The concentration of NEP detected in accidental intoxication and polydrug cases overlapped with those attributed to other causes, including homicides and police involved deaths.Deaths with a toxicology finding of the party drug, 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), over the 20-year period from 2000-2019 in San Francisco are presented to identify shifting demographic trends. Of the 148 cases, 129 (87.2%) were male with mean and median ages of 30 and 28, respectively. The most common manner of death (MOD) in males was homicide (65 of 129) and accident (49 of 129). The most common MOD in females was accident (15 of 19). Regarding racial demographics, Black homicide deaths accounted for 59 of 67 (88.1%) of total homicides. The most prevalent cause of death for homicides was gunshot wounds (63 of 67, 94.0%). Homicide prevalence was high in the first decade of the study (53 of 88, 60.2%), sharply dropping off after 2011. White accidental deaths made up most of the accidental deaths (45 of 64, 70.3%). Since 2015, accidental deaths with MDMA began to rise (40 of 60, 66.7%), most with other coingestants. MDMA concentrations (median, mean ± SD) between homicide (290, 450 ± 490 ng/mL) and accidental (250, 680 ± 1120 ng/mL) deaths were similar. MDMA concentrations were elevated in central blood compared to peripheral blood from unmatched cases. MDMA was detected in a variety of decedents during the two decades, with primarily young Black male gunshot wound homicide victims in the first decade and primarily young White male accidental polydrug victims in the second decade. We found that aggregating school-level data to levels commonly used for public reporting can lead to large biases in identifying the number and location of at-risk students, and that different clustering metrics yielded variable interpretations of the non-vaccination landscape in Michigan. This paper shows the importance of choosing clustering metrics with their mechanistic interpretations in mind be it large- or fine-scale heterogeneity, or between-and-within group contributions to spatial variation.Little is known about the risk of hospitalization for cardiovascular disease after influenza infection in younger adults. This Hong Kong territory-wide study using clinical registry data between 1997 and 2017 examined the association between influenza-associated hospitalizations and the risk of subsequent hospitalization for heart failure (HHF) in 3 age groups 18-44, 45-65, and >65 years. The exposure was defined as any infection with influenza virus as a primary principal diagnosis for hospitalization, whereas the non-exposed control comprised hospitalizations for elective orthopedic surgery. Logistic regression was used to determine the risk for HHF within 12 months of hospital discharge comparing the exposed versus non-exposed groups. Results showed that influenza-associated hospitalization in the preceding 12 months was associated with increased risks for subsequent HHF in all age groups (all P less then 0.001). Of note, the 18-44 age group was found to have the highest elevated risk for HHF (adjusted odds ratio = 14.90, 95% confidence interval 4.48, 49.58). In view of the relatively small number of subsequent HHF episodes in this age group, future studies are needed to confirm the elevated risk in this group and explore the role of age in the relationship between influenza-associated hospitalization and subsequent HHF.
Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) is an emerging pathogen among men who have sex with men (MSM) with raising rates of antibiotic resistance. In this study, we assessed the prevalence and incidence of MG infection in MSM enrolled in the open-label phase of the ANRS IPERGAY trial with on demand TDF/FTC for HIV prevention and the impact of doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

210 subjects were tested at baseline and at 6 months by real-time PCR assays for MG detection in urine samples, oro-pharyngeal and anal swabs. Resistance to azithromycin (AZM), to fluoroquinolones (FQ) and to doxycycline were investigated in the French National Reference Centre of bacterial STI.

The all-site prevalence of MG at baseline was 10.5% [6.3% in urine samples, 4.3% in anal swabs and 0.5% in throat swabs] and remained unchanged at 6 months whether or not PEP was used 9.9% overall, 10.2% with PEP and 9.6% without. The overall rate of MG resistance (prevalent and incident cases) to AZM and FQ was 67.6% and 9.1%, respectively, with no difference between arms.
