To estimate the impact of a multifaceted knowledge translation intervention on patient rehabilitation outcomes in an inpatient stroke setting.

Interprofessional stroke rehabilitation teams were trained in Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance as part of the larger knowledge translation study. This study describes a two group (historical control vs. post knowledge translation intervention) nonrandomized study. Patient participants with stroke and cognitive impairment were recruited from five rehabilitation hospitals and completed an assessment battery upon admission to and discharge from rehabilitation and at three follow-up times. Data were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA.

Seventeen historical controls and eight postintervention participants were recruited. The effect for time was significant (P ≤ 0.05) for the majority of outcomes, but there were no significant group × time effects. Small effect sizes for the group × time interaction were noted on several indicators.

Compliance with hygiene and replacement of contact lens (CL) storage cases is key to avoid CL contamination and anterior ocular surface complications. However, compliance levels with these accessories remain low, even in patients with awareness of the risk associated with noncompliance.

This study aimed to determine level of compliance with common practices regarding CL storage case hygiene and replacement, type of information provided by practitioners, and risk perception.

An ad hoc self-reported survey was used to collect demographic and CL wear details, compliance with storage case care, type of received information, and risk perception (in a 1-to-5 scale). These derangements are especially recognized in critically ill patients, but can also occur in otherwise healthy patients including obese, pregnant and pediatric patients who have certain physiological alterations. Critically ill patients may have a physiologically difficult airway due to the presence of acute respiratory failure, hypoxemia, hypotension, severe metabolic acidosis, right ventricular failure, intracranial hypertension, and risk of aspiration of gastric contents during tracheal intubation.

Understanding the physiological alterations and the risks involved in patients with a physiologically difficult airway is necessary to optimize the physiology and adopt strategies to avoid complications during tracheal intubation.
