60 min of voltage and reaction time, respectively. These last values guarantee high COD removal efficiencies of > 90%. This review also concludes that considerably large operation costs of the EC process appears to be the serious drawback and renders it as an unfeasible approach for handling of COD rich wastewaters. In the end, this review has attempted to highlights the potential and limitation of EC and suggests that vast notably research in the field of continuous flow EC system is essential to introduce this technology as a convincing wastewater technology.Concentrations of 22 essential and non-essential trace elements (Be, Al, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Mo, Ag, Cd, Sb, Ba, Tl, Pb, Th, U, and Hg) were measured in the organs of a mother-fetus pair (at the last trimester of pregnancy) of spotted seals from the Sea of Japan. The concentrations of eleven elements are reported for the first time. Eight organs of the pair were examined lungs, heart, liver, kidneys, intestines, spleen, muscles, and bones. All trace elements detected in the organs of the mother were found also in the organs of the fetus at various concentrations. Placenta is not an effective barrier to prevent non-essential elements from getting into the fetus, but can control entry of some of them, e.g., aluminum, cadmium, and mercury. In most organs of the fetus, the concentrations of toxic trace elements (beryllium, antimony, thorium, and uranium) were noticeably higher than in the same organs of the mother, which indicates that during pregnancy female removes excess of non-essential trace elements by transferring them to the fetal body through the placental barrier.Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure and genetic susceptibility were conductive to genotoxic effects including gene damage, which can increase mutational probability. We aimed to explore the dose-effect associations of PAH exposure with damage of exons of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and breast cancer susceptibility gene 1 (BRCA1), as well as their associations whether modified by Flap endonuclease 1 (FEN1) genotype. Two hundred eighty-eight coke oven male workers were recruited, and we detected the concentration of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OH-pyr) as PAH exposure biomarker in urine and examined base modification in exons of EGFR and BRCA1 respectively, and genotyped FEN1 rs174538 polymorphism in plasma. We found that the damage indexes of exon 19 and 21 of EGFR (EGFR-19 and EGFR-21) were both significantly associated with increased urinary 1-OH-pyr (both Ptrend less then 0.001). The levels of urinary 1-OH-pyr were both significantly associated with increased EGFR-19 and EGFR-21 in both smokers and nonsmokers (both P less then 0.001). Additionally, we observed that the urinary 1-OH-pyr concentrations were linearly associated with both EGFR-19 and EGFR-21 only in rs174538 GA+AA genotype carriers (both P less then 0.001). Moreover, FEN1rs rs174538 showed modifying effects on the associations of urinary 1-OH-pyr with EGFR-19 and EGFR-21 (both Pinteraction less then 0.05). Our findings revealed the linear dose-effect association between exon damage of EGFR and PAH exposure and highlight differences in genetic contributions to exon damage and have the potential to identify at-risk subpopulations who are susceptible to adverse health effects induced by PAH exposure. The unequal cost and benefit led by environmental changes may potentially set China's rural areas a "Poverty Trap." Therefore, clarifying the relationship between environmental changes and rural income distribution is of great significance to realize the organic integration of environmental improvement and poverty governance. Based on the panel data of China's coastal areas, this paper explores the mutual influence between environmental changes and fishermen's income distribution, thus testing the hypothesis of the poverty-environment trap. The results show that environmental degradation has a significant negative impact on fishermen's income. To be specific, compared with the middle- and high-income groups, the impact of environmental degradation on people with less income is more noticeable; as for the low-income groups represented by fishermen, the marginal effects of their income reduction on environmental degradation are more prominent; continuous decrease of their income together with environmental deterioration will form a vicious circle, bringing the risk of falling into the poverty-environment trap. In the follow-up environmental governance, authorities need to impose targeted measures and adopt tax or subsidy policies that are inclusive and preferential, so as to address the income gaps between fishermen and further relative poverty.
African Animal Trypanosomiasis (AAT) or nagana in animals, is caused by the blood-borne parasitic protozoa called trypanosomes, and is potentially fatal. It is estimated that Africa loses $4‒5 billion annually due to the death of livestock to nagana in the tsetse belt.

