Gadolinium (Gd) is a rare earth associated with hospital and urban wastewaters due to its application as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging. In this work, the uptake of Gd from contaminated seawater by three living marine macroalgae, Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta), Fucus spiralis (Phaeophyta) and Gracilaria sp. (Rhodophyta) was studied along 72 h. Surface analysis (FTIR), water content, kinetic modelling, and Gd quantification in seawater and biomass were performed. All species were able to accumulate Gd from seawater with 10, 157, and 500 μg Gd L-1, although green and red macroalgae performed better, following the order green > red > brown. Removal efficiencies reached 85%, corresponding to a bioconcentration factor of 1700. In more complex solutions that intended to mimic real contaminated environments, namely mixtures with other rare earth elements (Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Eu, Tb, Dy), and with potentially toxic elements commonly found in wastewaters (Cr, Ni, Cu, Cd, Hg, Pb), at two salinities (10 and 30), the macroalgae kept its efficiency 84% and 88% of removal by green and red macroalgae, respectively. Overall, findings evidence that living macroalgae could be a countermeasure to the increasing anthropogenic enrichment of Gd observed in the aquatic environment.Adsorption plays an important role in seawater desalination, wastewater treatment, and, especially, boron removal from natural aqueous systems. Upadacitinib price In this paper, two sponge-like multifunctional polymers based on a cyclodextrin backbone were synthesized and used as adsorbents for the removal of boron, methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and phenol. The syntheses were carried out by esterification, atom transfer polymerization, and nucleophilic addition reaction. The polymers were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, XRD, XPS, and SEM. The performance of the two different adsorbents was investigated considering the effect of pH, initial concentration, and the anions and cations in an aqueous solution of borates. The experimental data were fitted with an adsorption isothermal model, adsorption kinetic model and other models. Both adsorbents exhibited high adsorption capacities (B 31.05 mg/g and 20.45 mg/g, MB 29.43 mg/g and 32.29 mg/g, MO 47.36 mg/g and 49.23 mg/g, phenol 5.04 mg/g and 4.35 mg/g, respectively) and a fast adsorption rate. The boron adsorption was found to be an exothermic process. The adsorbents show promising potential for the removal of boron and benzene-containing organic pollutants from aqueous solution.Magnetic CoFe2O4 is a promising heterogeneous catalyst with great separation and catalytic performance on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. However, for extremely recalcitrant organic pollutants (e.g. Benzotriazole (BTA)), CoFe2O4/PMS system exhibits much low catalytic performance and high metal ion leaching. As such, CoFe2O4 supported on three-dimensional graphene aerogels (CoFe2O4@3DG) was synthesized via facile hydrothermal method. It turns out that 3DG as supporter significantly enhances specific surface area, redox activity and electron transfer of composite. The degradation rate constant in the CoFe2O4@3DG/PMS system (0.0203 min-1) is 15 times higher than that in the CoFe2O4/PMS system (0.0013 min-1). It results from synergistic activation of PMS by CoFe2O4 and 3DG to generate multiple reactive oxygen species (•OH, SO4-•, O2-• and 1O2). Particularly, high graphitization structure and low oxygen groups content of 3DG facilitate PMS adsorption on its surface and electron transfer from BTA to PMS. Ultimately, BTA is degraded into CO2, NH3 and intermediates through benzene and triazole ring-opening reactions. Moreover, CoFe2O4@3DG/PMS system displays good stability and recyclability. Therefore, this study provides a new way to improve CoFe2O4 activity for extremely recalcitrant organic pollutants degradation and new insights into synergistic activation of PMS by CoFe2O4 and 3DG, which further advances cobalt-based catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis.Unprecedented shifts in temperature and precipitation patterns in recent decades place multiple abiotic stressors on the fish. In teleosts, metabolic, osmoregulatory, and molecular potential as tolerance responses to extreme ambient heatwave events at different salinities are poorly understood. The study was performed to evaluate the physio-biochemical stress responses and acclimation potential of European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax maintained at four different salinities followed by an extreme ambient heatwave exposure. Fish were kept at 32, 12, 6, and 2 psu for 35 days followed by a simulated extreme ambient heatwave (33 °C) exposure for 10 days. Fish growth performances, physio-biochemical and molecular responses were recorded. Fish acclimated at 32 and 2 psu exhibited significantly (p less then 0.05) decreased growth performance. Serum [Na+] and [Cl-] ions were significantly lowered (p less then 0.05) in 32 psu fish on day 10 of heatwave exposure. While serum glucose, triglycerides, and protein tens for future aquaculture management in a warming environment.Determination of dispersal strategies of alien species and its relationship with social and climatic factors are essential to understand the mechanisms of species invasion and adaption. Based on morphological trait, dispersal mode, and dispersal agent of diaspore of 562 alien species across China, we determined (i) the proportions of five dispersal strategies (i.e., autochory, anemochory, hydrochory, zoochory, and anthropochory), (ii) the relationships between the dispersal strategies and socio-climatic factors in 34 administrative regions across China, and (iii) the correlations between different dispersal strategies. Anthropochory, zoochory, and anemochory account for nearly 90.0% of all the dispersal strategies of alien species. link2 Mean frost days (MFD), mean