Although The Gambia lies within this belt, there is scanty data regarding the epizootiology of nagana in The Gambia. TAE226 purchase Here, records of reported cases of nagana for the period 2010-2019 at the International Trypanotolerance Centre (ITC) in The Gambia were analyzed retrospectively.

For insights into the current prevalence of AAT, blood samples of 384 cattle, 42 goats, and 59 sheep from the Central River Region (CRR) and Lower River Region (LRR) were analyzed microscopically for parasite identification. Furthermore, trypanosomes were characterized by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using a panel of primers that identify trypanosomes to the level of the species and subspecies by targeting a portion of the internally transcribed spacer-one (ITSf nagana in The Gambia is documented and the prevalent trypanosomes identified to be T. vivax, different types of T. congolense, and T. brucei including the gambiense subspecie. Finally, nagana is less profound in sheep and goats compared to cattle, with seasonal and regional variations playing a significant role in the disease dynamics.

In patients with a history of uveitis, a 60-90-day period of quiescence prior to cataract surgery has been historically recommended. These recommendations were based mostly on expert opinion. The purpose of this study was to further examine and understand uveitis quiescence timing and outcomes of eyes that do have a recurrence of uveitis after cataract surgery.

Patients with a history of uveitis undergoing cataract surgery at the University of Colorado Sue-Anschutz Rodgers Eye Center from 2014 to 2018 were studied. Main outcome measures were best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 6months, intraocular pressure (IOP) at 6months, and recurrences of uveitis within 90days of surgery. Timing of cataract surgery in relation to preoperative uveitis quiescence was recorded.

A total of 149 eyes from 114 patients were included. Uveitis recurrence was seen in 31 (20.8%) of the 149 eyes with a history of uveitis undergoing phacoemulsification. The mean logMAR change or improvement in vision was 0.429 in eyes with a ery are, though it appears there may be elevated IOP in patients with recurrences, and thus patients with a history of uveitis should be counseled carefully about this potential risk.
The multiple sclerosis (MS) landscape has changed over the past two decades across the world and in the Middle East. The Middle East is an ethnically diverse region located between 12° and 42° of latitude and 35° and 54° of longitude and varying altitudes. The magnitude of the shifts observed in the epidemiology and management of MS differ in each region and from country to country.

The aim of this study was to provide a clinicodemographic overview of the cohorts of patients contributed to MSBase, a large international MS registry, in the Middle East and describe disease-modifying treatment (DMT) utilization in the different countries within the region. Understanding the differences between these cohorts is integral to interpretation of the studies conducted using registry data and provides insight into clinical practice in these cohorts.

The MSBase registry was searched for patients with MS or clinically isolated syndrome from the Middle Eastern countries with data captured between 2009 and 2018. In 2-of the general MS population. The spectrum of therapies used in the individual countries, however, is highly variable. Further studies that include rural and non-academic practices are needed to enhance our understanding of the MS cohorts in the Middle East.Probiotics play significant roles in enhancing systemic immunity, improving intestinal balance and feed value, enhancing enzymatic digestion, and inhibiting pathogenic microorganisms of freshwater fish. Probiotics from an identical organism's gastrointestinal system promote effective colonization and provide greater benefits than other sources. This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of probiotic bacteria isolated from the intestines of freshwater fishes for a dietary supplement of freshwater aquaculture. A total of 120 isolates were collected from freshwater fishes of Channa striata, Puntius filamentosus, Oreochromis mossambicus, Cirrhinus mrigala, and Rasbora daniconius. Seven of these isolates exhibited antagonistic activity against fish pathogens Aeromonas hydrophila, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis, the isolates were identified as Enterococcus sp., Lactococcus lactis, Weissella cibaria, and Limosilactobacillus fermentum.