annual humidity (MAH), and gross domestic product (GDP) were the main climatic and social factors that were correlated to different dispersal strategies. link3 Zoochory was positively related to MFD, but negatively related to the autochory and anthropochory. MAH negatively influenced the anemochory, while GDP positively influenced the hydrochory. We classified the six dispersal strategies into two groups based on the correlations among dispersal strategies, group I included autochory and anthropochory, and group II included anemochory, hydrochory, and zoochory. Within a group, dispersal strategies were positively correlated, while between groups, dispersal strategies were negatively correlated. Positive correlation between different strategies might be co-owned while negative correlation between different strategies might not be co-owned by one alien species. Understanding the characteristics of the dispersal strategies of alien species is important for policy makers when controlling the dispersal of malignant invasive alien species, predicting the distribution, and decreasing or cutting off the dispersal pathways of invasive alien species.Eight disinfection methods were applied to control biofilm contamination in domestic hot water system. The inactivation efficiency, responses of high- (≥1%), mid- (0.1% ~ 1%) and low-abundant taxa (≤0.1%) to disinfection, and interactions within and across three sub-communities were investigated. Ultraviolet was the most effective disinfection method for total bacteria and Escherichia coli, and chlorine dioxide had the highest inactivation efficiency on heterotrophic bacteria, while silver ions exhibited poor performance on all of them. At the phylum level, the responses of microorganisms to eight disinfection methods were different, but Proteobacteria and Firmicutes dominated in most samples. Eight disinfection methods had a greater impact on the proportion of high- and mid-abundant taxa than that of low-abundant taxa, and led to dissimilar transformations of genera among high-, mid- and low-abundant taxa in each sample. High-, mid- and low-abundant taxa of different samples showed similar structures and were roughly clustered into three Groups. Moreover, high-abundant taxa had more complex internal interactions than mid- and low-abundant taxa, and mainly presented co-occurrence patterns. The associations between high- and low-abundant taxa were close, and some low-abundant genera were identified as hub bacteria, such as Paracoccus, Thioalkalispira and Flavitalea. Furthermore, a total of 23 potential pathogens were detected in this study, and they mainly showed positive interactions, with Mycobacteria and Streptococcus as keystone genera. These results highlight the dissimilar responses of high-, mid- and low-abundant taxa to disinfection, and the critical role of some low-abundant genera in the microbial network, as well as the co-occurrence patterns among potential pathogens.
Melatonin is a free radical scavenger and an anti-inflammatory biomolecule. Air pollution exposure has been associated with increased inflammatory responses. We hypothesize that endogenous melatonin plays a role in inflammatory responses to air pollution exposure.
We tested this hypothesis in a cohort of 53 healthy adults (22-52years old, 16 women), none of whom were on melatonin supplementation. Early morning urine and fasting blood were collected from each participant longitudinally up to three times. We analyzed urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (aMT6s), as a surrogate of circulating melatonin, and pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the plasma samples. Indoor and outdoor air pollutants were measured and combined with participants' time-activity patterns to calculate personal exposure to O
, PM
, NO
, and SO
averaged over 12-hour, 24-hour, 1-week, and 2-week periods prior to biospecimen collection, respectively. Linear mixed-effects models were used to examine the relationships among urinary aMT6s,depletion of endogenous melatonin by O3.Previous studies have reported that dioxin exposure alters sexual dimorphism of play behavior in pre-pubertal children. We aimed to investigate the effects of perinatal dioxin exposure, indicated by dioxins in breast milk, on sexual dimorphism of gaze behavior after adjusting for salivary testosterone (T). Participants were pre-pubertal children in a hot spot for dioxin contamination originating from herbicide spraying in Vietnam. We used eye tracking to assess gaze behavior in 172 children (100 boys and 72 girls) aged 8-9 years. Two sets of 15 pairs of pictures, one oriented towards boys and one oriented towards girls, containing 5 pairs of toy photos (non-biological stimuli) and 10 pairs of human line drawings (biological stimuli) were shown to all children. The total fixation duration for each picture was extracted using Tobii studio software and a feminine index of gaze behavior was defined as the ratio of the summed fixation duration for the girl- vs boy-oriented versions of each stimuli. When viewing non-biological stimuli, feminine index scores significantly increased with TCDD (β = 0.294) in girls only. For biological stimuli, however, feminine index scores significantly increased with TEQ-PCDD/Fs (β = 0.269) in boys and with TCDD in girls (β = 0.286). These associations were significant even after adjusting for salivary T levels, which were inversely associated with some dioxin congeners in girls. In addition, increased feminine index scores for biological stimuli were associated with lower cognitive scores for hand-movement and word-order tests in boys and for face-recognition tests in girls examined at 5 years of age. In conclusion, these results suggest that perinatal dioxin exposure may increase visual interest in girl-oriented objects through impairment of cognitive abilities in pre-pubertal Vietnamese children. PCDD congeners were associated with gaze behavior independently of T levels in boys, while this was only the case for TCDD levels in girls.
